Oddly homophobes are the loudest group when it comes to anything related to gays. They're the main reason i know who in my social group is gay, they're the main reason i know we had gay parades precovid. They're the only reason i know we have at least one gay club in our city.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 2 points 17 hours ago

Those who screech and fearmonger about a person or thing cause much more visibility of that person or thing than anything else. AOC, for example, was better-known to conservatives than to anyone else in polls because of how much she was demonized by them. Don't know if that's still true.

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 2 points 17 hours ago

Not homophobes helping visibility. 💀

there are obviously gop members that are in sham relationships and are closeted. like My LINDSEY, and then madison cawthorne started saying they all have orgies.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

Only semi-related, but I worked for a representative who once quipped that there was no better proof that "the clothes make the man" than the congressional members' locker room.

There's a reason why Grindr servers overload when there's a Republican convention in town.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And see.....here's the thing. If they were just gay? That'd be fine. What I take offense to is the fact that they condemn anyone not within their inner circle for being gay.

It's like they want to paint this picture of what they want america to be. And in this picture it's essentially the town from the andy griffith show. Except they also want a little secret gay sex. But anyone ELSE that has gay sex is to be punished! WHILE THEY DO THE EXACT SAME SHIT THEY PUNISH OTHERS FOR!!!

Like the secret is some shamable offense. It's not though. So you took it in the ass last night from a dude. So what? As long as you're both ok with it, then I see no issue. Yet they want to act like nobody else is allowed to do that.

[–] ThrowawayPermanente@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They think everyone else is like them and has to be shamed or coerced into having babies

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean....to be fair, I have no children, and I won't have children.

You know....on account of how this whole world is a dumpster fire? I refuse to subject a new life to this suffering.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

Shame certainly won't get me to make ANY children.

Luckily there's women around with pre-made chilren so I don't have to do any of the hard work.

(Half-joking, adoption/single moms are more ethical. Or dads, whatever you prefer).

[–] Avicenna@programming.dev 6 points 1 day ago

same goes for conservative politicians, sexual abuse of minors and civil pedophiles I guess.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 1 day ago

CLOSETED GAY people have ton of gay sex, then they stop or go into a sham marriage. porn sites have categories for "gay nazis, conservatives"

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 9 points 1 day ago

“I was just helping him pray the gay away!”

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Homophobia is, in about 90% of the cases, caused by projection of self-hatred, or resentment of the fact that others are allowed to be openly gay without repercussions, while the person in question is stuck having to pretend they're straight.

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

in about 90% of the cases

And other complete bullshit statistics I ripped out of thin air.

If you think even close to 90% of homophobes – or fuck it, 90% of cases if you think the countable closet gay instances are vastly unevenly distributed among a tiny 1% – are doing it because they're secretly aching for gay sex/romance, you're out of your fucking mind and need to take that shit back to high school psychology.

Just like 90% of racists don't secretly wish they were another race or 90% of transphobes aren't closet trans, this is egregiously wrong and nonsensical.

[–] guillem@aussie.zone 13 points 1 day ago

Making homophobia a "problem of the gays themselves" has been a common trope for decades. It's very comforting because it kind of absolves heteropatriarchal society.

Of course don't you dare to delve into WHY do some gay people have internalised homophobia.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Nope, I was 100% religious. With some philosophy, and Nihilism, I became fairly non-homophobic.

I now use "if you are homophobic, you are secretly gay" to scare religious people from being homophobic.

EDIT: Actually, it was cultural. I was still religious when I started practicing your soul, your problem. To reconcile being left with being religious, I would just "preach" how being gay would send you to hell, and then like literally hold nothing against them after, I did my "duty".

[–] funkajunk@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Save some gay sex for the rest of us

[–] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Gex was a fun game. So sassy

[–] Tempus_Fugit@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Shame wielded in the wrong way can drive some evil.

[–] Best_Jeanist@discuss.online 1 points 1 day ago

This is outrageous, it's unfair! How can you be looking for cock on grindr and not be gay?

Anecdote, I was once dragged by family into a right wing conservative religious event, spent in on Grindr luring homophobic gays to random people.

[–] DerisionConsulting@lemmy.ca -1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (2 children)

Making the claim that homophobes are all secretly gay downplays the harm they cause. It ~~turns~~ reframes it into "in-fighting" instead of a minority being oppressed/attacked.

Some politicians will be self-hating queer people who are weaponizing hate, but others will just be hateful straight people.

[–] Peruvian_Skies@sh.itjust.works 1 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

It doesn't. It shifts the conversation from people to ideas. If those politicians are actually in the closet, then it's not about straight vs queer but about hateful vs accepting. Which is a much more realistic framework that also encompasses conservative hate for women, racial minorities, immigrants, other religions, and counterculture elements, all in one neat package. It stops looking like sexeral different battles and starts looking like what it is: a single organized campaign against humanity by people infected with hateful ideas.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

i dont see how it causes more harm, or infighting against gay people. it exposes thier hyprocisy of gay politicians. if you were gay you would know which people are the ones actually harming. there are plenty of evidence that homophobic people are gay themselves.

Bizarre its only ever straight people that are obssesed with not claiming homophobics are gay, they are the ones doing the most harm through denial that Homphobic people are remotely not gay.

[–] DerisionConsulting@lemmy.ca 1 points 19 hours ago

Maybe my wording could use some work; It didn't mean that it would cause in-fighting, I meant that it reframes the homophobia as gay in-fighting.

A twenty-ish video that might explain things better, if you are up for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr_g_64oS9Q

The last three minutes are the summary.

Also, I am gay.

[–] Yliaster@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Gay man here, yet to see any real evidence that being homophobic means you're gay. Anecdotal accounts will be found, but that's not compelling.
