Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

spoilerTwo U.S. troops were killed Tuesday in a vehicle rollover in New Mexico and another U.S. service member was hospitalized in serious condition, U.S. defense officials said, marking the first known military fatalities associated with President Donald Trump’s expanded mission at the southern border. The accident occurred at 8:50 a.m. near Santa Teresa, a border town west of El Paso, the military said in a statement. Three defense officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the matter is under investigation, said the incident involved U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton in California. It was not clear what kind of vehicle they were operating.

Sean Parnell, a spokesman for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, could not be reached for comment. Neither could authorities in Doña Ana County.

Joint Task Force Southern Border, which oversees the military’s border mission from Fort Huachuca in Arizona, said in its statement that the identities of the deceased service members were being withheld until their families were notified.

The accident occurred as thousands of active-duty U.S. troops fan out from the Pacific Ocean to Texas as Trump seeks to seal the southern border to illegal crossings. While the Marines have primarily been concentrated in California, those involved Tuesday were assigned on a reconnaissance mission, as the Defense Department seeks to improve its understanding of the region, one of the defense officials said. The Trump administration has signaled it intends to give the U.S. military an even larger role at the southern border.

On Monday, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum traveled to New Mexico to transfer control of about 110,000 acres of federally controlled land to the Defense Department, allowing the U.S. military to take a more active role aiding law enforcement responsible for detaining illegal crossers. The plan to do so was first reported by The Washington Post last month and approved by Trump last week, effectively turning a 60-foot-wide strip of land along the border, known as the Roosevelt Reservation, into a satellite military installation.

Hegseth has enthusiastically embraced Trump’s focus on the U.S.-Mexico frontier, saying that after years of combat deployments overseas, it is time for the United States to protect its own boundaries. In February, he posted on social media that the administration is “dead serious about 100% OPERATIONAL CONTROL of the southern border.”

I work nearby. People that saw the accident said that they tried to pass a semi on a two way road and there was an oncoming vehicle, they swerved to avoid colliding head on and drove off the road into a ditch.

The more people and equipment you put in motion the more likely accidents like this are to occur, but I doubt it will convince even the most flag-happy troop defender type to want to end the mission.

[–] Z_Poster365@hexbear.net 8 points 10 months ago

Look they knew what they signed up for. Driving an overpriced piece of shit into a ditch. They just thought it would be their mustangs

[–] refolde@hexbear.net 15 points 10 months ago
