The Occupation of Alcatraz was a 19-month long protest which began on this day in 1969, when 89 Native Americans and their supporters occupied and reclaimed Alcatraz Island as indigenous land.

The protest was led by Richard Oakes and Grace Thorpe. The group chose the name Indians of All Tribes (IOAT) for themselves and lived on the island together until the protest was forcibly ended by the U.S. government.

IOAT claimed that, under the Treaty of Fort Laramie between the U.S. and the Lakota tribe, all retired, abandoned, or out-of-use federal land was returned to the Indians who once occupied it.

By late May of 1971, the government had cut off all electrical power and all telephone service to the island. Left without power, fresh water, and in the face of diminishing public support and sympathy, the number of occupiers began to dwindle. On June 11th, 1971, a large force of federal officers removed the remaining 15 people from the island.

I just saw a YouTube reel of a guy who made a 3000Ib concrete sarcophagus with a resin cast block protecting a bag of flaming hot cheetos, suspended inside via wires so it's floating, before hermetically sealing it and burying it for future civilizations to find, with a memorial plaque indicating "a buried artifact, not to be opened for 10,000 years"

Had to drag myself out of bed because my mom left the water running again in the washroom. So fucking sick of having to constantly check no one else in this house is doing or not doing something fucking stupid.

The constant anxiety of wondering if something is going to break or someone is going to unjustly yell at me or cat h on fire because they're all too low IQ to not fuck up at basic tasks constantly.

Punched a car that almost ran me over trying to do a right turn on a red. Probably not the most recovery mindset action I could have taken in that situation, but I'll be able to talk to the people at the NA meeting about it. Just waiting for the doors to that to open

Small time science/tech youtubers: Sorry I'm just doing a low effort one today guys, we're just going to be dismantling this piece of machinery, explaining every single part in it, why these parts were chosen and the historical context in which this machine was built. I'm only doing two videos this month sorry.

Big time science/tech youtubers: I had my intern write why I like the new iphone

Small AND big time media youtubers: Wow my job is so fucking hard, it took 7 months of hard work to review the fifth episode of a TV show that only ran in Canada in the 80s.

When I'm sparring in BJJ (martial art about submission wrestling) I have this idea that, as a brown belt (proximate to a black belt), I need to go a little harder against people so that they have something to aspire to. Like if the highest rank people are pushovers, why would you want to work hard? Why would you feel like the art has anything to offer you? But if the big dogs are flipping you into the ground and threatening a submission every other second then you're like "oh, I see the skills I could develop if I stick with it."

Well, this weekend a 0 stripe white belt came into the academy (as new as you can get). I go with them because I mean to be polite and welcoming. I usually just give them a dilemma and have them think their way through it. Like if I mount them but also their arms are up by their ears, I let them escape. This person tells me "don't go easy on me." It's so the opposite of what I usually hear. People are always like "don't break me. I have a job. I'm just going to sit down so we don't do stand up." I had to make sure I heard them correctly. After confirming it I have no qualms about it because, unlike traditional martial arts, I only really learned how to do it without any emphasis on any kind of moral code. So I think it sounds like fun.

Comrades, I go at this motherfucker at competition pace. I'm looking for throws and, if they had stepped back at a bad angle, I'd yank them and they'd have flipped over my hip or shoulder. I don't even need to bother with submissions because I simply jammed my knee into their stomach until they tapped. I'm doing aftercare after the "submissions," making sure they felt safe, respected, and they still wanted to do it. I keep squeezing them instead of getting chokes or joint locks. If ever I didn't have a clear attack and I needed to think for a split second, I yank on something so that only I get thinking time and they don't.

At the end they go "so, do you have any tips?" and I come out of a trance. It's as if I'd just come out of the avatar state and all my past incarnations had been looking at them like they were the firelord. I don't think I gave them much of a chance to do anything other than tap. So I'm just like "you should keep showing up to class." Then, upon reflection, I'm considering how that was the biggest thrashing I've given out in a long time. Like I just did violence to what is essentially a layman and there's nobody to talk to them or myself - the coach was lower rank than me so it's not like I'm looking at them for a thumbs up or thumbs down. We just go about the rest of the class after that. They appreciate it and thank me on their way out, so it seems like I lived up to expectations.

She also tried, unsuccessfully, to use the Nazi's Aryan laws preventing Jews from owning businesses to try to take control of her perfume company from her Jewish partners.

very convenient that her ideology lined up with her material benefit I wonder how that happens

Kind of amazing that 9 weeks ago the chuds thought Charlie Kirk would be a historic martyr and Trump would use his death as the excuse to end elections. Now literally no one remembers him, and Trump just had a long meeting with the socialist mayor of New York where he basically fell in love.

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago

literally no one remembers him

AI Charlie Kirk memes are still popping off, but yeah I think in a few years people will forget that he was a real person and not some invented AI entity.

I gotta get scheduled earlier on Sunday's. Im.thebkast one in and it shows, I had to do missed prep sruff that is usually done before we are even open like washing and cutting romaine. Everyone just decided to love not thinking today as well. We have a ricotta cream pizza sauce, ricotta, heavy cream and garlic whipped. Apparently it split after being whipped, which doesnt make sense...unless the cream was off. So I asked about that. He used an open container that was in the walk-in. First off, an open container of cream should never go back to the walk in, put it on the pasta line so it gets used. Second if you find one it should be treated with suspicion. Third, if its splitting that means the cream is curdled cause that's the only way that could chemically happen and fourthly, it takes 2 full cartons of cream to make a batch. So using an already opened one is gonna fuck up the recipe anyway. When he went and bought cream at the grocery store nearby he only got one carton so I could only make a half batch. This is the sous chef. Another guy when an 8 top only ordered spaghetti and then somehow ine of them didnt know it had cheese and wanted a new one, when I said 'no cheese' he heard 'goat cheese and proceeded to do that without any question at all despite it both being super weird and also something that wouldnt require a remake cause I could just send a cup of it out to the table. Guy building pizzas couldn't figure out that when I was asking him to watch the oven while I was plating all these pastas that I meant until I was free and not until the oven was clear cause as soon as he sent the next round he figured restocking the line was more important than watching the oven with food that can and did burn. There was a bunch of other basic setting up.for service stuff thst was just not done as well. And I was told the afternoon was slow.

vanquish is a game about president hillary clinton sending an antifa supersoldier to defeat putin’s bot army

Apparently you can use the inedible portions of artichokes as what's basically a filler ingredient to tarhana that adds antioxidants and fiber to it without really harming the consistency of the final product (allegedly)

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/366880673_Fermented_cereal_soup_with_artichoke_Cynara_scolymus_L_bracts_volatile_profile_functional_powder_and_sensory_properties

In other news my tarhana (without the yogurt so i guess my vegetable infused sourdough) has been fermenting for a week and i could dry it now but it's still bubbling a lot so maybe i should let it keep going?

I kinda want to put some in the bulgur wheat I'm gonna try making vegan cheese with but maybe that's too advanced a fermentation for someone who's never done either thing before

Well, I guess I'm stating a political hardcore punk band.

I'm still healing from this divorce shit and something kind of amazing came out of it. I haven't been in the scene for damn near 20 years and only was able to go to a few shows when I was married. Well, we are apparently developing a scene in my city again, so I've been trying to make it out to shows as much as I can. A few months ago I was talking to some friends about how I wish we had a proper punk scene here. Discovered a local band named Social Anxiety and was hanging out with them last night at this sort of multi-genre show that they were playing at. I've also been talking to a few friends about possibly starting a band.

I bought a bass guitar this last week after not playing for 20 years, I am friends with 2 guitarists, and I might have possibly also found a drummer. Gonna see where this goes but if this project does take off I'll be stepping down from PSL and probably putting the web dev stuff on hold to pour all my time into relearning bass and getting this thing off the ground. I'm hoping to toe that line where hardcore came out of punk in the 90's with a lot of heavy political themes. I'm hoping to stick to backing vocals but if we can't find someone I might try to do main vocals again. I'd like to take inspo from Anti-flag, Dystopia and a few other more crustier sounding bands, but I'm also curious about tossing in a bit of post-hardcore in there.

spoileri hate hate hate hate hate hate outdoor cat owners. some family recently moved in a few doors down and are letting their huge built as hell cats run all over the place and i'm terrified they're going to kill my neighborhood squirrels. i convinced myself that they would be safe cause the squirrels can climb away but i just saw one of the cats on our fence prowling and i'm losing it. have to stop feeding my squirrel friends at my window now so they don't get targeted, i'm fucking devastated. i don't want them to die. i don't understand why they can't just take their cats on supervised walks or something like what the fuck. the squirrels come to my window even when i just open the curtains sometimes like how do i get them not to come now??? lea-breakdown

i haven't seen chipmunk in a while too but i really really really really hope she is just hibernating and i haven't seen rabbit either but i hope they'll be ok cause they're really big catgirl-cry

Driving being presented as freedom is such a grift, oh yeah I truly am free just gotta allow these pedestrians and bicyclists where I can and can't drive

it's freedom compared to not having a car in a suburb where there's nowhere to walk to.

it's not freedom compared to a city with good public transit and cycling infrastructure

Played bass for the firsr time in a while without it being to record something and I forgot, I am an absolute riff merchant. I popped out like an hour of improvised Rites of Spring with a bit of mandatory Joy Division and then took the good riffs and made some songs. Ripping off tje progression from the intro to Adelleda by Alexisonfire but doing it punk mid tempo sounds great

I guess it's time to finally swap to Linux. I really haven't wanted to have to spend the energy to learn a new os and find new programs to do different things and everything; I have so little energy and there's so much to do. But microsoft have really decided to make it necessary.

I don't think Ableton works on Linux. Anyone have any DAW recommendations for Linux?
