I know people are going to hate where I first found this but at least its this guys blog. I actually know the guy and saw it on linkendin and he does exist. Heck you can look at his stuff on the evl website. Its rather verbose and academic in language but I appreciate his callouts.

Just to be clear im talking about chatbots. When they started I saw them as just the next abstraction of search. In the workplace I saw them do things that while nice really did not do more than specific programs or add ons did already. I also had concerns on the energy usage. Then I saw them get image generation and vidoe generation and of course what we have seen made since.

Now I have been using them more and part of that is I have come to terms somewhat with the energy usage. Curiously I find they can actually save energy in certain scenarios. Like if you entertain yourself with one over streaming video (even stadard def) or for that matter learned something using a youtube video. Even as search while it uses something like 5 to 10 times the energy it provides information equivalent to several searches. I would say at least 3 in my cases and often more. So I am leaning to in most cases it is worth using with the caveat of like using the web you have to evaluate what you get back. Its kinda funny because one reason for my long skepticism is any defending I got back on its energy uses with (presumably) people sounded very much like the answer an ai would give if you asked it about it. Much like most ai info it takes some refinement to get to the point where I feel the answer is sound. A note of caution in that if the ai is remember things it will use more energy over time as it keeps track of the conversation. I have seen various things indicating they are working on improving the memory mangement with patterns and tags and colder storage. Anyway it will be good both for the environment and privacy to start new chats and not have it save stuff. I am encouraged that the companies are working both the hardware and software angles with dedication ai chips along with mini models and specialized models.

Ok so long term there has always been the argument that its going to get better and better and build on itself till (sometimes) implied agi is achieved. I do not know about that but I will say I continue to see improvements. besides the image and video generation I mentioned I am finding the chatbots are getting more nuanced in answering and can respond to requests for more nuance better. I see less yes manning. I think it still biases yes but only when there is a tie. I generally see it defend its answer when it has solid data but at the same time accept correction readily. I find it can now play games which honestly was one of the earlier things I asked them to do when testing them out. I don't think any of these are necesarilly driving it toward agi but I definatley thinks this shows it has a lot of places it can dip its tendrils into.

My honest opinion is I have softened to it since it started and if it were not for corpo enshitification type things driving me further from technology. I think I would kind of like it. Like smartphones and this in a utopian world of privacy and no bias where you could trust the systems. Would be pretty awesome

Ok this is going to sound pretty wierd but I think the use case is solid especially going forward. So with really specific communities that you are not really a part of that you are not a part of but would like to see what comes out of it. Well it would be nice to sorta be stopped from posting or replying. Maybe not completely but to give you a warning. So my example is there is a medicine community for medical professionals (this is a bit odd for me as I did work in blood diagnostics for a few years and have a micorbiology degree but it is a long ago and relative to my age short span of my life) and I don't view myself as part of that community. In some cases maybe I block the community if im uninteresed so I don't peanut gallery them but in this I sorta want to see them. So it would be nice to like mark it so I see posts and replies and stuff but as I said if I reply or post it might give me a popup that says something like you marked this community read only to remind me observing a conversation of professionals that expect to be conversing with people in their own field.

Ok. So admitadely the morning show has a regular thing with the weather guy hating everything that are obviously very popular but he through bike lanes in and man. You don't even joke about that stuff especially in chicago. The bike community and active transit alliance has had to fight hard for our infrastructure and I don't think he understands the jar of bees he is opening here. Especially given the claps you hear out of camera from the other hosts. Maybe it will fly under the radar but we will see.

There is something goofy going on such that I stopped seeing updates on this community. Not sure if its piefed or lemmy but I have found there is some blocking going on with piefed and im in the process of maybe going back to mbin or finding a piefed instance that is dedicated to minimal blocking/defederation. As some may know from my comments I have a rough situation going on so its gotta sorta fit between me doing stuff I really need to do (on hold for figuring out my 2026 insurance where its in one system but not showing in another) so this switch over is not high priority. Some may be pretty happy to stop the daily dp but I hope to sort out my identity in the federation and get back to the little daily practice. I was going to stop when I got a job but unfortunately that is not gonna happen although I may be substitute teaching soon.

So was thinking about doing a location based version of marry, fuck, kill. Three locations. One you would like to live in, one you would like to visit on vacation and one you would like to party down in. For the purposes of this don't worry about language or politics or affordability. More about weather, infrastructure, beuty, etc. For me toronto to live in because im a city boy and like the thought of being able to take my dog with me on transit (if that is still a thing), vacation is tokyo and partially (if money is no object) to go to that ultra ritzy onsen. Party wise im tempted by new orleans which I have been too but im watching global fireworks and Bangkok looked amazing with the 20 story high buddha. I think though I have to go with amsterdam which also spreads out my choices nicely globally.

There was a local item for kids new years at noon today and I was talking with my wife that I feel like that would make more sense to do on actual new years day since you are still kinda celebrating the new year that has arrived even if noon is a bit arbitrary. I do enjoy throwing up the various major cities new years countdowns as they pass. Usually by the time I get around to it I have to play catchu up starting with auckland which I have not even started today yet but then again I think the firework displays tend to not get uploaded for a few hours.

Wait we can do whatever we want if society does not care about us becuase I live in the US?!

I felt like posting this one because what it portrays is the way I feel about the internet. I feel it started with a lot of useful information and some screwing around and some total bs. I then feel useful info grew linearly while screwing around grew exponentially while the totaly bs has grown at a much higher factorial.

I just don't get how people bought the whole trickle down economics. You look at tax rates since ww2 and lowering taxes has continually lead to worse outcomes. Our biggest bumps have been from the clinton and obama tax increases.

So the holidays got me off schedule and I did not post the DP since xmass eve. Just gonna list the links here. Sorry that it makes it a bit harder to casually look over.

So a bit back it sounds like crunchy roll is drying up what was an already annoying free offering. Is there any legitamate free tier worth signing up for currently that anyone knows about. Also I need dubs at this point as my eyes just can't handle subtitles now.
