This is one thing I never understood... how does he keep getting away with it? Repeatedly screwing people over and over and over and over again and somehow no one doing shit about it?

He doesn't just screw over workers, he does it for his business partners, too. Wealthy anf powerful people... people who can hire hitmen and also pay to make the evidence disappear. If they can kill Epstein why wouldn't they have gotten rid of him in the 80s and 90s when he didn't have as much power as he does now?

[–] Mrkawfee@feddit.uk 3 points 2 hours ago

He doesn't screw over the Epstein class, and that's all that really matters

All his fans and supporters believe that he only screws over their common enemies. In fact, they love that he does that. They falsely believe that he would never screw over them. He will never eat their faces. They think they're the in group with Trump.

The american legal system is catered to one principal:

if you owe your bank $10 that's your problem, if you owe your bank $10 billion dollars, that is your banks' problem.

This is why salespeople and scammers flourish in america: get enough loans and debt and you can uno reverse any monetary problem here but often rich people and bullshit artists are the only ones who have enough collateral to get that kind of debt.

The courts are designed to take a lifetime to figure that kind of stuff out - it keeps going as long as you have money. This is why republicans are obsessed with the estate tax: if you pass it on to your kids before the scam gets sorted out, all the ill gotten gains are laundered. Your kids are set for life and all the people you conned foot the bill.

Same way I stuck with my wife for 20 years despite her being a rotten person - I kept hoping it would get better, and she'd string me along with promises... Then she cheated on me with our son's best friend's dad, that finally made it easy to leave, and once I left, hindsight made all the previous mistreatment so much more obvious...

Yo dawg pardon my language but fuck that bitch. Stay strong and sorry someone played with your heart like that. Your example speaks volumes for your son.

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Good god. Makes me thankful that I leave people behind easily. You're overdue for treating yourself to some unrestrained enjoyment of life.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 10 points 5 hours ago

My understanding is the not paying people is “legit” in that the remedy is the courts but his lawyers are good at making it too costly to pursue. If they believe they weren’t paid, they should sue: notice there are few judgements against him like that.

It’s just like all his shell companies. During the first reign of terror, there were articles that they found over 500 companies with payments going back and forth so the web was impossible to decipher and there were always Trump owned companies with huge losses/writeoffs. I don’t remember them actually finding anything illegal but it sure smells like it. He even bragged it was so complex that the irs didn’t have enough auditors to dig through that for tax fraud. It was almost a dare. What happened to that?

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

The Russian agents keeping tabs on their useful idiot must have protected him.

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

How exactly are you imagining that? Did they stand in the way every time someone tried to wipe Trump out?

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Considering how rare assassination attempts are now despite him being objectively the most hated person the world has ever seen (by sheer numbers - there weren't nearly as many people alive when Hitler lived), it's admittedly unlikely, but still plausible.

[–] Earthman_Jim@lemmy.zip 4 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

What if in our world of infinite universal timeline probabilities, this is the timeline where Trump always gets what he wants?

To think there's a potentiality where he always loses and we missed it by this much.

[–] Ranulph@thelemmy.club 8 points 6 hours ago

Its the old bait and switch. Did you know that Federal Deposit Insurance can be paid out in a period of decades? They can make you ''whole'' over a period of time that can stretch over years. Technically you will not lose any money but practically you can die before you get your money.

An authoritarian typically keeps the military and police well-fed, or alternatively allows them to rob the plebs as they see fit. Otherwise bad things may happen to the emperor.

Unfortunately, Trump is likely to kick the bucket before he sees any blowback of this.

[–] Avicenna@programming.dev 6 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

yea he did trash all those science fundings for a reason and part of it is to pay his own policing force aka ICE

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

Also because science is woke and/ or gay. I believe it says so in the executive order.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

And that's because Trump is a Russian shill and Russia promised to bring down America in this exact way, a half a century ago. Edit dmn I'm getting old that's closer to 3/4ths of a century

[–] Avicenna@programming.dev 2 points 5 hours ago

except the words are not allowed so they are also reducted from the executive order

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 18 points 13 hours ago (1 children)
[–] draco_aeneus@mander.xyz 46 points 13 hours ago (4 children)

ICE had a signup bonus (dunno how much, $4000, I think?), and nobody received it yet.

The guy who is 'famous for not paying' is Trump, who has a history of being in debt/not paying his debts off.

[–] abigscaryhobo@lemmy.world 20 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (2 children)

Specifically not paying contractors. He would regularly hire contractors for jobs at Trump buildings/companies where it was x% up front and x% on completion. Then when they came for the completion percent he would just not pay and make them take him to court. Sometimes he paid, but other times they just couldn't afford to litigate as long as he could so they'd get stiffed.

Edit: USA Today Article because citing your sources is important: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2016/06/09/donald-trump-unpaid-bills-republican-president-laswuits/85297274/

Or paying the buses to his rally in winter but not back, abandoning a ton of his followers to freeze the night or find other ways home.

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 hours ago

If you run out of money you run out of justice

[–] Malfeasant@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

It was way more than that- like 50-70k...

*Edit* never mind me, apparently that was a retention bonus, different thing

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 18 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Afaik the bonus promised is 50k, which is a bit more significant. Leads to people joking that they'd like to join, get the bonus and then just not do the job.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Signup bonus is different from retention/quota bonus. Signup bonus is all him

But the big one, the retention bonus can probably be pushed off long enough to blame democrats and/or not paid because they’re not making their quotas

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 25 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

You have to stay with the agency several years. The plan is to fire them before paying.

[–] diablomnky666@lemmy.wtf 8 points 7 hours ago

Exactly it's a retention bonus that gets paid out in stages, but DHS can also recoup all of it if the agent/goon leaves before the period expires. I wouldn't be surprised if they dangle a "reenlistment" bonus near the end of the term which locks them in longer.

[–] TwodogsFighting 4 points 11 hours ago

Gosh, who would've thought it.

[–] doug@lemmy.today 134 points 23 hours ago (4 children)

sadly I would not put it past a lot of those psychopaths to do it for free.

[–] MTZ@lemmy.world 85 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

No doubt that some of them are doing it for the love of the game. 🫤

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

Those are probably the ones ending up in viral clips either threatening to kill someone or actually doing it (or in one case failing because they didn't know their safety was on).

[–] Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I was recently thinking, this recruitment drive must be heaven for the common proud boys brownshirt.

Who of them wouldn't sign up, they get to harm immigrants, they get cover from the very top if they catch public attention, they get gear, and they might even get paid for it.

[–] FilthyHands@sh.itjust.works 3 points 8 hours ago

This is what he meant by "stand back and stand by"

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 30 points 19 hours ago

Maybe some of them just show up in masks with their mallninjashit, and they’re not on the payroll and no one asks if they did the two week training.
