This being about Peak totally makes sense. One of the best five bucks I've ever spent. Actually, it was ten bucks because I bought a copy for my girlfriend so we can play together.

To think you could spend twenty bucks to play a game with four friends for less than the price of a single AAA game is wild. And it still goes on sale too!

[–] Strayce@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 4 hours ago

I'm upset at how much sense this makes to me.

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 15 points 6 hours ago

The industry has spent millions on hiring psychologists to figure this shit out instead of making games more fun.

[–] PurrLure@hexbear.net 11 points 7 hours ago

This is how they start off gacha game addicts.

Eight bucks is ten bucks, wtf are they smoking

[–] Volcatile@hexbear.net 15 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

counterpoint: $7.99 is five dollars

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 1 points 17 minutes ago

well it has 7 in there and thats only 2 more than 5... thinking-about-it

[–] HiImThomasPynchon@hexbear.net 21 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Similarly, I bought a record recently for €30, and as long as I keep thinking of it as €, it's not real money.

[–] hypercubie4@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 6 hours ago

all money isn’t real if you really think about it, I’d keep spending it!

I'm afraid $7.50 is the most expensive 5 bucks in my book

That makes complete sense. I usually make things up in the price of a pita shawarma, but it's the same concept. I think it falls under the broad category of "girl math"

edit: Broad category: girl math kelly

Yeah, but I think I've got proof
7.95 = 5
7.99 = 7.95
8 =/= 10
8 =/= 5
8 =/= 7
However
n = n.99 - 1
Therefore
7.99 = 8
So
8 = 7.99 = 7.95 = 5

It only works for 7 and 8 because those are uncomfortable numbers that we want to be another number, but going from 8 to 10 is too big because we go from one digit to two.

edit: additionally if 6 was 8 it also wouldn't work, because 6 is a number that feels wrong to mess with. Hence why, when people ballpark amounts, they often guesstimate "about 6 or 7". This also leads on to reinforce the current gen alpha 67eeen mindworm

I think it falls under the broad category of "girl math"

Please explain to me how this isn't misogyny.

[–] RION@hexbear.net 32 points 10 hours ago

Would u like that in a girl math proof or traditional

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 6 points 7 hours ago

It's actually misandrist because girl math is actual math. Originally it had to do with how a person earmarked money spent and not spending it and deciding to spend it on something else and considering that to cost zero. But that works out economically as that money was already spent and it is, in fact, how economists consider spending. So as it turns out, "girl math" is just conventional economics and "guy math" is wrong as guys are effectively emotionally "spending" the money twice.

I'll have to watch that vid later! Can't watch stuff at work!

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girl_math it's just a meme, and not even one of the problematic ones.

[–] Are_Euclidding_Me@hexbear.net 11 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, alright, but it still seems like misogyny to me. Just like "girl dinner", except worse because of the pervasive (and extremely incorrect) stereotype that women are bad at math.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 2 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

I get that. I used to feel like that about a bunch of stuff, now I try to tap out

[–] woodenghost@hexbear.net 13 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

That article goes on to explain how it is misogyny right there.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 2 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

Yeah, I just grabbed the first thing that explained the meme. Who would have figured wikipedia was saying silly things shrug-outta-hecks

[–] mickey@hexbear.net 19 points 9 hours ago

It does! Also these companies put so much effort into understanding consumer psychology that hearing a developer explain how they mean to separate you from your money, it feels refreshing that I'm not being condescended to for once.

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 21 points 11 hours ago

yep they got my number lol

[–] LeninsBeard@hexbear.net 42 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Broke: Stores setting prices to $X.99 to trick consumers into thinking things are a dollar cheaper

Woke: Whatever the fuck this is

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 17 points 9 hours ago

nah this is bespoke.

woke is including tax in the posted price

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 38 points 12 hours ago

If you get as cheap as I am you feel the daggers of every dollar increase and this fuzzy math logic goes away.

[–] Nacarbac@hexbear.net 38 points 12 hours ago

The price point knows where it is, because it knows where it isn't.

How can eight-to-five possibly be the biggest differential when eight-to-four is $1 bigger and obviously just as valid given that $4 = $5?

[–] Florn@hexbear.net 20 points 10 hours ago

It just means that $4 is the least optimal variant of $5, while $8 is the most optimal
