Very different when put in context, or at least I hope brow

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 101 points 1 week ago

It does sound a little like a Nick Mullen moment but that's definitely not what he meant lol. I'm not Venezuelan, but I'm a Spanish speaker from latam and I've almost never heard anyone use "homo" to mean gay by itself. He was just using it in the taxonomical sense. Not to mention that Maduro is pretty pro-LGBTQ and has wanted to push a more inclusive line in Venezuela but has, if anything, been held back by the rest of the party.

Ah, phew! Good to hear! heart-sickle

[-] EllenKelly@hexbear.net 17 points 1 week ago

A bit this I think Homo Sovieticus?

Homo Sovieticus (cod Latin for 'Soviet Man') is a pejorative term coined to describe the average conformist individual in the Soviet Union and other Eastern Bloc countries.

I can hear Brace Belden's voice saying this

[-] Speaker@hexbear.net 51 points 1 week ago

Rachel Jake vs. The Homo Nazi would be a pretty cool gumshoe novel.

How are people trying to cancel him here for saying this? This is funny

There was a long and huge campaign promoted by George Bush and Obama against Venezuela and Chávez using LGBTQ+ groups and NGOs. I don't believe Chávez was homophobic, but he simply didn't do much to help or improve the situation of LGBTQ+ people, and the abuses of the police and some of the more reactionary and conservative Chavista politicians continued with homophobic policies.

Then, when Maduro was elected, things changed for the better. Maduro, personally, is pro-LGBTQ+ and started pushing for more LGBTQ+ policies within the PSUV. A few days before Guaido's attempted legislative coup, Maduro met with LGBTQ+ groups and promised to promote same-sex marriage, adoption and the protection of LGBTQ+ people. But then Guaido fucked up and the attempt to reform the constitution was suspended due to the political instability at the time. And as soon as Maduro accepted LGBTQ+ people into government, the US stopped sending funding to NGOs.

Apparently, some bad-faithers are miscontruing as an antisemitic insult, due to Milei self-describling himself of allegedly being of Jewish descent...

How "Homo Nazi" doesn't refer to his economic, foreign and cultural policy, let alone image, IDK...

[-] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 47 points 1 week ago

cant even call a pro-genocide crakkker a hitlerite anymore because of woke

[-] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 60 points 1 week ago

Almost no one uses homo as a slur in spanish or portuguese, in this case Homo literally just comes from Homo Sapiens. Some people (Gusanos who mostly are racist and LGBTQphobic themselfs) claim that Maduro called Milei a homophobic slur recently, but he just called Milei a Pendejo, Asqueroso, Neonazi and Sociopath.

[-] Esoteir@hexbear.net 46 points 1 week ago

pooh-wtf title is a little clickbaity

[-] autismdragon@hexbear.net 27 points 1 week ago

I literally didnt even realize that when I wrote it plus like, the actual information is right there in the screenshot so the fact that people took it as as Maduro calling him gay came as a complete shock to me because I only thought of the scientific term.

[-] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

waow-based

Reminds me of when Kojima decided to call the weird evil guys in Death Stranding Homo Demons (technically Demens but... come on)

[-] Roonerino@hexbear.net 18 points 1 week ago

Isn't there a guy named Die Hard Man or something in that game too?

[-] RION@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago
[-] someone@hexbear.net 22 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It was well intentioned, and I think most people reading his comment in context will probably be OK with it. But I think it's also one of those things that may be linguistically clever and technically not a slur but also just massively unwise. Like referring to a politician known for their spending cuts as "removedrdly". There's just better synonyms out there that aren't going to cause a media shitstorm.

Update, I hadn't realized that would be filtered out here. In any case I'm referring to a synonym of miserly. Just look at the list of synonyms for the obvious problem one.

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 57 points 1 week ago

I don't mean to shield him from all criticism, and seeing as I'm cishet I'm sure it could be my own blind spot, but I seriously doubt that he was trying to do some kind of homophobic wordplay. We almost never use "homo" by itself to talk about gay people in Spanish. Maduro is relatively pro-LGBTQ and has historically been to the left of his party and the country as a whole on queer issues. I think there's a bit of danger in mapping English connotations of latin words to the same latin words being used in another language, because the connotations really aren't the same.

[-] Aru@lemmygrad.ml 57 points 1 week ago

He's a Spanish speaker, should he also watch out when he says "black" because it's a bad word in English?

[-] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 23 points 1 week ago

If Maduro was a politician from Alabama, I would understand your criticism

[-] Chronicon@hexbear.net 22 points 1 week ago

foiled by the slur filter! good job slur filter

[-] commiewithoutorgans@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Proud of our strong filter. It's the strongest filter, isn't it?

But I also have no idea what word that was. It feels weird to be thinking so hard about it but "...rdly" just gets me. I have no idea what word could come before that and be a slur

I guess my slur-dar is not very good

[-] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

N-word, ending with a. I don't think the two words are actually related, but the -rdly form is so archaic it's only used by people who want to say the slur part.

[-] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

It predates the slur from an unrelated etymology, but it's primary use in the year of our Lord 2024 is to avoid slur filters with """plausible""" deniability. Not that online platforms regularly police these things.

[-] Aradina@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 week ago

Intelligence is knowing what that word is and what it means.

Wisdom is never ever using it.

[-] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

What's that meme that's like "I learned fluent French so instead of being someone unable to speak French, I became someone unwilling to speak French"
