The Occupation of Alcatraz was a 19-month long protest which began on this day in 1969, when 89 Native Americans and their supporters occupied and reclaimed Alcatraz Island as indigenous land.

The protest was led by Richard Oakes and Grace Thorpe. The group chose the name Indians of All Tribes (IOAT) for themselves and lived on the island together until the protest was forcibly ended by the U.S. government.

IOAT claimed that, under the Treaty of Fort Laramie between the U.S. and the Lakota tribe, all retired, abandoned, or out-of-use federal land was returned to the Indians who once occupied it.

By late May of 1971, the government had cut off all electrical power and all telephone service to the island. Left without power, fresh water, and in the face of diminishing public support and sympathy, the number of occupiers began to dwindle. On June 11th, 1971, a large force of federal officers removed the remaining 15 people from the island.

Chad at the gym wearing a red hammer-sickle shirt with yellow all caps "CCCP" on it.

Feels like doxing myself suggesting I live somewhere this is even slightly socially acceptable.

Had the pleasure of seeing an old friend for the first time in years. Told her my situation. Sometimes things have to take their course. And it sunk in now. It felt better, yeah I have this and that to consider, but also things just take turns like this. It acknowledged my feelings but also gently got me to move along. The breakup is starting to hurt a lot less. The sadness i feel is for me alone now. It was the healing i need, and a great justification for why i so strongly felt the desire to maintain this friendship fraught with troubles of all sorts.

Sometimes the advice you need feels like it has to come from someone who sees deep inside of you, even when it’s the same thing you’ve heard before.

Further out from the release state for my Foundry plugin than I thought I was. Now I need to figure out how to get the server to connect to Foundry as a player/gm, which is very silly but right now the workaround is to have it running in two windows which is even sillier.

For all the talk on :lib: social media of Gabe Newell being the One Good Billionaire, Steam could be taking a much smaller cut of the profits from game devs and still be massively profitable. Steam employees make from 100 to 300k and there are maybe 400 of them, no shareholders to speak of, and yet GabeN has the most expensive yacht in the world, or close to it, raking in billions.

I accidentally bought a sweater that's like 4 sizes too big but it'd take a 6 hour drive to return it so I kept it intending to cannibalize it and learn to sew. However it's been paying dividends in the cozy department of wearing-things-around-the-house Inc. so it will live to see another day

Self-critting on my earlier post about Chi Osse now that it’s less opaque where the lines were drawn on it, and since I also did some self-reflection on my initial reactions. I'm less wary that he's an opportunist now and I honestly think he should be endorsed next cycle if he continues to align with the socialist movement. I think I ended up negatively polarizing myself against it because I saw a lot of X Dot Com accounts I deem rather credulous making it into a sectarian wedge which rubbed against my outside-chapter view of the situation being more of a resource allocation debate.

TL;DR: fell-for-it-again

People still believe American propaganda about the DPRK because they never got invaded. If the Iraq war hadnt happened somehow people would totally believe Iraq still has WMD. The only way to prove you arent lying or that theyre lying about you to even some of the American people is to get invaded and devasted by war. Then 10 years later they'll say you should have been left alone.

[–] hello_hello@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Yes, thats pretty much true, the Korean War in the US is called "The Forgotten War" in history books because of the lack of television coverage that would permanently mark the invasions of Vietnam and subsequent operations (as well as any countercultural left)

Then the USaid, Radio Free propaganda apparatus was formed and nearly all information about the DPRK is filtered through ideology. Then POTUS Bush Junior added the DPRK to his infamous axis of evil speech (because of the rule of thirds) which is the basis for nearly all demonization of North Korea. Coverage on the DPRK was actually not as bad until then where it morphed into the "no haircuts you wear jeans you die" of today.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

I mean weren't invaded after rhe Korean War cause that's when it kinda became what it is. They didnt try again I guess.

I am so sick of seeing people just say any old bullshit about China. It is so fucking annoying that moronic us citizens who have never left heir shitty little corner of the world. Don't know shit about shit besides which funko pop misprint boxes are worth double. Somehow still thinks they are an expert on China because they can parrot some nonsense their worst uncle made up from facts he also didn't know. Slavering at the mouth to call it west taiwan, genuinely believing they aren't being played. It is so transparent and sad.

Cool so all the YouTube music playlists I had are now not only falling apart from copyright strikes, account closure and the like, now there are accounts taken over(?) that replace the songs with 60 minute audio talking about crypto currency investment (third track)

Ash just straight up trying to punch Mewtwo in the first movie is quite a move to make, but Mewtwo also uses that blue ball psychic shield he uses when figuting Mew to block. Ash is 10, just take the weak ass punch. The fact he had to use the shield would make me think anything he doesnt block with that would take him out instantly.

I finally gave Dogville a watch. As much as I adore pretentious art films, this movie just seems like a case where the director jerks himself off in your face with enough confidence that the cinema bros gave it rave reviews

I just found out that the whole Mr Beastland thing is only for 45 days, and then presumably they throw it all away. jfc the amount of waste that must be happening with this whole Riyadh festival thing must be catastrophic.

Like say what you want about American carnivals but the rides and attractions usually get packed up and travel to the next city when it's over.

It's so cool how gaming media consists 40% of people who think women shouldn't be in video games, and 40% of people who think you're entitled if you don't want to pay 200 dollars for a video game

Our department head invited himself to my team's end of year wrap up lunch. I'm gunna take a sick day instead (technically he's not our dept head he's the director of a related department but still

When I'm sparring in BJJ (martial art about submission wrestling) I have this idea that, as a brown belt (proximate to a black belt), I need to go a little harder against people so that they have something to aspire to. Like if the highest rank people are pushovers, why would you want to work hard? Why would you feel like the art has anything to offer you? But if the big dogs are flipping you into the ground and threatening a submission every other second then you're like "oh, I see the skills I could develop if I stick with it."

Well, this weekend a 0 stripe white belt came into the academy (as new as you can get). I go with them because I mean to be polite and welcoming. I usually just give them a dilemma and have them think their way through it. Like if I mount them but also their arms are up by their ears, I let them escape. This person tells me "don't go easy on me." It's so the opposite of what I usually hear. People are always like "don't break me. I have a job. I'm just going to sit down so we don't do stand up." I had to make sure I heard them correctly. After confirming it I have no qualms about it because, unlike traditional martial arts, I only really learned how to do it without any emphasis on any kind of moral code. So I think it sounds like fun.

Comrades, I go at this motherfucker at competition pace. I'm looking for throws and, if they had stepped back at a bad angle, I'd yank them and they'd have flipped over my hip or shoulder. I don't even need to bother with submissions because I simply jammed my knee into their stomach until they tapped. I'm doing aftercare after the "submissions," making sure they felt safe, respected, and they still wanted to do it. I keep squeezing them instead of getting chokes or joint locks. If ever I didn't have a clear attack and I needed to think for a split second, I yank on something so that only I get thinking time and they don't.

At the end they go "so, do you have any tips?" and I come out of a trance. It's as if I'd just come out of the avatar state and all my past incarnations had been looking at them like they were the firelord. I don't think I gave them much of a chance to do anything other than tap. So I'm just like "you should keep showing up to class." Then, upon reflection, I'm considering how that was the biggest thrashing I've given out in a long time. Like I just did violence to what is essentially a layman and there's nobody to talk to them or myself - the coach was lower rank than me so it's not like I'm looking at them for a thumbs up or thumbs down. We just go about the rest of the class after that. They appreciate it and thank me on their way out, so it seems like I lived up to expectations.

Had to drag myself out of bed because my mom left the water running again in the washroom. So fucking sick of having to constantly check no one else in this house is doing or not doing something fucking stupid.

The constant anxiety of wondering if something is going to break or someone is going to unjustly yell at me or cat h on fire because they're all too low IQ to not fuck up at basic tasks constantly.
