We are in the greatest richest time of prosperity America has ever seen. Also, mixing in sawdust is a great way to save money on cooking big-cool

The underselling bakeries of 1820s London would be proud.

I think if I lose my job that's it it's time for actionable threats. If I or my partner lose our jobs I don't think we can keep this stupid house

Have been in one since 1970 if you go by metrics that impact reality 😉

i saw a comment giving "advice" in saving money at Thanksgiving and it started with advocating generic/store-brand items before wrapping up with "just skipping the meal altogether".

it seemed to be completely serious.

Here's a money saving tip: just don't spend money! Where's my Pulitzer prize?

Thank you I was constipated on the toilet and this made me snort, giving me the last amount of push I needed

“Food to expensive? Don’t eat!”

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I only know Thanksgiving from American TV shows so maybe I miss something important but it seems to be entirely about the food and having your racist uncle yell at you. So what's even the point?

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 19 points 2 months ago

its just a big shared meal. like its on a thursday, so banks and a lot of non retail businesses historically gave everyone thursday and friday off. like a 4 day weekend.

its not really a ton of time for travel, but generally family that live near each other come to a house. the host does a turkey in the oven, maybe others bring a dish. common items include mashed potatoes, creamed corn, pumpkin pie. i.e. "fall harvest" items.

show up, eat/drink, watch an american football game, argue, nap, and then split the leftovers to take home.

next day (friday) is leftovers or shopping for deals if you are one of those freaks.

i live too far from family to make the trip, but for several years i went to this "friendsgiving" thing where all the far-from-home people clustered at a house for a big potluck and it was easily my fave holiday of the year. just come together with a mix of friends/new people, eat some food, and hangout/go home when its dark.

the idea of "celebrating" Thanksgiving without food is like Christmas without gifts or halloween without candy/costumes. it would be absurd.

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

White collar dipshits who think the food is the most expensive part of the holidays right now. Like, a single video game costs as much as feeding 10-12 people on thanksgiving.

[–] NinaPasadena@hexbear.net 62 points 2 months ago

Definitely a good sign for the "economy" when major news outlets tell people not to spend during the official spending season.

Millennials are killing the slipper, and all the other gift obligation, industries!

Millennials are launching a war on Black Friday and Cyber Monday!

But remember to give your boss a gift.

thx for the tip classic

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 38 points 2 months ago

Christians understanding the true meaning of Christmas is, unironically, one of the strongest recession indicators I can think of.

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 36 points 2 months ago (1 children)

SAVING money on thanksgiving??? I MAKE money on thanksgiving, because instead of celebrating I'm hustling and grinding like a true sigma

[–] LocalMaxima@hexbear.net 17 points 2 months ago

Im so productive, I have 3 thanksgivings: midnight to 8 am, 8 to 4pm and 4pm to midnight. By the time you are sitting down for dinner, I’ve already 10x’d my Thanksgiving

war on christmas? more like war on black friday

[–] Posadas@hexbear.net 25 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They're actually just pushing for that be White Power Week

[–] DylanMc6@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

i mean the war on black friday as in shopping after thanksgiving. seriously!

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 28 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Amazing, literally canceling Christmas and somehow this will be the left's fault.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

"There still exists people who privately disagree with us! And this mistrust to our dear corporate overlords just hypnotizes them into being greedy! It's not enough to keep your non-fascism to yourself! You should be forced to enthusiastically agree with corporate fascism or the apocalypse will literally happen!"

[–] Marty_TF@lemmy.zip 25 points 2 months ago

they will be the first to complain when the christmas business is going down as a sign of the war on christmas

[–] Parzivus@hexbear.net 18 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Getting grandma slippers is an investment. Even disregarding stuff like inheritance, spending $20 to keep your relatives from having a bad opinion of you is worth it unless you're about to be homeless or some shit

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

Also wiser to be the one to pick the slippers she'll hit you with

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 2 months ago

Does depend on if she likes slippers, is stable enough to wear slippers or is still cognitive enough to know she was gifted something 😭
