/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ **8. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Raining all day today, I just had the long walk into work and "Trust me, there's no word for 'crisp' on Ferenginar." comes into my head. What is one of your favorites?

“It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness... that is life.”

[–] popekingjoe@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah this quote has gotten me through some bad times, as silly as that might seem.

[–] OccamsTeapot@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Not silly at all. It's a great quote and an important lesson for life

[–] thessnake03@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

I pulled that out at work, and totally forgot it was star trek

[–] davidgro@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

I love this quote and think it's hilarious that it was said in response to Data moping about losing a video game.

[–] Mwallerby@startrek.website 64 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Bashir: "They broke seven of your transverse ribs and fractured your clavicle."

Garak: "Ah, but I got off several cutting remarks which, no doubt, did serious damage to their egos."

[–] negativenull@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

This is a good choice!

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 46 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Two, are they're not surprisingly both from Garak:

Garak: The truth is usually just an excuse for lack of imagination.

Odo: You'd shoot a man in the back?

Garak: Well, it's the safest way, isn't it?

[–] negativenull@lemmy.world 36 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Garak has so many great quotes:

Garak: Treason, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

Garak: I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences.

Garak: Paranoid is what they call people who imagine threats against their life. I have threats against my life.

[–] goosehorse@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

ZIYAL: Why don't you just let Garak design a dress on his own? You know whatever he comes up with will be beautiful.

GARAK: My dear, I find your blind adoration both flattering and disturbing, but she does have a point.

[–] Zerlyna@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Garak wound up being one of my favorite characters!!

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 41 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The scene where Quark compares the federation to root beer with Garak.

Q: "I want you to try something for me. Take a sip of this. It's called root beer. What do you think?"

G: "Oh! It's vile!"

Q: "I know. It's so bubbly, and cloying, and happy."

G: "Like the Federation..."

Q: "But you know what's really frightening? If you drink enough of it, you begin to like it. Like the Federation..."

G: "Insidious!"

[–] wizzor@sopuli.xyz 10 points 1 month ago

I think you have the last lines wrong

It's insidious!

...just like the Federation

With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably.

Fuckin A right, buddy!

Starfleet was founded to seek out new life – well, there it sits! ...waiting.

Lying is a skill like any other, and if you want to maintain a level of excellence you have to practice constantly.

"Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra! Temba, his arms wide. Shaka, when the walls fell."

Those lines for some reason resonate with me. That episode highlighted a divide I didn't know existed between myself and others.

I can't be any more clear about what I'm saying to you. Please understand so we can work on this problem together!

Ode to Spot is pretty classic.

"... and no one ever offered him a command. He learned to play it safe, and he never, ever, got noticed by anyone"

This line has been the basis of several career changing events for me, and overall it's worked out pretty well

One I quote often:

"What do I do?"

"FIND HIM AND KILL HIM"

Sisko:

Do you know what the trouble is? The trouble is Earth-on Earth there is no poverty, no crime, no war. You look out the window of Starfleet Headquarters and you see paradise. It's easy to be a saint in paradise, but the Maquis do not live in paradise. Out there in the demilitarized zone all the problems haven't been solved yet. Out there, there are no saints, just people-angry, scared, determined people who are going to do whatever it takes to survive, whether it meets with Federation approval or not.

And one from Quark:

Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They're a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don't believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.

TNG of course, S04E11, Data's Day

Riker: "Some days you get the bear, and some days the bear gets you.*"

I remember it with 'sometimes' instread of 'some days' and somehow it deeply resonates with me.

Capt. Picard:

The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth, whether it's scientific truth or historical truth or personal truth! It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based. And if you can't find it within yourself to stand up and tell the truth about what happened, you don't deserve to wear that uniform!

—TNG, The First Duty

Every one of us has a thousand different kinds of little people inside of us, and some of them want to get out and be wild, and some want to be sad or happy or inventive, or even just go dancing! That's why we all have so many different urges at different times. And all those different little people inside of us: we must never be afraid to take them with us wherever we go. Who knows when we may need one of them to pop up and rescue us from ourselves! Variety, my dear Alex. The great secret is not the variety of life, it's the variety of us.

So many great lines to choose from. I’m watching Our Man Bashir right now and these stand out:

Garak: Kiss the girl, get the key. They never taught me that in the Obsidian Order.

A little later in the episode…

Bashir shoots at Garak grazing his neck.

Garak: Doctor, that was awfully close! What if you’d killed me?

Bashir: What makes you think I wasn’t trying?

Garak: Doctor, I do believe there’s hope for you yet.

Bashir: Ah, I’m so relieved. Now we have to get to the control room. Are you coming or not?

Garak: Well, who am I to question Julian Bashir, secret agent? Lead on!
