Machu Picchu is an Inca settlement located in the High Andes of Peru in the Urubamba Valley, north of Cuzco. The site, perched high above the Urubamba river, has been variously described as a fortress, imperial retreat and ceremonial precinct. It was founded by Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui in c. 1450 CE, had capacity for around 1,000 residents at its peak, and ranked amongst the most sacred of all sites for the Inca. Following the collapse of the Inca empire, Machu Picchu was abandoned and forgotten, only to be rediscovered in 1911 CE by the explorer Hiram Bingham. Machu Picchu is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Purpose

Machu Picchu (meaning 'old hill') was an imperial estate founded by and belonging to Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui, the Inca ruler, in the mid-15th century CE. The ownership of the site was later passed to Pachacuti's successors. On its rediscovery by the explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911 CE (although local residents in the valley had always known of the site's existence) it was claimed as the last capital of the Incas. However, this proved to be untrue when the actual final capital was discovered at Vilcabamba, further downstream in the Urubamba Valley.

Another hypothesis concerning the site posed by early historians was that Machu Picchu was a fortress and the strong walls, large towers, and dry moats were cited in support of this theory. The need for fortification perhaps sprang from a series of severe droughts which made the competition for resources fierce. This would also explain why the site was not occupied for very long as when the water situation improved the necessity for such citadel sites declined.

Once again though, further study has revealed that most of the architecture was designed for religious purposes and the fortifications may well have been put in place to ensure only a select few could enter this sacred site. In further support of this interpretation, a road was discovered which linked the site to several residential settlements dotted along the valley. The most likely purpose of Machu Picchu, then, was as a sacred site, probably to the sun god Inti and with the additional purpose of reminding the recently conquered local population of the power and might of Pachacuti and the Inca empire centred at its capital Cuzco.

The site was abandoned by the Inca shortly before Pizarro and the Spanish conquistadors arrived. The invaders never reached Machu Picchu, though, and the site would remain unknown to the wider world for 400 years.

cooling a bit on the Odyssey after seeing itI find it extremely annoying that despite being set in mycenaean greece, the movie depicts odysseus as extremely calvinist. the original poem is horny as hell, with our hero taking a break to spend an entire year banging a hot sorceress, while in this one the only sex scene is one where he has missionary sex with his wife and he seemingly spends the following 18 years completely celibate.

granted, it would have been annoying in a different way if Nolan had just had all of the female characters throwing themselves at odysseus, which is how this aspect of the story is depicted in pretty much every other movie adaptation, but I guess what bothers me about it is that rather than make the story element more interesting by giving more agency to female characters, the modern liberal filmmaker's response to feminist critiques of the films of the past is to simply excise sex altogether.

it's the general pattern with filmmakers like Nolan. he'll put lupita nyong'o as clytemnestra/helen, but he won't change the fact that those characters are depicted strictly as objects who are acted upon by men. the right winger's feral opposition to minority representation is the mirror image of the liberal's surface level inclusion of it, with both of them fundamentally missing the point in different ways.

that said i do like the plot thread that odysseus is reckoning with how his plot at troy was a terrible idea with long reaching consequences. the very first thing we see odysseus and his crew do after the war is burn down a village for the crime of running away when a bunch of heavily armed strangers arrived on their beach, and by the end of the film odysseus realizes that the "people from the sea" are more or less blowback from the trojan war. that's a cool way to adapt an old story to a modern framework.

it is unfortunately super idealistic. oddysseus' plan seemingly introduced the idea of violating xenia to the mycenaeans, and this idea's very existence spells the end for mycenaean civilization. the result is that the film positions the sack of Troy as bad because the greeks did it the wrong way, rather than being bad because murdering tons of people is bad. it's both the liberal and fascist critique of the war on terror, incidentally - libs think we just needed more precise munitions, while fascists think that we just needed more indiscreet bombing campaigns, and neither can engage with the fact that we shouldn't have been invading another country in the first place.

So im already working towards getting a tiny lil Compton hat and making a lil pair of sunglasses so I can turn my EZ8 Gundam into an EZ-E Gundam. I'm considering seeing if I can get an HG Quebley and make the Queeberly...not exactly sure quite how to pull it off and it might be too esoteric to decorate my house with where real people visit.

[–] Enjoyer_of_Games@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago

If anyone else missed it; Erika3sis made this anime with a very newgrounds like aesthetic.

I'm not sure if I fully get it tbh but the passion is absolutely infectious. Really feeling that web 1.0 energy of seeing someone else make something making me want to make something.

Minds been brimming with ideas since. I think I've arrived at something where I could get a lot out of recycling relatively few frames of animation. It's the thinnest veneer of a story based on a meme but you gotta start somewhere right?

Fr. A lot of bad calls were made with Korra but the older cast was obviously the right move. They cant just do another coming of age story in the same setting and have it hit as hard as Airbender did.

The Channel Five Fuentes interview just pisses me off. You can't let this guy speak without somebody present who knows his bullshit.

The Piers Morgan interview where he says "yeah there's six million and they're finding more every day" is apparently the world's most effective dog whistle because no liberal can even imagine he could possibly be joking about that.

I watched 5 minutes because YouTube was shoving it down my throat.

muslims are more dangerous than christians

This is reddit atheism's fault, isn't it? I fuckin hate people like this. Was quite humbled to see even people on Tumblr call this out for the obvious islamophobia bait that it is, but I guess stormfront is the other side of that coin.

My main project at work is with an elderly dev who is absolutely atrocious.

Everything he touches is just…. His code is so bad.

And I don’t just mean “he isn’t familiar with the latest framework” bad, I mean it’s bad.

He doesn’t understand eventual consistency, dependency injection, what the fuck is a domain?, our ports and adapters pattern has ports defined that are explicitly tied to specific infra…

It’s all bad. It’s a bucket of shit.

Touching his code is always a week of Lovecraftian horror, beginning with a “I’ll refactor this” to “fuck it, I’ll just bolt this” followed by “dear fucking god dear fucking god how does anything work”

Anyway I don’t want him to get fired because (1) that’s not my problem, in the long term, and (2) why not let the guy cook on the corporate dime?

But I need to get away from the guy.

got banned from a home depot because a manager didn't like that i didn't "check in" with him before doing my job (taking a bunch of pictures of their kiosks along the front wall + testing electrical outlets)

it's like brother I know from experience that if I take the time to do that a fifteen minute job will get turned into an hour long job and that's cutting my rate into a quarter which is un-fucking-acceptable. you got an email saying I was coming, I know you got that email because I was CC'd on it, so you saying you had no idea I was coming is BS, check your front of house hot sheet.

also I have no respect for you. you're a manager, get a real job.

weird yapping

The 4chan-adjacent wojak guys on youtube annoy me so much. Brave take I know.

It seems like their job is to gesture broadly at things white guys in the imperial core might struggle with daily, depression or inability to make your own food, and then basically jump immediately to blaming "the jews" or whatever. Like apparently all of the suicidal depression [citation needed] is from overprescription of SSRIs [citation needed] that "burn out your neural pathways". [Citation needed] Mostly they aren't even that brave though, and leave whatever problem's cause extremely open to interpretation. The average wageslave can't make their own food at home, this fuckin wojak-avatar loser posits, because they don't have time due to wageslaving, or because they're lazy. What a fucking loser.

Maybe it's a literal CIA plot to create an ample stock of lone wolves they can use for whatever purpose, but it really bugs me how the dude just skips even the possibility of asking "why" to any potential problem his viewer may have. It's because of soy in the food, or because of weed, or because "porn addiction took my life away" seriously who watches this? Is /r9k/ leaking? But there's no structural analysis and there couldn't be. Things just happen, says the wojak-avatar, and he stops short of loudly chanting "reclaim your birthright, white man!" but the statement hangs implied in the silence.

I'm sayin' that I hate the guts of these 4channel irony poisoned fucks. Yes I'm doing very well today and everything is Normal

catgirl-happy
