The Occupation of Alcatraz was a 19-month long protest which began on this day in 1969, when 89 Native Americans and their supporters occupied and reclaimed Alcatraz Island as indigenous land.
The protest was led by Richard Oakes and Grace Thorpe. The group chose the name Indians of All Tribes (IOAT) for themselves and lived on the island together until the protest was forcibly ended by the U.S. government.
IOAT claimed that, under the Treaty of Fort Laramie between the U.S. and the Lakota tribe, all retired, abandoned, or out-of-use federal land was returned to the Indians who once occupied it.
By late May of 1971, the government had cut off all electrical power and all telephone service to the island. Left without power, fresh water, and in the face of diminishing public support and sympathy, the number of occupiers began to dwindle. On June 11th, 1971, a large force of federal officers removed the remaining 15 people from the island.

Well, I guess I'm stating a political hardcore punk band.
I'm still healing from this divorce shit and something kind of amazing came out of it. I haven't been in the scene for damn near 20 years and only was able to go to a few shows when I was married. Well, we are apparently developing a scene in my city again, so I've been trying to make it out to shows as much as I can. A few months ago I was talking to some friends about how I wish we had a proper punk scene here. Discovered a local band named Social Anxiety and was hanging out with them last night at this sort of multi-genre show that they were playing at. I've also been talking to a few friends about possibly starting a band.
I bought a bass guitar this last week after not playing for 20 years, I am friends with 2 guitarists, and I might have possibly also found a drummer. Gonna see where this goes but if this project does take off I'll be stepping down from PSL and probably putting the web dev stuff on hold to pour all my time into relearning bass and getting this thing off the ground. I'm hoping to toe that line where hardcore came out of punk in the 90's with a lot of heavy political themes. I'm hoping to stick to backing vocals but if we can't find someone I might try to do main vocals again. I'd like to take inspo from Anti-flag, Dystopia and a few other more crustier sounding bands, but I'm also curious about tossing in a bit of post-hardcore in there.
Starting a band after getting a divorce is one of the healthier and cooler ways to be divorced.
It's way better than being a depressed piece shit and not doing anything. But I got Lexapro now so I'm not as depressed. I'm also working on a new book of poetry as well.
Hell yeah
Dystopia rocks. If you want like...infinite crust and anarcho punk to check out i am a very very deep well in that regard
Give me all the bands. I've been genre-hopping this last week to get a feel for what I wanna do.
The playlists on Spotify can be hit and miss. I'm not super familiar with crust but we did have a local band called The Great Unwashed back home that was crust. And Social Anxiety leans a lot into that crustiness too.
I did a big giant list for @Dort_Owl@hexbear.net a while back. Ill dig through my posts after work. Easier than re-writing. I know like...so fucking many bands its a bit hard to list
