The problem is LoU part 1 story was great.
Part 2 story just isn't that good. Game and show both. It's just not as solid, interesting, or compelling of a story. It's sequelitis. Part 2 story just doesn't really justify itself, and feels forced.
Wow typical hollywood elite disconnected from the common experience. WE HATE THE GAMES TOO AND WE’LL NEVER STOP WATCHING
Hey, remember when the totally not pathetic and unhinged fandom of these games were threatening the lives of Laura Bailey and her baby because they didn't like the actions of the fictional character she voiced?
Pepperidge Farm remembers...
What now? What happened?
This type of thing does crack me up. If the media being created is not entertaining then I don't watch it. There is so much media that is made that I have more than enough to watch in my lifetime if for some reason all movies and tv shows stopped getting made right now.
I was mildly peeved about the fallout tv show making decisions I didn't like, so I didn't watch it. If future games are affected, I'll just skip or mod them. Some people are just emotionally barely holding on, I guess.
I loved both the games and the show but I’m not so connected to the fandom. What is it they don’t like about her or the show?
Guess I'll put my two cents in, the writing has not been great in season 2, and unfortunately Ramsey is still learning how to act with a range of emotions besides "strong, mildly snarky, girl". Not her fault since she's still just a kid, but I can see why people find some of her scenes awkward. Combine that with the previously mentioned bad writing, and S02 just wasn't as strong as S01.
Combine that with neckbeards upset that the emotionally traumatized characters in a post-apocalyptic society aren't hot enough to match their fantasies and you get a lot of complaints online, with not enough people willing to defend the show to tell them to shut up and stop being horny neckbeards.
I personally am more inclined to blame the writing than Ramsey's acting. They made some weird choices about her character — just lots of little things that stack up to feeling quite weird
For me It's mostly that I miss Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay acting together. They had such great chemistry.
They hate the fact they can't get an erection when trying to jerk it to the 14 year old character she portraits. Also Abby is butch but not lesbian, which they just cannot comprehend.
I thought those people were already not playing the game. Are tourists pretending to be fans to stir shit?
Ellie: “Hey, Abby, how did you get so jacked?”
Abby: “Every time I remember how much I hate Joel, I do one push up.”
Ellie: “Jesus Christ…”
I didn’t believe you until I just googled and saw how mad the fans were about literally this. 🤮
Like, Ellie is practically your daughter in the game. What the actual fuck?!
No wonder Bella ignores fans comments online!
If you would like to loose even more faith in humanity you can look up what the "fandom" did to Laura Bailey who voices Abbey.
I'm willing to bet a lot of those people haven't ever had platonic love, and confuses how much the game makes you care about Ellie, with romantic love.
Either that or they're just fucked up and should crawl back into their hole of shame.
I’d like to direct you to Elizabeth from Boston’s Infinite 😅
The whole rule34 CGI genre was invented because of her
My problem with tlou2 is that all the marketing leading up to the game heavily featured Joel, and then 90% of the game you play as Ellie. Felt kinda bait and switch. I watched the first season of the show but didn't really care for it so I tuned out.
I imagine that’s to ensure the huge shock of Joel’s death was kept under wraps. If Joel was mysteriously missing from most of the trailer, the internet no doubt would have sussed it out.
I loved playing Ellie. For so much of the game, I shared her deep desire for revenge too. And then playing Abby and growing connected to their story, by the end, I was so torn.
A really unique experience I haven’t had before in a game.
Just rewarched the ads. They are misremembering. It was very clear from the ads that Ellie wa the focus. Joel isn't even in half of the ads from before the game released, and barely in some of the ones he is.
You made me think I was crazy because I remembered mostly the commercials featuring the seraphites hanging scenes, the dance with Dina and Ellie kissing, and some stuff with Ellie fighting Wolves. So I verified, and you are misremembering. Just fast forwarded through every ad for the game before release, Joel is only even in, MAAAYBE half of them, if that. And barely in them at all in most of the ones he is. The one that features him the most is almost all footage from the first game. I'm also pretty sure that the devs were open about that fact that Ellie would be the focus of the game from the time it was announced.
If anything the bait and switch was making people think she was getting revenge for something that happened to Dina.
Sure, but like... are we mad they didn't spoil major plot points and obfuscate the biggest death of the series?
The Shield had one dude taking part in the press tour and all. Was in the promo material etc.
He was killed in the first ep to make a point to the audience.
They don’t think the child is sexy enough to represent the sexy child in the video games.
Yes that’s what they think. It’s super fucked up.
You love both the games and still managed to like the show? An anomaly. The games are written incredibly. Acted incredibly. With an incredible and complex story.
The show takes that and adds a heaping handful of “but what if we forget about the story part and made everyone idiotic and unbearable?”
I played Last of Us 1, Part 2 flew completely under my radar because I considered the story to be feature complete in Part 1, similar to the Matrix movies.
I've played enough Project Zomboid and Escape from Tarkov to understand that virtually everyone is dead in under a year given an actual zombie apocalypse (myself including).
The artists are just self-gratifying themselves using the backdrop of post apocalypse as a scene or set dressing for a fundamentally "human" story.
Paradoxically, you'd imagine it would be about that -- realistically nobody has time for "vengeance plots" in a truly apocalyptic scenario, going out of your way after someone ensures your statistical average over 250 million raids 30% probability of survival is going to be tested again.
They can write whatever they want, but ideally they should just have written a drama instead in a different setting.
Well you’re describing the game. The show entirely missed the part where they’re writing any kind of quality “human” story.
Oh, don't worry. They hated that too.
Good idea tbh
Ok. I won’t. I gave up after trying to watch season two. I just couldn’t get into it, even though I enjoyed season one. I dunno if it’s because it was boring, I’m zombied out, or they waited too long to come back on the air for me to feel invested anymore.
Didn’t play the games so I have no reference, but I thought Season 1 was excellent! The third episode had me fuckin’ bawling my eyes out lol. I thought it was a stellar episode! Overall touching, wholesome, etc. The vibe Season 1 also seemed more “real” (in the event fungus zombies were to become real.).
Idk if/how much Season 2 was true to the game but I didn’t really enjoy it.
Bella’s acting fell flat imo, it seemed like she couldn’t shake being constantly awkward on screen. The story focus on Ellie’s gf’s pregnancy was weird and all of the dialogue surround it was pretty shit. I personally found it rather disjointed to have that one episode end in a stanky fingering scene — like they’d be so fuckin dirty bro, and are the characters supposed to be so naïve/ignorant that they don’t consider maybe the pregnant girl could get a very inconvenient UTI in a dangerous place? My girlfriend took personal issue with the makeup, hair, and clothing choices by the showrunners lol. It overall felt like the writers didn’t know what they wanted or what they were doing but felt as if they should shoehorn therapy-talk/themes in it at every corner.
I personally wished we got more zombies or story behind the militia group.
I don't think it was Bella's acting that fell short. I think they just gave them shitty writing. Bella portrayed Ellie's character so well in S1 (never played the game) and S2 is just a different person. Even the flashbacks in S2 have S1 Ellie vibes.
Long gaps kill momentum between seasons.
I feel like I have to rewatch the first season before the second of it's more than a year.
Yeah, I now keep a note of shows that I'm interested in and then later watch it when it is completed and the final season is well reviewed. Like Andor for example. Was a very good show and I was happy I could watch at my own pace instead of 2 year gaps between seasons.
I'd have forgotten everything and lost the emotional connections I had developed for the characters if I had watched it as it aired. But most importantly forgotten so much.
I find I can't get into any show unless it is at least 3 seasons in and it sounds like the show will be able to wrap up properly.
I watched the first season of Wheel of Time thinking there's no way someone would start an ambitious series like that with 13 books of source material without planning to finish it. Ugh.
I didn't even make it through Season 1 of Wheel of Time...
I can't remember a single character name, or any of their personalty. Or chemistry. There must have been very little?
I remember Rosamund Pike was in it. She's always delightful.
I actually do remember her, yeah.
True
Clever girl. Stephen King said the same thing about Under the Dome. Under the Dome sucked, by the way. The show. The book was okay but had a dumb ending. Still a good book. Stephen King often bumbles the endings. It's fine, the journey makes a lousy destination worth it.
I wish the game were loved enough by its creators to get releases on PC, Mac, and Xbox. Being exclusive to a platform I don't have means I can't play it. Though, I do have a PS3 and I think TLOU 1 is on that. I might even have it. I haven't turned on the PS3 in so long. Nothing against it, I liked it more than the 360 and XB1 (though, not more than the XSX), just haven't been into serious gaming in so long. Anyway, I'm sure she's talking about TLOU2 which was only on PS4/PS5 IIRC; seasons 2 and 3 are based on it and that game wasn't as popular as the first one. (IMO it's because Ellie let horny teenage boys down by coming out as gay; I think a lot of people were shipping her with guys, some even with Joel, which is all kinds of wrong (he's 3x her age and she's like 16 in the first game?). I've seen art, but whatever. I liked the first season. I also like Bella Ramsey, would watch her in just about anything. She won me over as that sassy Stark ally in Game of Thrones.
Both games have been out on PC for awhile now. Part 1 was released in March of '23 and Part 2 was released in April of this year. Part 1 is on Steam for $30 and Part 2 for $40.
Edit: To clarify, they're currently on sale which is listed to end 9/1.
