There's some fun replies actually, I don't regret this yet.

machine translation for those without a click to give.

Mr. Zhou Junhong, your speech is really an "anti-communist joke of the year" ah! The ancestors are big landowners, and the CCP flies on your farm as soon as you come to your farm, so you now hate itching? Dare to your anti-communist "sublime ideal", that is, the pain that you have not been able to sit on the mountain empty grandmother, inherit those acres of land to continue to exploit farmers? Without the CCP, you don’t have to “poverty-seeing lawyers”?
Haha, laugh dead - dare to ask you North University, the Master of Law diploma, who gave it? Isn’t that the “Chinese” education system you’re calling for? Now people in the United States to test the California lawyer, bone and meat separation must rely on overseas anti-communist circles to eat, turn around the head is ungrateful, scolding "usurpation" came?
What is more, your lawyer has been half-way deprived by the CCP, and he shouts "all previous achievements have been abandoned"? Please, your previous work was to step on the shoulders of the CCP! Now it is better to turn into the "founder of the Human Rights Lawyers League", the three-child mother Christian is full, crying and separating - but what about the poor peasants who have been exploited by your "big landowners"? Their bones and bones are separated, their wives and ions are scattered, why don't you mention it? Co-author only your Zhou family's "farm dream" was broken, it was called human tragedy, others were shot and starved to death, is "deserving"?
To sum up: Ms. Zhou, you speak against the Communist, the logic is as bad as the confiscated land of your ancestors - the surface is glamorous, and the bones are full of the sour and odor of the landlord's old wealth. Who is not anti-communist, who is a pig? Oh, then you "inherited fantasy pig", I am afraid that even the pig pen hates you too much. Continue to be in the United States when your net red bar, do not come back to harm, so as not to be "deprived" again, crying is too late!

(Sorry for the butchery. I do not use sophisticated software.)

I'm idly curious what the fuck this person is talking about with their legal career being taken away. Don't suppose you know?

Not sure its worth trying to figure it out, it would take a true brainworm host to think "in a fair world I would have more than all of you" is a sympathetic statement and I don't know I'm capable of understanding the leaps of logic presumably underpinning their resentment.

I thought my politics were already pretty good at the time, but I confess that until the crimes of Ben Roberts-Smith were exposed (apparently) had I never interrogated my beliefs and attitudes about the Australian SAS. I knew a boomer who was SAS and he was okay (child me thought) and so my personal experience aligned with the propaganda and I never had reason to question it.

I don't gotta give him credit, sooner or later one of these sadistic murderers was going to get outed or would out themselves online for clout. But I'm not too proud to admit that its this case that caused those particular scales to fall from my eyes. Way too recent to not be a bit embarrassing.

The SAS is like a sacred cow in Australia. They're at once stone cold killers, athletes, polyglots, warrior poets, and morally unassailable owing to their perfectly measured surgical precision and the judiciousness with which they are deployed.

LOL SIKE ITS JUST MORE BABY KILLING

The most likely and least funny explanation. shucks.

The language isn't a problem. Loads of people in China, especially in and around universities, are fluent in English. Plus OP would get to learn Mandarin in arguably the best environment for it.

(arguably because sometimes you just wanna practice your mandarin but everyone else wants to use their english. many such cases. my experience and so many people I've talked to about this lol)

I've been to China multiple times and I find the Arctic Circle very appealing as a life experience / novelty / adventure but I would still choose two years in China over one in the arctic.

It would be (presumably) a good career move, an excellent cultural experience, more time away, more exposure to mandarin = quicker and easier to learn, you'd get to see what a real modern country is like and possibly form connections or even friendships with people who might be in a position to work on projects with real positive impact.

Over the span of two years you'd have a few days here and there that you'd need to occupy and China has lots of distinct unique places and cultures, and of course the variety of climates / biomes.

Also what you said about China taking climate change seriously is representative of I think the biggest appeal for me, which would be the mental relief I'd get living somewhere that takes things seriously, is serious about solving problems and that has a proper healthy respect for science and reason. At a policy level anyway-

A friend of mine taught there for a bit over a decade and is a lot less prone to romanticizing everything. In day to day life China isn't an especially rational and efficient place, not tryna sound naive and utopian. But on the whole they are pushing consistently in the right direction on policy and implementation, and for me that would be very subconsciously comforting thing.

Like how libs get to feel when brunch isn't cancelled. I want that. I want communist brunch and I want it for you too.

But the Arctic Circle option would be fucking cool too, what an awesome decision to have to make. beanis

I'm gonna irresponsibly wager it was a Japanese ship doing intentional provocation modeled after Australian and American naval games of chicken.

Gonna see if I can find out more tho. Doubt it was Australia but I'd like to know if it was, we've done it before.

Edit: There's PLA drone footage online from the last 24 hours apparently tracking a Japanese Destroyer moving through the taiwan strait. Haven't confirmed its related but I'll take my winnings whenever.

[–] JustSo@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hopefully China is realising based on *gestures at everything else* that they can in fact stand on business with the south china sea and the rest of the world will not implicitly support American primacy in these matters.

Not to say its necessarily an American boat they drove away, the west is always pulling these naval fake-outs for the sake of testing China's response and to generally undermine their legitimacy. It's so provocative.

I'm sure some policy wonk would know better to me its childish and petulant.

Are you sure? I can still see hookworms hanging out of your fingers from last time. How do you live like that lol.

Been through too much? Your brain might be running on “emotional numbness mode” without telling you. Here, we break down trauma response, the signs of trauma, and what trauma does to your brain—because feeling nothing is somehow still… a feeling. If you’ve ever wondered why you feel nothing anymore, we’ll also explore what healing from trauma can actually look like.

I dunno if I'm just especially sensitive right now but it made me a bit cri its a relief to have someone else say some of this stuff and validate some of the coping mechanisms.

I would probably have shown this to some people IRL if it wasn't a bit aggrandizing. Not inappropriately so, but enough that I wouldn't expect someone to look past it if they didn't understand what any of this is like.

I would like to pay my respects to the indigenous people of the occupied territories known as Canada whose brave taxpayers funded this badpost video which I have liberated.

(I'm not posting in the thread because the OP asked for disengagement and it was supposed to be a reply but isn't an appropriate post for that context and I'm really fucking frustrated at how stubborn and defensive and inflexible people can be, just for the sake of avoiding a moment of sincere reflection and an apology. Comrades please how are we going to get anywhere like this.)

Foolish has similarly medieval medical roots to other ablest slurs that are more widely recognised.

illustrative examples:

  • early 13c., "silly, stupid, or ignorant person," from Old French fol "madman, insane person; idiot; rogue; jester,"

  • also an adjective meaning "mad, insane" (12c., Modern French fou),

  • c. 1200, "sinful, wicked; lecherous" (a fool woman (c. 1300) was "a prostitute") (even the phrase "fooling around" is problematic?)

  • Also used in Middle English for "sinner, rascal, impious person" (late 13c.).

  • the sexually explicit foolin came back into vogue in the 70s

https://www.etymonline.com/word/fool - I left out all the examples that don't agree with this because non-problematic use does not rehabilitate a word once it has been turned into a tool of oppression (apparently.)

I look this up cuz I too at one point thought foolish was fine, but I had a tiny glimmer of doubt and I checked and whoops more badness.

The fact that nobody I'm aware of has been hurt by the word fool yet doesn't change the potential for harm it carries. So why would I risk it?

What would it say about my attitude towards my comrades if I brought a sharp sword to the meeting and swung it around for my own edification? despite slashing a few of you and oops really badly hurting someone I don't know that well yet. (Hey back off I like the sword okay? It's messed up to ask me to stop being a dickhead with it.)

At one point I might have wanted, instead of adjusting my behaviour and making a concessions , to make a big performance out of the fact that the meaning of words is entirely derived from their context.

Materially, socially and the context of the words that come before and after them in the sentence and paragraphs that they arrive in. That's USUALLY the most important part that lets you determine the meaning of somebody's words.

But I'd be an asshole if I made this about that.

I might have been pedantically correct, Words don't hurt people, people hurt people type shit.

But I'd be debateperverting, being even more of an arse on top of already hurting my comrades. If I'd be willing to do that, I might even dig in every time and cynically turn every opportunity for growth into a dishonest argument of deflection and talking past each other. So why would I do that?! That seems like really shit comrade behaviour.

Not only is it none of my business whether the core root causes of someone's vulnerabilities are internally consistent and logically valid, it isn't even relevant, because we aren't attempting to calculate a truth. We're trying to get along and create a pleasant safe space to hang out in.

So long as there are some coherent and consistent things I can do to accommodate vulnerable comrades then I don't see how why I wouldn't. What kind of fragile self centered baby would I be? I mean I'm just vibin and this other person has been shocked into a trauma response from my actions, they are hurt and I am not.. perhaps I have a responsibility in multiple ways to take ownership of resolving the situation to MY COMRADE'S satisfaction. The harmed party, who I did that to. (I shouldn't have done it! but now I have the window of opportunity to fix this as best I can and adjust.

I'm not being factitious about the way I try to act and respond to this. I do try to permanently shed these words from everyday use in my vocab.

Cuz I'm not trying to be a better comrade just so I can be a good hexbear.

If I'm learning how to be a better person then I would be irrational and mean spirited indeed if I went right back to not caring (or behaving as though I didn't care) who I hurt in the rest of my life.

Low key I thought you all kinda felt like this too. I thought this was an aspect of my praxis. Sometimes inconvenient and might not get the satisfaction of a revolution to reward me for trying my best.

But its part of the deal if you ask me. What a tiny sacrifice. You really wouldn't budge on this?

I don't get it comrade. It aint nothin to me man, I got so many other words and every time I fuck up its a chance to do a better job of every other part of this meeting of communist minds.

Are you already as woke as you're going to get?

The euphemism treadmill is a linguistic phenomenon where words used as euphemisms for unpleasant concepts eventually acquire negative connotations, leading to the need for new euphemisms. This cycle continues as new terms also become tainted over time, requiring further replacements.

[OOC]: watch this drive obama-drone

Examples of words that have undergone the euphemism treadmill include "c*******," which evolved to "h**********," then "d**abled," and more recently "differently abled."

Another example is "m***** r**********," which has shifted to "intellectually d**abled" as societal views on language and disability have changed.
