“Asian. Black. Hispanic. White. Long ago, the four races lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the White Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four races, could stop them, but when the world needed them most, they vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, a White Girl named Ariana. And although her singing skills are great, she has a lot to learn before she's ready to save anyone. But I believe Ariana can save the world.”

This is top tier right here. High quality dank memes made fresh to order. I think the meme economy went bust, but I almost want to invest.

Can someone tell me the difference between Hispanic and White? I'm not American

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hispanic are like Spanish but poor.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I know that. You know that. Antonio Banderas knows that. But Americans are funny about race. They didn't count Italians as white. They didn't even count the Irish as white.

But a line gets drawn somewhere I guess, and without exception it gets drawn where the wealth disparities arise.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

Damn, are you a poet? You should be a poet.

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Hispanic people are from Hispanic countries, white people look white. This is literally as far as the distinction goes and is exactly why dividing people up based on skin color is useless.

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Yes it's confusing because "white" is a cultural category not a phenotype. Where I grew up the Hispanic people were the white people - all the rich Cubans who fled Castro, and people from Spain. You can be Hispanic & white, or black, or brown, it just means your grandparents spoke Spanish, basically. And it's so funny because it was the white people who brought the Spanish language to the americas in the first place.

It's not possible to understand racists with logic. Their ideas are illogical.

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

One of my coworkers commented on one of our difficult patients calling the weekend crew racist against them and how ridiculous it was because both the patient and the weekend nurses are black. I was like oh yeah no that's because the weekend nurses aren't black (being a cultural term for African-American), they're African. Emphasis on the not-born-American. That's different (to people who care about that sort of thing). Is it rational? Not even a little, but racism, despite the claims of phrenology et al, is about as far from rational as you can get.

[–] Darkmuch@lemmy.world 28 points 2 days ago (5 children)

The USA was mostly colonized by Germans, Irish, and English. So skin tones are usually much lighter.

Central and South America had a larger indigenous population, and the Spanish/Portuguese colonizers had a bit darker skin, with much more frequent inter racial relationships.

However, the region in question is fucking huge. Don’t expect Mexicans, Columbians, Argentinians to all look the same.

Really Hispanic is more of a cultural category for all things with Spanish Legacy.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

It gets massively more complicated the more granular you get.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of distinct people groups in Latin and South America.

Many of them can directly tie their lineage back to the Maya, Aztecs, etc, and those societies themselves were amalgamations of many different people groups.

There are a ridiculous number of variations of Spanish that have different vocabulary, pronounciations rules, as a result of merging with local languages in different ways.

I would imagine the same is the case with Brazil and Portuguese. I don't know any Portuguese, but I do know that I've heard Brazillians say they often have trouble understanding Portugal-Portuguese and visa versa.... and Brazil is fucking huge.

... 'Hispanic' is roughly the American equivalent of 'European'.

Oh, he's European, he's from Europe.

Oh, he's Hispanic, he's from south of the US.

Are proper Spaniards, people actually from Spain ... Hispanic?

Uh well... according the the US government, basically, maybe. Are they brown? If yes, Hispanic.

That is pretty much how it works.

https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/09/12/who-is-hispanic/

As with most race-based terms... it doesn't actually make barely any sense.

[–] fushuan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Are proper Spaniards, people actually from Spain ... Hispanic?

None that I know would consider that that term describes them, neither do I. And I'm from Spain, so I know quite a bit of Spaniards.

The word hispanic is used in "hispanohablante", which is a word to describe countries or communities that speak Spanish outside of Spain, naturally.

However, when talking about "hispanohablante" (spanish speaking) communities in Europe for example, the term doesn't distinguish between South Americans or Spaniards, so idk. It's just weird to think of us as Spanish speaking people, we are in Spain, of course we speak Spanish. Duh.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's honestly good to know that you as a Spanaird (and your fellows) don't identify as Hispanic.

Because I have had to work with data sets, in the US, with 'race' data, that has to be in compliance with US govt standards, and... yeah 'Hispanic' just doesn't make any sense, even when you go into the 'logic' of it.

In defense of those southern Spaniards, the US govt. can eat my white dick.

Oh I fully agree.

I've got a bit of Italian heritage, and... oh dear lord, you'll get a similar kind of nonsense happening with southern Italians / Sicillians... Italians in general weren't even considered 'white' untill... the 70s?

[–] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 3 points 19 hours ago

Italians in general weren’t even considered ‘white’ untill… the 70s?

Why does this just make me think of those tweets from when Luigi was arrested

we're finally on the verge of learning once and for all if Italians are White

And once he received terrorism charges

The final answer on "what are Italians" is apparently "middle eastern"

[–] fushuan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

In fact, the "white" race makes no fucking sense. The term is caucasian, and it includes people from all around Europe, the middle east and north Africa.

The "race" questionnaire has Egypt as "white", so following that logic anyone from Morocco or anywhere in Spain would also be "white". Just based on the questionnaire.

Dunno, weird. I still don't understand why anything besides country of origin needs to be registered, though.

Hispanic refers to a person with a mix of native American and Spanish heritage created when the Spaniards conquered Latin America.

White generally just refers to a caucasian-looking person.

[–] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Concisely? No.

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I forgave her when I realized she is a method actress. Whenever she becomes an entirely different person for a period of time, it's simply what she's always done. She's an artist, she lives & breathes & becomes whatever role she's currently in. She's not confused or having an identity crisis, she is doing what millions of girls would love to do if we had enough time & money & freedom to experiment so wildly with our appearance & identity.

Most kids have to muddle through public School being told that if we do everything we're told, then all our dreams will come true and we'll be successful. Only to discover long after graduation that it was all a lie, all we can do is get a job to eke out survival, our hopes & dreams never see the light of day.

Now imagine being Ariana grande, deciding at age four you want to be a singer dancer and actress and by the age of eight you're starring in the lead role of a local community theater play, and by age 13 you're on Broadway, and through your teenage years you're starring on an international cable tv show and then you become a pop star and the world can't get enough of you. Ariana casually mentioned once that she's literally a witch, and her brother has mentioned their family is into cannibalism, except for Ariana, because she's vegan, 🤔 so yeah there's a wild rabbit hole we could go down.

Please excuse my way-too-many-paragraphs in response to this lighthearted meme. I'm going through some stuff right now.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

could you maybe expand on pretty much every single sentence you wrote

I'd love to read it

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

And I just learned through more rabbit hole stuff that Ariana's mom is CEO of a company that makes gadgets for the Navy so Ariana was born into wealth, and wealth (+ talent + excitement about one's passion & art) certainly helped catapult Ariana to world goddess status. Plus apparently witchcraft maybe 🤷🏼‍♀️

Here are some fun links to expound on some things I said ☺️

https://youtu.be/ryFj0brcNEA

https://youtube.com/shorts/ypSvnEtZenE

https://youtu.be/daGi-lI3wiU

https://youtu.be/fMxjIyiso7U

The one where she says she's a literal witch, time stamp 27:13 https://youtu.be/dEp1T8GKWaI but you won't find it satisfying because she included no context and she did not explain anything. Her interview goes on for a total of 90 minutes and she never really says much of anything, non-stop talking without saying much of anything at all. you know how celebrities are.

Okay I'm tired now. it took me forever to find that timestamp, and I just worked a full day at work and have to work again all day tomorrow so 😴

Oh one more thing before I 😴, regarding being a method actress, one of her idols is Jim Carrey, he is a method actor too. That's all I've got but just observe her over the years in all of her projects, she is a method actress.

The cannibal quote from her brother, I'm sure you could find it as easily as I could, I'll find it next time, but it also reminds me she said once if she could have lunch with any person living or dead, she sweetly said "Jeffrey Dahmer."

[–] Kalothar@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

I can’t excuse it, in fact I need more information about this, let’s pick back up around the witch part and expand from there

[–] DandomRude@piefed.social 32 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Can someone explain this to me? I'm out of the loop when it comes to mainstream social media, and I suspect that's what this is about...

[–] violet08@lemmy.today 37 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

Ariana is infamous for blackfishing. When she played pretend as a black person it was profitable for her to be a "baddie" + rap/trap infused pop music was in (see a pic of her from 2018). When she was cast for Wicked she decided that to be taken seriously as a "prestige" actress she had to transition back to being a white person (see pics of her from 2025).

[–] PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Makes me uncomfortable looking at her. She needs to eat.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 36 points 2 days ago

Damn. Beginning to think race might be some kind of socio-economic construct used to mystify material conditions of the proletariat.

[–] exasperation@lemmy.dbzer0.com 39 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

no, she's a Starbucks blonde frappé with soy milk.

[–] DandomRude@piefed.social 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Thank you very much for the explanation :)

[–] violet08@lemmy.today 19 points 2 days ago (3 children)

if you wanna have a laugh watch this clip of her current (white) self interviewing her past (black) self: https://m.youtube.com/shorts/EgYlEC5UemE

the blackfishing is so blatant & it’s not just the appearance

2018 okay either a specific event I can find or intentionally darkened. These are from the met gala (may 2019) and the billboards women of music (December, 2018)

Do with this what you will

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

You can tell from the background that the lighting isn't as bright. It doesn't mean it was photoshopped and doesn't mean it was dishonest.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

She got a suntan. Americans are just so ridiculous for making such a big deal out of things like that.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

She did way more then just getting a tan.
