At what point will the US stock market being literal meme stock all the way down actually start having a material effect?

[–] nasezero@hexbear.net 32 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It does feel like financial capitalism will keep trucking along up and until the bottom (material reality) falls out, and if that doesn't start to happen with the oil supply simply becoming too low to sustain basic functioning society (and prevent food riots) then idk shrug-outta-hecks

The stock market can stay irrational for a very long time, maybe indefinitely, as long as the USD retains its global status. If you’re China and you have a comical glut of USD, literally what else do you do with it other than buy up stocks and bonds. There aren’t enough real assets to buy up otherwise, and their monetary wealth would devalue.

Beat Elon like a piñata to get it

[–] red_giant@hexbear.net 39 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It’s because Tesla and SpaceX made the world 100x better. If not more.

Can you even remember life before the Cyber Truck? Has humanity ever got a banana almost into orbit? How could your yacht or combat drone connect to the internet before Starlink?

Capitalism rewards creativity, innovation. The system works.

LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO time to look forward to who will be the world's first quadrillionaire! to-the-moon

A trillion fucking dollars and he can't buy one person that actually likes him and isn't trying to get that bag. Disgusting maggot, child killer. fedposting he gets what he deserves

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago

i thought it was an emerald mine?

[–] AstroStelar@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What does it mean exactly for SpaceX to be valued at over 2 trillion dollars, where does that money come from?

[–] techpeakedin1991@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

See, your problem is you're trying to use critical thinking, but the stock market is the dumbest thing in existence. The money doesn't actually exist, that's just what they could hypothetically get if he sold all those stocks (and actually found people who are willing to but them at that price (and the price would go down if so many stocks were sold at the same time (which would probably cause a crash of the stocks valuation because it's valuation is only based on vibes that it's gonna keep going up and eventually make money somehow (and also a retirement fund scam now I guess))))

[–] ziggurter@hexbear.net 4 points 2 days ago

Don't worry: if he wants the money, he'll just use the stock as collateral to "borrow" it, rather than "selling".

Capitalists figured out the market devaluation thing a while ago.

[–] daniyeg@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

i think the funniest consequence of SpaceX IPO is that there are now so many new millionaires minted that the housing market in silicon valley and texas is going to explode.

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 10 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

this is just one of three massive IPOs minting thousands of new millionaires in the Bay Area. Anthropic and OpenAI are coming too.

My partner and I were trying to find a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house around there, not that we can afford one, and it can't be done for less than $1.4 million and those houses are pretty crap. Like one was 900 sqft and cost $1.9 million.

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In the heartland, you can get that same house for 1/15 of that sticker price.

There's a baseline, and then there's the waves of markup that the upper tier of the economy is coasting on.

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago

Don't I know it. I keep telling my partner that but she's too afraid to leave because layoffs are the norm now and the next job almost assuredly won't be a remote job.

[–] TheWolfOfSouthEnd@hexbear.net 10 points 3 days ago

All the good that that money could go towards achieving, rather than sitting in some dick heads bank account.
