E. What's a Himalayan salt lamp and have I ever licked one?

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 46 points 5 days ago (2 children)

One of these bois:

I don’t know if you’ve ever licked one, but I sure have.

[–] DashboTreeFrog@discuss.online 24 points 5 days ago (7 children)

And what's the experience like? One of the higher ups at my workplace has one in their office and I need to know if the risk is worth the reward

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 46 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You don't know what you're missing.

[–] DespairSquid@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 4 days ago

I’ve licked salt licks. I grew up around farm/farm-adjacent animals, and I’ve always been very curious, so I’ve tried a lot of things my animals consume..

The flavored salt licks are fun. I genuinely understand why they like them. Especially of their diet is deficient. Bet they taste like magic if your diet isn’t just full of salt already.

For some reason that probably has to do with surface area, granulated salt tastes much much saltier than salt licks. So I’m not joking about them tasting nice, it’s a totally different thing to table salt.

Boss makes a dollar, you make a dime. Lick that salt on company time!

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago

Probably not, but it’s admittedly odd to verify that a home furnishing is obviously also a lump of seasoning.

[–] Viceversa@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

Do that while holding eye contact with said higher up

[–] Beangut@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

It's pretty salty but I think it's worth the risk.

Would recommend finding a spot to gradually erode away with repeated licking

Salt with a potential of dustiness (the latter all depends on the lamp).

[–] gray@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Is it safe, like is it just rock salt?

[–] kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz 3 points 4 days ago

It is just rock salt. And possibly dust gathered on top of it.

[–] wanderingwizard@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

As safe as any other form of salt. If you consume enough of it then it could raise your blood pressure

[–] Sabata11792@ani.social 1 points 4 days ago

IDK, tasted like salt.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's literally a giant salt crystal with a light bulb in. I have no idea what it's supposed to do, or why it's got to be Himalayan.

[–] Hazel@piefed.blahaj.zone 28 points 4 days ago (4 children)

It's pink, which is a pretty and uncommon color for salt from other places.

It's Himalayan and therefore oriental.

It's a crystal, but cheap (cause it's salt).

Some weirdos think crystals have beneficial magic properties just from being in their vicinity.

Combine those and you have the perfect mass-market object for white people to become obsessed with.

[–] VieuxQueb@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 days ago

And it can be problematic on a few levels, for one it is toxic to cats and some of them want to lick it, it can also collect humidity from the air and drip it over your desk and power cords (hmm, spicy salty water).

[–] daggermoon@piefed.world 4 points 4 days ago

I concur. I am white and i'm obsessed with Himalayan salt lamps.

[–] AdamBomb@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Also, they give a nice soft warm glow when lit from within

[–] kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz 2 points 4 days ago

This is why I have one! It is incredibly beautiful, with its soft orange glow, when lit up. The winter is long and dark here, and I need all sorts of beautiful lights to look at.

I do love pink things
