Fuck you, Newsom. Eat shit. You’re not the caliber of politician we need or want, and you never were.

We must always vote for the progressives in local elections to prevent the Newsoms of the world from climbing the ladder

The most important thing to take out of this:

He knows it's bad for his inevitable presidential run he's been focusing on, but he has to do what his wealthy donors want so they keep donating.

If he manages a first term, he'll still do shit like this, because he needs his donors for term 2.

We need a legit grass roots candidate, because when they keep their donors happy, that's doing what's good for average Americans.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 56 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (5 children)

You've just described exactly why the Democratic party lost touch with normal people. They couldn't resist wealthy donors. Or so says Bernie Sanders all the goddammed time.

Y'all. Stop fucking fooling yourselves. Don't let others strongman our county into the ground by convincing you to gobble down whatever rancid dick a political party throws at you.

You want the Dems to win? People under 35 should primary every fucking member of Congress. Boomers did this to is, and they'll keep doing this to us. Fuck them.

Ah yes. The public servants who arent serving the public. Running for any public office should not be a money race. Its been that way for way too long.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 4 points 1 day ago

Campaign Finance Reform is the single issue from which ALL other issues flow. Manipulating campaign financing is what causes everything bad in government. All lobbying, all promises, are bought and paid for with "campaign donations." It is legal bribery, but bribery just the same.

Presidential Campaigns should be Federally funded, limited to 90-120 days, and tightly regulated in terms of appearances and speech. This is an audition and an interview process for the president of the country, and the process should filter for the very best and most qualified candidates, not the most outrageous. If someone lies, over promises, abuses the other candidates or anyone else, etc. they can, and will, be disqualified from running. It's not a right to run, it's a privilege, and that privilege can be rescinded for bad behavior.

[–] OshagHennessey@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If we keep worrying about keeping political donors happy, we'll never reform anything; that's the exact opposite of what they want and will do everything to stop it.

Once he gets in office it'll be, "we need something to campaign on next election" every time reform comes up. On his final term, he'll say, "if the party is going to earn votes for my successor, I need to play ball this term," then the cycle will repeat itself.

The lesson here is:

Stop electing neoliberals like Newsom

He also vetoed a bill that would have kept private equity out of primary care so keeping a primary care physician has been a nightmare in California ever since. He gave PG&E a pass for murdering over 800 people in paradise because they were neglecting maintenance for shareholder profits. PG&E hiked our rates 6 times this year with his cronies approval and they made record profits. He’s slimy and part of the problem. Don’t ever forget that these evil Nazi tech bros came out of California and were enabled by him in his political career every step of the way.

[–] KelvarCherry@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Don’t ever forget that these evil Nazi tech bros came out of California and were enabled by him in his political career every step of the way.

And this here is key. Every one of those Silicon Valley "techbro" sleazy rapists are where they are today because of corporate USAmerica. Silicon Valley empowered Trump and pushed Vance to be their VP. Silicon Valley is fully to blame platforming Project 2025 and the Heritage Foundation.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I mean really, it was Biden and the Clinton's doing the 96 telecom act...

They desperately needed something to point to that neoliberalism worked. Most people who supported neoliberalism did it because of:

  1. The dotcom boom helping the economy.

  2. The reduction in crime.

1 would have happened no matter what, but neoliberals took credit and said the only reason it happened was not taxing the wealthy.

2 also would have happened without their crime bill, the only effect was the same ever country saw a generation after banning leaded gas.

Neoliberalism has never worked, and it will never work. They just take credit for anything good that happens.

I am hoping we get good candidates to vote for over Newsom, both as governor and presidency. This man is corrupt, and bullies the poor.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

finally an issue the centrists can muster the energy to fight about.

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 60 points 2 days ago (1 children)

A ONE-TIME tax is still too much for them! Incredible. Meanwhile there are people who expect to discharge 5% of their money on a one-time expense such as needing chemotherapy, or paying their phone bills. Market gains would likely recoup the entire 5% for the billionaires after about 12-18 months. But even this is just unacceptable for them.

[–] evenglow@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

Rich people donate money all the time. They can handle another one.

[–] KelvarCherry@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

We can not let Gruesome Newsom win the Democratic primary. Even if you don't think there are going to be the 2026 midterms/2028 election: Register as a Democrat (or check here to see how you need to be registered to participate in your state's primaries) and vote for a progressive in the 2028 Democrat primaries.

Billionaire math

Average USA billionaire has about $7b in wealth.

2026 * 365 ‎ = 739,490

$7,000,000,000 / 739,490‎ = $9,465.98

You would need to make $9k per day, for 2026 years, to catch up to the average billionaire wealth right now.

It’s estimated in 2026 that it would cost $37b to end world hunger until 2030.

Also note that Musk, Bezos, and other extreme billionaires are up to 100x of the average here ($700b for Musk). Who is making $900k per day?

This is not natural, it’s not rational, and it’s completely bullshit. You can come up with whatever distraction you want (“wealth & income aren’t the same”), but we should be taxing every dollar above $1b at 99% or higher.

30 years * 365 day = 10,950

$1,000,000,000 / 10,950 ‎ = $91,324.20

I could easily live off of $91k per DAY for 30 YEARS.

If you put these numbers against a human time scale we can understand, I don’t see the argument for this level of wealth, especially not as people go hungry, without clothes or food, and children die.

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Shit, $91k is more than double what I make ANNUALLY, and I'm not starving by any means. These hoarding pieces of shit need to go.

[–] Fandangalo@lemmy.world 29 points 2 days ago (2 children)

For years, I’ve heard people say, “What? You want to outlaw wealth?”

This level of wealth? Yes. Tax it at 99% above 1bn.

You won the money game. Stop playing it. Help society.

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 2 days ago

My long standing belief is that if you hit $100M of wealth, you should get a nice fancy trophy that says "congratulations on winning capitalism", along with a 100% tax on all future income.

[–] AnchoriteMagus@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Hoarding wealth is a mental illness like any other addiction.

In interviews this week, Newsom cited billionaires who are shifting away from the state – such as Page and Brin, with whom he has longstanding relationships

Oh no not your personal connections! What ever will the career politician do when its his turn to rake in lobbyist money :( Please god dont let this man be the dem candidate in 28

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago (1 children)

As is already well known for most, USA only has 2 right wing parties, Democrats that are "normal" right wing. and Republicans that are extreme right wing, and has gone more and more insane over the past few decades.

There can be no doubt among normal reasonable people, that the wealth of the richest people in USA is insane now, and needs to be reigned in.

Of course an annual federal tax to achieve this would be preferable, but since that obviously isn't happening anytime soon, it is up to the states. No one needs to have $1 billion, no one even needs a tenth of that.
The rich are so sociopathic they believe they are entitled to this, and then they call people working 2 jobs entitled for wanting a living wage and healthcare!

It's disgusting that this has become normalized, it is not normal! It is sociopathic, and only a sociopathic society would allow this, and at the same time have extreme poverty. This is not about making an efficient economy, it's 100% about the sick entitlement of the rich.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

i would say UNIPARTY, they are both right wing, and often collude with each other to prevent any actual candidate from other side from turning agains the status quo. its basically like putin"s "opposition party/ opponent whom he allows from time to time.

Oh, he's still not the preordained nominee yet? Still has to prove to the party who his owners are?

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 6 points 2 days ago

Prove to his donors.

[–] OshagHennessey@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

The controlled opposition party won't meaningfully reform the corporatism that got us in this mess? No fucking shit.

Gavin is such a god damn chode motherfucker. Democrats are limp-dicked bitches that keep voting to allow themselves to be constantly be cucked by these corporate-fascist democrats, or allow Republicans to continue to convince them banning guns and remaining unarmed while asking politely will convince conservatives to stop being Christian fascists.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)
