Julius Nyerere, born on this day in 1922, was a socialist and anti-colonial Tanzanian politician who promoted a Pan-Africanist ideology known as Ujamaa, which means "extended family" or "brotherhood" in Swahili.

Julius Kambarage Nyerere was born on April 13, 1922 in Butiama, on the eastern shore of lake Victoria in north west Tanganyika. His father was the chief of the small Zanaki tribe. He was 12 before he started school (he had to walk 26 miles to Musoma to do so). Later, he transferred for his secondary education to the Tabora Government Secondary School. His intelligence was quickly recognized by the Roman Catholic fathers who taught him. He went on, with their help, to train as a teacher at Makerere University in Kampala (Uganda). On gaining his Certificate, he taught for three years and then went on a government scholarship to study history and political economy for his Master of Arts at the University of Edinburgh (he was the first Tanzanian to study at a British university and only the second to gain a university degree outside Africa. In Edinburgh, partly through his encounter with Fabian thinking, Nyerere began to develop his particular vision of connecting socialism with African communal living.

On his return to Tanganyika, Nyerere was forced by the colonial authorities to make a choice between his political activities and his teaching. He was reported as saying that he was a schoolmaster by choice and a politician by accident. Working to bring a number of different nationalist factions into one grouping he achieved this in 1954 with the formation of TANU (the Tanganyika African National Union). He became President of the Union (a post he held until 1977), entered the Legislative Council in 1958 and became chief minister in 1960. A year later Tanganyika was granted internal self-government and Nyerere became premier. Full independence came in December 1961.

In 1962, Nyerere was elected the first president of Tanganyika, a predecessor to modern Tanzania and a newly independent republic. His administration emphasized decolonizing society and the state, also unsuccessfully pursuing a Pan-Africanist East African Federation with Uganda and Kenya.

In 1967, Nyerere issued the "Arusha Declaration", forbidding government leaders from owning shares or holding directorates in private companies, receiving more than one salary, or owning any houses that they rented to others. In compliance with this declaration, Nyerere sold his second home and his wife donated her poultry farm to a local co-operative.

Nyerere’s integrity, ability as a political orator and organizer, and readiness to work with different groupings was a significant factor in independence being achieved without bloodshed. In this he was helped by the co-operative attitude of the last British governor β€” Sir Richard Turnbull. In 1964, following a coup in Zanzibar (and an attempted coup in Tanganyika itself) Nyerere negotiated with the new leaders in Zanzibar and agreed to absorb them into the union government. The result was the creation of the Republic of Tanzania.

Nyerere's government also aided in liberation struggles elsewhere in Africa, training and aiding anti-apartheid South African groups and helping to depose Ugandan ruler Idi Amin. In 1985, Nyerere stepped down as President and was succeeded by Ali Hassan Mwinyi in a notably peaceful and stable transition of power.

"Unity will not make us rich, but it can make it difficult for Africa and the African peoples to be disregarded and humiliated."

Anime reviewers watch so much garbage that when they see an ok show they praise it to heaven, when you barely watch anime and go to see it you realize it's good by their sick and twisted standards.

Is it bad that I like when my girlfriend speaks for me sometimes? I don't always have the social energy to even ask for coffee at the local coffee shop, I want her to do it for me while I bury my face in her shoulder to avoid eye contact with strangers. I didn't get much sleep last night and I'm in a mode where I don't want to mask my autism at all and just want to be babied. Usually she doesn't speak for me, but she'll start doing it when I'm really socially drained and I find it very endearing and sweet

I can’t tell if people are just addicted to being β€œthis will all blow over soon” smuglords or if just carrying on is their alternative to one long sustained scream. Two years ago a massive forest fire 1000kM away caused the sky in my city to turn blood red at 2 in the afternoon and the air smelled like ash for a week. If that happened a thousand years ago they would have made a new chapter of the bible about it.

I replied to another comment that mentioned this yesterday, but I know there's lots of nl-smug fans here. So I thought it was worth reposting.

The company that Dan Gheeling's mom works for and who are organizing the Northernlion cruise event is real bad. They primarily work with right-wing Christians and bigots. It's basically all their sponsors. They've got a Kevin Sorbo cruise coming up. They're Zionists and organize trips to Israeli settlements in occupied Palestine. It's so so bad.

I don't know how or why this didn't phase him or that he didn't think to look into it, beyond maybe just trusting Dan and his mom as a friend, but I think it's bad enough that signal boosting it could cause them to cancel the event entirely or find another organizer since it's a year away.

I emailed him and Kate at their business emails strongly urging them to do so.

cw: suicide, attempted murderSo my (apolitical/lib) friend is friends with a couple who are both cops. Yesterday she told me that the husband had died, she didn't know why but thought he might've gotten killed on the job.

Today she told me that it was actually an attempted murder-suicide that was only prevented because the wife hid behind a reinforced door, so the guy only got himself. Apparently she wanted to break up with him and he decided to take them both out.

My friend was obviously distraught by this so I only consoled her but ngl I kinda had to hold my tongue. She thought the dude died a heroic death fighting crime but nope, just another cop turned failed family annihilator. What a pathetic way to die. What is it about being a cop that makes you abuse your partner?

Today I planted strawberries, basil, corn, and squash in the garden. I assembled and placed the second to last planter box and filled the bottom bit with some branches; couldn't fill it with dirt cuz neighbor parked in the way.

Then I made a pot of pinto beans, a batch of salsa roja, and some mexican rice.

I did a stretching routine then a suspended hang from the pull up bar, then showered.

I feel pretty accomplished and tuckered out.

I'm excited about my bean + corn + squash ("three sisters") planter box, this is my third and best attempt at it. I gave the beans a 3 week head start and they're just sprouting this week, so I planted corn and squash which are heat lovers and it's been a warm early spring.

I'm excited about my tomato + garlic + basil + onion + peas planter box. The garlic and peas are growing great; one tomato seedling survived the late spring frost so it should be my first producer.

Another box has a bunch of onion seedlings and some peas (which apparently don't like being neighbors). It's the least interesting one besides...

The last box, empty, is waiting for summer crops - cucumbers, watermelons, maybe cabbage.

I installed drip line irrigation for this season and it makes watering so much easier. One twist of the faucet and it'll drip for 30 minutes into every box and 8 bags before auto shut off.

I've also got a bunch of bags with tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers. And a bag of blueberry

My upright boxes have baby kale and spinach that look great, with arugula and chive sprouting. Just added strawberries.

Looking forward to eating fresh peas in June πŸ«›

I'm working on a beard. Never had one before despite my overactive facial hair genetics. I'm surprised at how salt-and-peppery it is given how dark the rest of my hair is. I wish I could say it's just for honourable personal expression/fashion reasons, but the honest truth is that I just want to stop being mistaken for a young subby guy at the local gay bathhouses with my smooth-shaven youthful complexion. I want to signal that I expect and want to play the daddy role when cruising. I will report the results.

Then it occured to me that there might not actually be any popular isntrael vtubers to begin with

Been in a band for 10 years, and in the middle of March I hit my burnout point and walked out of a practice to just go home. This started a domino effect that lead to 2 of the 4 of us quitting, and we haven't gotten together since that night.

I don't listen to the kind of music we play anymore. I don't feel connected. I don't want to play shows. The last tour we did sucked shit and lead to me relapsing when I got home.

However, we do have stuff booked here and there, and I'm not gonna leave anyone hanging on that front. This Monday, we're all getting together to run a set, figure out transport for a few gigs this week, and just talk about the future. Have to tell the other person left "hey, I don't wanna do anything in May either." It's gonna suck and I've already caused a lot of disappointment, but I gotta put my well being first, and I've wanted a break for a long long time, but never had the courage to say anything about it.

That's kinda the thing about me, and something I focus on a lot in therapy - I keep stuff locked in, hide stuff from people, even lie sometimes to keep peace. I hate it when people are mad at me, worried about me, disappointed in me, pretty much anything negative directed at me. I don't handle it well, and it scares me to death.

Really not looking forwards to this week.

My brothers are big time Catholics and big time Trump fans, but with the recent shit going on and Trump just straight up calling the Pope a weak loser, I wonder whose side my brothers will choose. Will they choose their religious beliefs like they are supposed to, or will they give them up for Trump LMAO

(CW: mild reference to depression/self-harm) There was a table set up outside the grocery store for christians to convert people and I took one look at his sign and said, "No thanks, I'm not interested".

This guy starts hard selling me as I'm walking away literally saying, "If you're depressed or suicidal we have answers. We have ministers who can talk to you" lmfao I'm triggered. I wonder how his sign-up metrics are looking with that tactic. Literally the 4th guy this week that tried to convert me.

Under socialism, we will rip everything out of the browser and make it an actual fucking program.

Stop trying to make the browser a fucking app loader. We don't need all the Web* shit. Why is your website trying to communicate with a fucking serial thingy? Why do you need to use NFC through a website? Why are you trying to run VR shit through your browser? If you need to do that, make it a PROGRAM. AND NOT A FUCKING ELECTRON ""PROGRAM""

Roasted carrots with harissa, lemon/cumin sauteed kale, grilled eggplant with a fennel/chili/caraway rub and a drizzly lemon tahini sauce served on a bed of steamed kale, PLUS LEFTOVERS consisting of shiitake bao buns, a coconut mango rice pudding, and roasted cauliflower served chilled with a soy ginger dressing

Imagine being in the military and eating garbage when you could just be a student at the school i work at instead

I keep imagining a shitlib centrist who's only criticism of ICE is that they are using gasoline to drive around and kidnap immigrants.

Every single Canadian wrestler in AEW Dynasty in Vancouver has lost, including legends like Edge, Christian and Chris Jericho. In the battle royale they had Speedball, the only Canadian wrestler in that bout, very nearly tap out to a sharpshooter. Such an obvious reference to the Montreal Screwjob that the crowd was booing. Speedball didnt tap out but only because he was saved by his American team mate, who then won himself.

If Kenny Omega doesn’t win and they have every Canadian lose tonight I will be legitimately upset at my fake sports soap opera program.

Well, there goes a year and some change of sobriety. Relapsed on alcohol a couple of days ago and it was a complete fucking nightmare, everything that could go wrong went wrong. Being off my anti-psychotic has been a double edged sword, I generally feel much better mentally but I'm also a lot more impulsive, and I haven't learned to live with that yet. Got finessed out of a lot of money, fucked up my knee again so I'm back on crutches, and I blacked out in the middle of the day and came out of my blackout on a median in the middle of the city in a place I'd never been to before, with my phone dead. The only good thing is that a nice gay man saw me limping on the side of the road and took me home. All things considered, I'm glad it was a fucking nightmare, a good reminder of what I gave up
