Please note that NSFW/NSFL videos must be labeled as such or they will be deleted

Edit: also keep in mind that initial information in these situations can often be inaccurate. Trusted outlets have conflicting reports about whether a suspect has been detained.

Edit 2: the campus has officially stated they release the initial subject. Donald Trump has stated Charlie Kirk is dead.

Photo of the new alleged suspect:

This guy doesn't look like an expert marksman, but I guess looks can be deceiving.

Cartridges with "transgender and anti-fascist" writing on them were found.

Oh, were they? That's super convenient. Almost thoughtful of the shooter to leave that kind of evidence behind but evade capture.

A lot of people seem to be writing on gun cartridges these days. Kind of a new trend I guess?

Very confused how we ended up here, but started here:

[–] TempermentalAnomaly@lemmy.world 1 points 4 minutes ago

According to a preliminary internal report circulated inside the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, federal and local officials recovered ammunition with the rifle that appeared to be engraved with statements “expressing transgender and anti-fascist ideology.” But a senior law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the investigation cautioned that report had not been verified by A.T.F. analysts, did not match other summaries of the evidence, and might turn out to have been misread or misinterpreted. In fast-moving investigations, such status reports are not made public because they often contain a mixture of accurate and inaccurate information.

It's weird. Phones have like 50 megapixel sensors that can photograph the hairs on a fly's leg, yet somehow all the CCTV from anything like this is always "we think it's a person, probably".

  • source: Matt Walsh has a "guy inside the FBI". Effectively a "trust me bro" pseudo-fact.
[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 2 points 36 minutes ago

I trust Matt Walsh to make shit up to suit their bullshit agenda.

[–] Baked86@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

next they find the 'manifesto'

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 1 points 35 minutes ago

Which will be found on the alleged shooter with the same gun that was used to shoot Charlie Kirk.

[–] SuspiciousCatThing@pawb.social 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I feel a little afraid anytime I see a post trying to identify the alleged perpetrator, just since the Boston Bombing and reddit.

Not saying you've done so, just that it still worries me I guess.

[–] AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works 2 points 15 minutes ago* (last edited 11 minutes ago) (1 children)

The FBI released that photo.

I don't want to try and identify anybody. Actually highly suspicious of anything they say about this investigation now bc they've botched the shit out of this, and Trump is clearly already using this to spread propaganda against the left.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 2 points 7 minutes ago

At this point the entire FBI should basically be considered an extension of Trump's personal Gestapo. I would not in any way remotely trust anything they say. The agency, falling completely under the domain of Trump, is compromised.

[–] ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk 4 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

They left a note saying "this group made me do it, retaliate against them".

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

"I am an evil leftist, the government should crack down on all dissent immediately."

[–] ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk 4 points 59 minutes ago

"You'll never stop us! Hahaha! Not unless you declare martial law, institute an authoritarian crackdown, and proscribe the democratic party!"

[–] sanpedropeddler@sh.itjust.works 38 points 3 hours ago (4 children)

Its in moments like these that I really appreciate non corporate social media. Everywhere outside the fediverse all I see is people freaking out, acting like this is the first shooting to ever happen in the united states. Even supposed leftists are just like "I don't agree with the man but no one deserves to get killed over their beliefs".

They seem to have forgotten that people get killed over way dumber shit all the time. Personally I care about all the other shootings a lot more than this one. Especially the school shooting in Colorado that happened the same afternoon, which is being mostly ignored.

There are even lots of comments that condemn anyone making light of his death, or even just making comments about his politics. This dissent they condemn is almost nowhere to be found though, because algorithms bury it all straight to the bottom. The only opinion allowed to be seen is "I'm horrified look at me".

Coming back to a place where a real discussion can be had makes me realize just how important this project really is. We need more spaces that we truly own.

“I don’t agree with the man but no one deserves to get killed over their beliefs”

I don't believe it was deserved, but it wasn't surprising and I'm certainly not upset it happened. He lived by the gun and died by the gun.

[–] Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 53 minutes ago

All of these people have rapist mentalities. They deserve it

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

Even supposed leftists are just like “I don’t agree with the man but no one deserves to get killed over their beliefs”.

Because corporate social media usually disallows VPNS/Tor and people who use those are probably not using any anonyminization. Its a very bad idea to say "LOL DESERVED IT" since the feds can break down your door.

This why why every left-of-center politician "condemns" it, even if deep inside, they are secretly celebrating it.

This is mentioned in DeathNote (I'm not glorifying any of the characters btw), Light said that in real life, people would always condemn extrajudicial killings because its a social norm/expectation to condem it, but if given anonymity (and without the censorship, of course), they would reveal their true feelings. Hence, Lemmy (for the left), 4chan (for the right). Reddit censored all those comments, which is why you don't see them.

IRL, admitting to enjoying a someone's death (excluding enemy combatants) could land you in involuntary commitment, lands you on top of government watchlists, they could send their goons to harass you. That's why you should never admit to it when on a non-anoynous account, and never say that IRL.

To achieve the extirpation of Nazi tyranny there are no lengths of violence to which we will not go. - Winston Churchill

[–] herseycokguzelolacak@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 hours ago

You know the universe loves irony when Charlie Kirt gets killed in a school shooting.

[–] TheBannedLemming@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Whoever the identity of the assassin is, they are clearly a good marksman. According to reports, they made that shot about 600 feet away from the rooftop of a nearby building. While Kirk was stationary most of the time, they landed a clean kill to the jugular with just one bullet and then made a quick getaway. That's Lee Harvey Oswald levels of accuracy. While I wouldn't estimate that the assassin was a hired professional. They likely have seasoned experience with firearms or possibly military or police training.

[–] Candid_Andy@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Lee Harvey Oswald was demoted from sharpshooter to marksman in the U.S. Marines in 1959, with a score of 191, indicating he was not a consistently good shooter by marine standards. However, KGB files from the time of his defection to the Soviet Union described him as a "poor shot" during target practice there, suggesting his marksmanship skills were inconsistent or underdeveloped.

[–] TheBannedLemming@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

You're not wrong. I am just relating it more in a historical context.
