I'm predicting this now: the series will flop like nutrek

[–] KurtVonnegut@hexbear.net 22 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Bold of you to predict that slop-loving Millennials won't absolutely love a 1-for-1 recreation of something they have already seen. The live-action Lion King movie was literally the highest-grossing animated movie of all time when it came out. Plus this new series is now a period piece, taking place in the 1990s with 1990s fashion, so it's hitting the same nostalgia-dopamine centers as Stranger Things did for the 1980s.

Sorry for spoilers but...

About the Lion King

It wasn't "live action" just animated different.

[–] BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk 4 points 2 months ago

Hol'up you're telling me they weren't real lions?

[–] Flyberius@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

Remind me if it does. I'll love it

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago

It’s moment may have finally ended

Honestly could see it flopping because it's a PG13 show at best and that just isn't HBO's brand

When I think HBO I think Sopranos or Game of Thrones and there's no way this shit doesn't look weak compared to the classic HBO lineup

Even if we didn't know exactly what happens the stakes are so low

Seeing how well Hogwarts Legacy did even though most people seem to consider it mediocre, I unfortunately believe it will do quite well.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Did it do well? They sold it 80% off months after release?

[–] worlds_okayest_mech_pilot@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Unfortunately, it did incredibly well. It made over $1 billion in revenue and is considered one of the best-selling video games of all time.

The generous sales seem to be just how WB Games does things. Batman, Lord of the Rings, etc. games from them were also like $5 barely a year after they came out.

Steamcharts says peak playerbase was half a million on steam alone at launch. Elden Ring had 950k peak all-time. I'd say that's pretty good for a middling open world.

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

I think, at best, the first couple of episodes will do well, then the viewership will take a nosedive.

[–] hollowmines@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

All the replies are like "but everyone provably loves pre-existing franchise/IP slop!!" and I agree with them all but I do think there's a chance the vibes on this end up being so off that they end up not finishing out the series. Especially if there's another corporate shuffle over the course of that time.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

Not convinced, but I do think the trend for this franchise was set in motion when that game released and people's attitudes towards the franchise have been getting worse ever since.

I grew up with the LotR and ASoIaF series, so I never dig the HP. Afaik, the writer projects her right-wing worldviews onto the series, like using stereotypical names for the characters.

[–] moss_icon@hexbear.net 27 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

One of the characters, Hermione, gets mocked for being anti-slavery and the book says that she’s wrong for her beliefs because the slaves like being slaves.

Rowling then retroactively implied that Hermione could be a black woman.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 18 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Oh, and Draco Malfoy was obviously given a forced redemption. The wizard Nick Fuentes, and the dursleys, a family of skinhead trash later on were also framed as just misunderstood.

[–] moss_icon@hexbear.net 20 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Snape’s redemption is even more pathetic.

Wizarding Nazi who called the woman he lusted for the Wizarding n-word, treated the son of said woman like absolute shit and abused schoolkids and then it’s posthumously revealed that he was actually a double agent purely because the Wizarding Nazis killed the woman mentioned previously and not because he had any kind of morals whatsoever.

[–] woodenghost@hexbear.net 20 points 2 months ago

But it's so romantic to obsess over someone who rejected you for very good reasons for decades. /s

[–] XiaCobolt@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

The Dursleys, a family of skinhead trash later on were also framed as just misunderstood.

Also she shot down the actually interesting theory that because Harry was a horcrux he corrupted the dursleys. Which would have it's own problems but at least would have been an interesting twist.

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago

Oh, and Draco Malfoy was obviously given a forced redemption. The wizard Nick Fuentes.

Nick Fuentes is (surprisingly) a grown adult, the HP characters are kids. I'm not even sure they're 18 by the time the series ends. A 16-year-old who was raised by wizard supremacists can absolutely still redeem himself.

[–] Poutine@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago

Rowling then retroactively implied that Hermione could be a black woman.

I hadn't heard about this, but this somehow makes the four books' worth of mocking her for her hair texture even worse.

[–] SerialExperimentsGay@hexbear.net 16 points 2 months ago (1 children)

She is also a major backer of anti-trans campaigning in the UK. Like, people defending that they still are into HP always say "i'm not on twitter, idk what she says on there", but JKR's transphobia isn't about her having nuclear takes online anymore, she is at the point were she pumps money into hate groups going on trial to erode trans rights. Successfully, too, the last two cases she funded first led to trans women no longer being legally recognized as women and then a trans woman being sentenced to 2 years in a man's prison for consensually blowing a guy without telling him she was trans. She's also connected to about every single major transphobe in the UK personally at this point, she's basically the figurehead of the movement there.

[–] moss_icon@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

She and fellow TERF Graham Linehan have also directly encouraged violence and the invasion of privacy against not just trans people, but anyone a person even suspects might be trans.

Rowling is also a Holocaust denier and has outright denied the fact that trans people were persecuted in Nazi Germany. She is one of the defining reasons myself and other genderqueer people’s lives are being made miserable where I live.

[–] Philosoraptor@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I definitely wouldn't consider Graham Lineham a TERF. He's just a misogynist ghoul who also hates trans people.

[–] Parzivus@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah there's an Asian girl named Cho Chang and a black guy named Shacklebolt. Reads like South Park sometimes

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

Don't forget the Irish kid named Seamus Finnigan who's constantly blowing stuff up.

[–] Omegamint@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Honestly HBO would be better off adapting something like the First Law trilogy, burning money on Harry Potter sucks.

[–] Philosoraptor@hexbear.net 1 points 2 months ago

Man, a First Law adaptation would slap if done well.

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 16 points 2 months ago (1 children)

it would be really funny if the second Harry gets to Hogwarts she learns that transitioning is just a potion away and does it and everyone supports her and then everything else happens exactly the same just with a female protagonist.

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

But then you still have to watch Harry Potter

[–] Sneakytrickyyy@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

Libs: "I'm fine with genociding Palestinians because they're LGBTphobic"
Also Libs: "How dare you shame me for giving money to the Queen of Transphobes"

[–] anotherspinelessdem@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 months ago

I always wondered how Rowling's internal logic worked when she literally wrote a book about some boys sneaking into a girls' bathroom and then transitioning.
