!dataisbeautiful@mander.xyz

Following this thread on !fedigrow@lemm.ee, we decided to create a new "dataisbeautiful" community on mander.xyz (thank you again guys!)

Took us a bit of time as they were having federation issues until recently, but now everything works fine!

We have quite a lot of activity over there, but it's always good to promote it as some new joiners may have missed it.

Also shout-out to

!marinemammalrescue@lemmy.ca

For updates on the patients and activities of MMR, as well as Marine Mammal related content in general. It's the season for a lot of rescues right now, so hopefully there is a good bit of content.

I'm planning to eventually see if the organization wants to take over the community officially

The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society (VAMMR) is a global leader in marine mammal rescue, research, and rehabilitation. [They] respond to over 300 marine mammal emergencies each year and operate Canada’s only dedicated marine mammal hospital facility.

Searching Lemmyverse is good for finding communities. !trendingcommunities@feddit.nl is also a nice tool for finding new places.

I posted this on the other site but I thought I'd copy over here too, lots of good communities around to subscribe to if you want a more casual/fun frontpage that isn't just tech news, elon musk, or politics.

note: all of these communities have posts. If they appear empty, it simply means nobody on the instance you use has visited them before (or you might have blocked them and forgot, I've done it before, lol)! I will try to keep this thread updated over time.

Note: if you wish to auto-subscribe to all of the communities below, I have a post in the comments that describes how to do so.

My rough criterion was:

  • Of interest to me or a wide audience
  • Has a decent amount of activity
  • Casual / fun / interesting / cool / funny / chatty communities.
  • 0 negativity/negative vibes, news, politics, overload of tech or niche tech news/info, etc.

Directory

  • Conversation Communities - for chatty places
    • "ask" based
    • Casual chat / Misc
  • Hobbies, Creative, Passions
    • Misc
    • Artwork
    • Cooking, food, drinks
    • Gardening / Plants
    • Keyboard enthusiasts
    • Knitting, stitching, crocheting, etc
    • Reading and writing
  • Nice/Interesting/Funny pictures
    • Animals
    • Comics
    • Flags
    • Maps
    • Memes
    • Misc
    • Photography
    • Wallpapers
  • Games
    • Board games / Table top games
    • Chess
    • Crosswords / Daily games
    • Video games
  • Knowledge (e.g history, science, etc)
  • Space
  • TV (television, movies, film)
  • Music

Conversation communities

These are places that are 'chatty', good if you want a lot of comments.

"ask" based
Casual chat / Misc

Hobbies, Creative, Passions

Misc
Artwork

(see also the list under the Wallpapers header)

Cooking, food, drinks

Generally mostly nice pics of food:

Gardening / Plants
Keyboard enthusiasts
Knitting, Stitching, Crocheting, etc
Reading and Writing
Sport

Honestly there are so many sport communities around - if you search Lemmyverse for popular sports, you will almost certainly find more.

Nice/Interesting/Funny pictures

Animals

Literally just pictures of cute animals.

Comics
Flags
Maps
Memes

Meme communities in general can overload your feed, so keep that in mind.

Misc
Photography
Wallpapers

Games

Board Games / Table top games

The ttrpg.network instance has a lot of communities based around table top gaming & RPGs.

Chess
Crosswords / Daily games
Video Games

Knowledge (e.g history, science)

Space

TV (television), movies, film

Music

Lots of music communities on Lemmy. Search Lemmyverse for genres of interest for more, this definitely isn't exhaustive.

Note that music communities generally have low comment counts, from my experience.

There's also:

Previous

These communities have been removed from the list for not maintaining activity.

As usual with the fediverse, choice is key.

There were quite a few complaints on !fediverse@lemmy.world about !linux@lemmy.ml not having any real alternative (https://reddthat.com/post/20166234), so let's see if we can revive the programming.dev one.

And if it fails, at least we tried.

!imaginary@reddthat.com

Created this community as a fan of the Imaginary Network on Reddit.

I had a chat with other people maintaining other Imaginary communities on Lemmy (directory is !imaginarydirectory@lemm.ee ), they wanted to try a different approach, I just wanted a generic fantasy / futuristic community to change from !traditional_art@lemmy.world and !artporn@lemm.ee

Hi all, when I first joined Lemmy (and the fediverse broadly) I was interested in having discussions around animated media. Unfortunately it seems all the existing communities were either dead, inactive, had a slightly different (usually narrower) scope, or some combination of the 3.

As such I've taken over an inactive Animation community and hope to help build something fun for all animation fans! Please take a look and subscribe if interested:

Open Creative (lemmy.ca)

Just popping in to post about a community to discuss FOSS creative software like GIMP, Inkscape, Scribus, Kdenlive, Blender, etc...

https://lemmy.ca/c/open_creative

I've used them all at one time or another. Since moving to FOSS as much as possible ten years ago, I've learned a LOT about most of the programs, and consider myself a near expert in some (Kdenlive, GIMP) and fairly competent in others (Blender, Scribus).

I feel like having a place where anyone who uses FOSS creative software can both ask questions, share advice, and celebrate each others works, would be a nice addition to the Fediverse.

So feel free to join and post your work, your questions, your news or your tips and tricks.

I'm a one man band as far as modding and maintaining for now, so thanks in advance for your patience while I learn how it all works on the back end.
