I love dogs. Have two rescue mutts, they're priceless. I've loved dogs my whole goddang life, I really think they've gotten the short end of the stick with their deal with humanity. they deserve our love and care.

unrelated to the pic but I gotta vent:

goddamn people: stop bringing your dog into the supermarket. yeah yeah you can claim it's an emotional support animal, I don't fucking care. It's a food store, and there are people there that don't want to interact with your dog, or clean up it's accidents, where they shop for FOOD.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk I guess.

My local grocery store now has big ass signs on the door saying no dogs unless they're actually real service animals like seeing eye dogs and that emotional support animals don't count. I think they must be actually enforcing it too because it's one of the few places I don't see people's fucking dogs running around. I love dogs, probably more than the average person, but they don't belong in most stores especially because the overlap between people bringing their dogs into stores and the people who actually train their dogs is pretty small.

A lot of people don't understand the difference between service dogs and ESAs, including store owners and employees.

The American with Disabilities Act does not include ESAs, and businesses in the US can prohibit them so long as there isn't a local or state law stating otherwise.

[–] Tower@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 days ago

Right, but the limitations around even asking about a service animal make it a risky endeavor, so shops often take the safer route and assume any dog is a Service Animal.

[–] i_love_FFT@jlai.lu 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

Emotional support animals wearing the official harness are actually real services animals that have been trained and such. They will behave.

One of my friend only carries the official harness (without usually using it) because of places like this that don't consider them to be "real"... Then she can put it on the dog and they can't complain.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's really smart of your friend, because most ESAs (in my experience) aren't actually trained to be a real service animal. I've interacted with so many "ESAs" that are just their regular pet that their anxiety won't let them leave them at home.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I have trained my dog to help settle my stress and anxiety in certain ways. He has his service dog vest that I never really use. He isn't currently certified as a Support Animal but I could very easily if I so choose. The only places he really comes with me is places that just allow animals in the store 365 days of the year (A national Hardware store in Canada, Canadian Tire, allows dogs at all times of the year).

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

the jerks are making her life harder then. people who masquerade their wheezing bulldog as 'emotional support' as it jumps on the people all over the store are simply being selfish.

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

It's also important to note that not every service animal is a seeing eye dog. There are lots of service animals for conditions that aren't easily apparent.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

yeah it really frustrates me that these people are making things harder for people with real service animals.

bring your dog to the lumberyard. bring your dog to the pet store. not the grocers.

We love dogs too in my household. I have four dogs, in addition to numerous other terrestrial and aquatic pets.

But unfortunately, much like other people can be the worst, other people's dogs can be the worst!

And for that matter I am the rare Lemmy user that also loves kids. I am the fun dad and uncle. other people's kids can also be the worst, lol.

People just need to pay attention to the world around them and how they affect others. That would be nice. (good luck, amirite?)

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

it would be nice. hell, it should be the minimum. but yeah...

After a long speech like that? Probably.

[–] veni_vedi_veni@lemmy.world 19 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'm starting to think that this guy had an experience.

[–] aphonefriend@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 4 days ago

"people often..." Sounds like more than an isolated incident. The herd must live near by.

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 34 points 4 days ago

Perfection.

They're geologists, they should know if the lampposts outside are anchored sufficiently.

[–] Sp00kyB00k@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Geologists are the ones that lick stones, civil engineers are the ones that understand lampposts and concrete.

You are right but the field is not too far off, geologists should know where to obtain info on street lamps' hellhound-proofness.

[–] Narauko@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

I'm sure they would if the city would stop fining and harassing them about the bore holes for core samples. The pencil pushers are always standing in the way of real science.

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 16 points 4 days ago

When my dog is a little hoarse I take him to the vet

[–] Bubs12@lemmy.cafe 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

How high is the sign?! Where is the canine/equine cutoff for these people?!

…just curious

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Anything over 42" - that's the top range for a Shetland pony

[–] Speiser0@feddit.org 6 points 3 days ago

That's 106.68 cm, for almost everyone else in the world.

[–] lohky@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

My mastiffs are angels but I'd never take them into a restaurant or store; I barely let strangers come close to us while where walking. They're pretty anxious and very protective. If someone fucks with the dogs and gets bit, they're either dead or losing a limb and my good boys aren't going to be held at fault for some dumbass' behavior.

[–] Tower@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 days ago

Interesting fact - As of 2011, actual horses* are allowed to be service animals.

*Certain ones, at least

Also no horses or dogs crossbred with M1A1 tanks

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

should read it, it's comedy gold.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 3 days ago

Fair enough. As a former owner of a public retail business, Ill bet this proprietor has a great relationship with his customers.

[–] 1984@lemmy.today -4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

I dont know, its just common sense to not bring animals into shops where they can destroy things.

Whats next, suing someone because the coffee was hot?

[–] SlippiHUD@lemmy.world 21 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

Jesus, the coffee was hot lawsuit was about 3rd degree burns an elderly woman in the passenger seat of a stopped car sustained requiring skin grafts. She sued after McDonalds refused to cover her medical bills, and discovery revealed that McDonalds recklessly kept thier coffee hotter than their competitors despite the known saftey risks because it bumped thier bottom line. They had recorded complaints from 100s of other injured customers.

She was awarded millions of dollars in punative damages by the jury. The number was based on one days sales of coffee by McDonalds.

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

She also never got all that money. The original judge reduced it then she settled for even less after McDonalds made it clear they would tie it up in endless appeals.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Her genitals ended up getting fused to her leg or something?

Adam Ruins Everything did a bit on it. And my god, I'd forgotten how genuinely horrifying that case was. That poor old woman.

[–] SlippiHUD@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

I dont remember that specific, but I do know she was prevented by an NDA from defending herself in the court of public opinion.

[–] oh_@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

Thank you! The amount of people bringing dogs into shops is annoying. Especially grocery stores, like leave them at home. The dog owners let them wander, touch food, items etc.
