Elon reminiscing of the days he wasn't fucking despised and hated by the entire world.

You can't go back Elon, you had it all and you fucked it up.

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 9 points 21 hours ago

All he had to do was not get addicted to Twitter. If he'd kept his terrible opinions to himself he could have quietly contributed to super pacs trying to steal candy from babies or whatever and people would have compartmentalized that from the other things he does like they do for most other rich people.

[–] Crucible@hexbear.net 72 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I mean, he's not wrong. Hollywood jerked off to him til like 2018, even when he was blatantly evil already the hollywood liberal writer bubble loved their teslas so he was just a quirky genius to them. Buying twitter was the thing that made him a bad guy in their minds, but it was working with Trump 2024 that was the actual nail in the coffin and even after that there were op eds about how he should be welcomed back to the 'good guys' after he had his one week fallout with Trump. Being rich means you get infinite second chances

star trek name dropped him in 2017 too
guy with no actual skills who just bought some companies is a genius visionary apparently lol

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 11 points 23 hours ago

Ok but that was Terran Lorca who said Musk was a visionary.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 42 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He could of retired from public life as a hero but he got too big for his bazinga britches and inserted himself into the gop machine and fucked around and torpedoed his image lmao

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 38 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Many such cases.

Musk specifically fired his PR firm around 2018, the time he made the ”pedo guy” tweet.

[–] supafuzz@hexbear.net 34 points 1 day ago

damn turns out those guys were very, very good

[–] kleeon@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago

musk also had a cameo in iron man 2

[–] ephemeral@hexbear.net 10 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

it's the other way around - Elon Musk was modeled after Tony Stark. not the real Elon but the fictional character of Musk created by his PR team

but yeah that movie was partly responsible for the public perception that billionaires are smart and cool and I resent it for that

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 3 points 9 hours ago

He swapped the alcohol for ketamine though

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 29 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I read a comic published from 1983 or so where tony stark was drunk and erratic. He absolutely isn't modeled after musk. He's got the charm of a wet box. Rdj's ironman precense is always felt for better or worse, musk has the charisma of a soggy loaf of bread

[–] wolfinthewoods@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Tony Stark was always a shit character, the only storyline that was good was Demon in a Bottle. It's amazing that a B-lister Marvel superhero got so famous.

I think I gave myself a dare. It was the height of the Cold War. The readers, the young readers, if there was one thing they hated, it was war, it was the military ... So I got a hero who represented that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist ... I thought it would be fun to take the kind of character that nobody would like, none of our readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make them like him ... And he became very popular.

—Stan Lee

[–] StarkWolf@hexbear.net 9 points 22 hours ago

The more I learn about Stan Lee, the more I hate him...

[–] mendiCAN@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

yeah uhh and i'm not a comic person but even i know he was created by Stan Lee long before Elon was a thing... like 70s 80s during Vietnam. am i missing something? is movie stark considered separate from comics stark? is this actually a good troll by Elon for once?

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 41 points 1 day ago (2 children)

i don’t remember the part where iron man hangs out with ghislaine maxwell

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago

The only reason Iron Man wasn't on Epstein's plane manifests was because he flew to the island himself

[–] anotherspinelessdem@lemmy.ml 30 points 1 day ago

Okay, so do you remember when Iron Man was in the mountains of Not-Afghanistan...

[–] Bob_Odenkirk@hexbear.net 42 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'd believe it. RDJ's Iron Man is an insufferable character, but I kinda assumed that was just RDJ.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I just watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and it was really good. That director knew exactly how to utilize him. RDJ is actually talented unlike Musk.

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

lol that movie rocks.
"I put only one bullet in there. There was like an 8% chance?"
"Who taught you math?!"

him and kilmer had incredible chemistry. it was a Shane Black joint (i watch all of his movies) and he has a preternatural talent for protagonist duos, their dialogue and characterization.

also, the move of having a real actor play a role of a character who can't act successfully bumbling his way into pretending to be an actor from a fluke happenstance was such a funny bit.

i gotta watch that shit again.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago

Lmao that was the exact scene I was thinking of when I wrote that. I had to pause it and go smoke a cigarette while processing it and then explain to my neighbor that I wasn't crying. I was literally in tears.

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago

No shit sherlock. It was incredibly obvious when watching the movies.

[–] jack@hexbear.net 28 points 1 day ago (5 children)

The first movie was filmed in 2007. Did anybody even know who he was then?

He did get a pathetic suck-off cameo in the third movie.

[–] ufcwthrowaway@hexbear.net 4 points 19 hours ago

Yeah, I'm ashamed to say I knew about him and thought he was cool in 2007

[–] GenXen@hexbear.net 9 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (1 children)

The book "Founders at Work" features an interview with Max Levchin in which he describes how Musk wanted to switch the PayPal infrastructure from Unix to Windows NT was published in 2008, and they didn't even feel it necessary to include his name, he's only alluded to as "the guy who ran X [who] became CEO".

[–] djsaskdja@reddthat.com 8 points 23 hours ago

Impressive that he was still an idiot all the way back in 2008.

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I found this article through Wikipedia that says they did tour SpaceX while filming the first movie: https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2015-elon-musk-spacex/ (warning: it's from 2015, so it still has Musk so-true shit)

I vaguely remember hearing about him in 2008 when the first Tesla Roadster was released. His cameo was in the second Iron Man, unless he was in the third one and I forgor.

[–] thefunkycomitatus@hexbear.net 26 points 1 day ago

They used Space X as the filming location for Hammer Industries in Iron Man 2. Which is it's own nugget because Musk is more of a Justin Hammer than Stark, depending on how much credit you want to give Stark as a character.

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago

Tesla was coming out with a cool electric car using a Lotus chassis back then (the original Tesla roadster) and the original SpaceX Falcon rocket was the first privately owned rocket to reach orbit, this was around 2008 I think so Musk was definitely making waves back then in nerdier circles.

[–] Tabitha@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago

In 2007 social media almost did not exist, Elon Musk most likely relied on PR companies until he started his complete loss of self control.

Specifically they modeled the parts where he's a drunk callous divorced guy

And The Blair Witch Project was based on a true story.

Yeah, they were probably partly based on the bullshit that most people believed about him at the time. Not sure why anyone cares.

if there were an actual comic character analog to musk who would it be? i dunno enough characters to play this game right but I'll start anyway: Adam James Susan from V for vendetta.

a'course elon only dreams of the power Susan had, i'm focused on their similar broken personalities, their love of fascism and the weird juxtaposition of hating so many with the obvious desire to be loved by all

[–] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Didn't they model him after the comics that were around before this jackoff?

[–] CarmineCatboy2@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago

the comics were modelled after him too

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago

Wonder what Iron Man is doing right now... timmy-pray

[–] IAMTHEMOB@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago

I bet he's speed balling on Cat traq and horse dewormer.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 2 points 19 hours ago

He's more like lex luthor. All the resources in the world and instead of doing good for the world? Trolls superman with 40 cakes

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago

Really want to know what his shirt says.
