It's not really a secret china's military is exceptionally incompetent and poorly trained/ran.

Redditors don’t seem very confident in Taiwan if their best comparisons are against a country that ate shit against the USSR and a country currently eating shit against Russia

i'd like to bring up the UAE Swat competition, which is a sports contest between the world's most elite piggies to see who the best donut eater is. It's been going on since 2019 and China regularly dominates, usually with multiple teams in the top 10. It's not exactly the PLA or anything, but I think it's revealing to compare different paramilitaries.

A Chinese team ended up with first place in 2025's contest whereas the best funded paramilitary in the world, the NYPD, scored...84th.

"we made 200 cops play league of legends to see how many slurs they could use in 40 minutes, ranked by inventiveness, forcefulness, speed and enunciation"

[–] Lavender@hexbear.net 38 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well obviously that's because they keep rejecting the NYPD's petition to add brutalizing Black people to the contest.

[–] Biggay@hexbear.net 25 points 2 months ago

Hey theyre the best at brutalizing more than just black people, besides if they allowed that into the competition NYPD would go all Columbine on the competition

[–] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 28 points 2 months ago (2 children)

If people wanna actually watch the China and NYPD highlights (well, "highlights" in the case of the boys in blue) and/or check out the standings without using that truly awful website, see my earlier comment and the replies, which has timestamped links for all the events as well as full standings in table form:

[–] axont@hexbear.net 29 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Thank you. I'm particularly fond of how the Chinese snipers will hit a target in like 3 seconds then move on while the NY pigs will take minutes to set up and then miss multiple times

[–] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 29 points 2 months ago

The NYPD sniper fumbling with the magazine in the Tactical event like he's in an infomercial is just chefs-kiss He spends as much time fighting the magazine as it takes for the Chinese sniper to run through the door, get prone, ready the rifle, aim, and take the shot

In October of 2021 a US Sub operating in the south China sea was disabled and forced to surface at which point it slowly limped back to guam. The official story is that it struck an object, but i remember at the time that it was near a Chinese Naval Base, and was being tailed by Chinese planes as it fled. People speculated China had disabled it. Afterwards the subs captain was relieved of duty.

Another thing to note is that it does appear as though the Chinese Type 55 destroyer is the most effective Destroyer currently being fielded by any nation. It is similar to a new type of destroyer the US had been trying to field, but had to give up on because it was too expensive to get it working. They threw so much money at it too lol.

The Chinese are also making good progress, and have been spotted doing test flights of a new medium range fighter bomber with 3 engines that could theoretically sink a US Aircraft Carrier.

On top of that simulations show China able to sink a US Carrier Group with nothing but land based hypersonic missiles. These same missiles can be launched by their new plane.

It's also important to note that the US was forced into a ceasefire with the Houthis who are the military of the poorest country on earth lol. If Yemen can do that idk what China could do but i can't imagine it would go well for the US. Considering Taiwan is armed, and trained by the US, and is reliant on them militarily that seems pretty relevant to this.

You even have literal US military leadership sounding the alarm that they are eating into their stockpiles of weapons. In their statement calling China the "most capable potential adversary in the world"

[–] fox@hexbear.net 43 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What if the US pours another ten billion dollars into making two planes and a battleship? They're loaded to the gills with wunderwaffen designed by six companies, manufactured in eighteen different states and assembled in another twelve.

[–] Xiisadaddy@lemmygrad.ml 41 points 2 months ago (8 children)

Ten billion is lay money. If you want the US to REALLY win you need to spend 1.7 trillion and be 10 years late. https://fortune.com/longform/lockheed-martin-f-35-fighter-jet/

Ignore the fact that these "biggest success story" planes have been falling into the red sea.

I mean the truth is that China would probably have issues at the start of a major conflict if one broke out, but that would be because they haven't been fighting wars constantly for the last forty years so there's institutional knowledge that the PLA just doesn't have.

But that said China is also well aware of this institutional knowledge problem, and regularly tries to negate it, ie by hiring retired American military pilots to come and train the PLAAF ones. It's impossible to say whether that makes up for the gap or not until a peer conflict actually breaks out.

edit: plus the last time China fought America they achieved all of their military goals and forced us to sign a peace treaty and that was seventy years ago when they were still way behind technologically so

[–] Xiisadaddy@lemmygrad.ml 49 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Can i just point out that while the US might have been in wars plenty they also have absolutely 0 experience in an actual near peer war. Like the wars the US has fought are basically always one sided. While i guess it's better than no experience it's not that great. The only countrys with any real experience in a true modern war is Russia and Ukraine.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 18 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The only countrys with any real experience in a true modern war is Russian and Ukraine.

I'd add Iran and the long list of countries involved in the Second Congo War (plus several ongoing conflicts in that region) to that, as well. Even though they haven't fought wars with drones, they have fought conventional wars against other professional armies/peers rather recently. India and Pakistan also have a lot of experience due to all the skirmishes with neighbors. They haven't fought all-out wars, though, due to both countries having nukes as deterrents.

If any of these countries got involved in an escalated conflict, they wouldn't take long to catch up. Russia and Ukraine are just where all the cutting-edge tech from world powers is being used.

I won't say there are literally zero lessons, but the tactical and strategic circumstances between ukraine/russia and taiwan/china are so immensely different that it really gives the impression that this person thinks that war is conducted via vibes.

Finland ate shit. The Finland myth is so braindead. Maybe in the not too distant future we'll get a Ukraine myth.

Simo Haya and the Ghost Of Kiev are the same sort of mythology

Yeah they tried so hard with the Ghost Of Kiev but unfortunately for them the Ghost of Kiev was literally a ghost lmao. Literally did not exist

Also because now we have surveillance and media on a whole other level so some guy saying he killed 500 people in his diary isn't as easy to take at face value.

This is because the soviet union took what it claimed and nothing else which barely changed the maps

So it's easy to misunderstand or mislead the situation

How are these people gonna cope when Ukraine loses everything and Russia makes virtually no concessions?

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 36 points 2 months ago

If Trump is in office: Ukraine was on the verge of victory, but because Trump is Putin’s boyfriend Trump handed over the Donbas to Putin. If it happens after Trump’s term is over: Trump weakened the military support for Ukraine, because he’s Putin’s boyfriend, and that’s why Ukraine, which was on the verge of victory until 2025, lost.

Ukraine isn't going to lose everything though? Current offer being talked about is Ukraine withdraws from the parts of Donetsk oblast not currently under Russian control, and the frontline is frozen elsewhere. Even if Russia pursues their current maximalist demands of putting Kherson, Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia under full Russian control, that's still a far cry from the initial war goals of demilitirisation and denazification, and the terms that were discussed at Istanbul where Ukraine was set to be limited to a standing army of less than 100 000 members, a handful of attack helicopters, and no long range rocket artillery or missiles. Yes Ukraine would have had more territory under the Istanbul deal, but their military power would've been almost non existent.

I mean it doesn't look good when a Philippines coast guard vessel essentially gets a "maneuver kill" on a Chinese Navy destroyer and Chinese coast guard vessel, with both Chinese ships colliding into each other while chasing down the Philippines ship. That's an embarrassing mistake that is on China, of course redditors are going to use the opportunity to gloat even if it's not grounded in facts. We'd do the same if two US Navy ships collided.

[–] mortemtyrannis@lemmy.ml 18 points 2 months ago

Filipinos are the backbone of international shipping. Highly experienced sailors and shouldn’t be underestimated.

Yes, China could still take the Phillipines (they are also very aware of this) but on average I think captains of Filipino ships are likely to be better skilled than their Chinese counterparts.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 30 points 2 months ago (4 children)

I do wonder how people in the west will react when their nations do actually start a war with China. The way they act it is obvious they think it'll be like a colonial war from the 1800s where soldiers will just charge in and "shoot the savages"

So I wonder how they will react to seeing news of Chinese ships sinking the US fleet, China has actively built their navy to counter the US, so any actual battles will almost certainly result in a Chinese victory. Will they just insist that because half a dozen Chinese whitewater craft were sunk, it means that the US won the battle even though they lost 3-4 aircraft carriers in the process? Will the US just stay out of range of Chinese ships and fire the occasional potshot, which the western media apparatus will claim was a "devastating blow" to the Chinese? Will they just ignore reality entirely and make up a fictional narrative about China being "on the ropes" even as the US military completely collapses? It's one thing to have that sort of attitude towards a war in Ukraine, where it is far away enough for them to never notice any material consequences of the conflict, but the US going directly to war with China will make it too hard to hide losses from the public, even during the Iraq war, the media apparatus failed to properly keep a lid on everything that was going on, and this war will be orders of magnitude bigger. I do wonder if these people will simply declare reality itself to be Chinese propaganda, even when faced with it directly.
