Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

I'm predicting that Democrats respond by drawing homophobic fan art of Trump and Kim Jong Un together. They'll also say Trump is a Communist again.
Last time this happened, Trump paused the Ulchi Freedom Guardian war games in 2019 and every liberal insisted that the war games continue. It was good that the war games were paused but short lived.
I'm doubting Trump will actually stop the war games permanently. Liberals claim that DPRK loves Trump, but I've only ever seen KCNA publish articles saying that US foreign policy doesn't change based on the president elected. I've seen 2 KCNA articles critical of Trump's administration since he was inaugurated.
YEA ME AND NORTH KOREA ARE FUCKIN WHAT ABOUT IT

Kim's expression is what makes this picture
Kim said
Normalizing relations with NK but not Cuba
Maybe Kim could convince Trump to do a twofer?
~~twofer~~
Three-way
Is there a strategic reason for Trump trying to soften relations with the DPRK? Only reason I can think of is trying to get the DPRK to support a us war against China, but I doubt they would support that so idk what he is thinking
He's president deals baby
Loves shaking hands
Hexbears keep looking for the 12th dimensional chess moves but it's as simple as this
Being confronted with something as stupid and shallow as Trump is kinda terrifying, in its own way. But the reality is that sometimes a pen is just a pen.
I remember him reaching the right time of day for a stopped clock last time he did a diplomacy with the DPRK it was something like "Doing diplomacy with other countries is a very normal thing and things won't improve by not talking".
I think this is the reason. Plus it upsets libs when he shakes Kim's hand so its a double win
Yea that's all there is to it. He loves deals and he views himself as a master deal maker.
It's a perfect deal in his eyes. He gets to look strong dealing with an enemy of America and he makes a deal no other president could/would make.
only "logical" reason I can think of is aggressive posturing so SK makes concessions
Concessions to who? Like getting SK to be more of a dog to the USA than it already is?
yea
The DPRK has been building stronger ties with Russia in the past years, including military. Maybe they'll try to break that up by offering them better deals, in the goal of weakening Russia.
i honestly think it's just his contrarian impulse. it leads to like one good thing out of every ten thousand so in between accelerating trans genocide and building resort hotels in Gaza he'll also talk about developing relations with North Korea.
Lots of people don't know this but Kim Jong Un gave me just right lil wink. So - I love him - I love him.
Doubtful. The DPRK has made many statements over the last 7 years that they are unlikely to engage in any sort of rapprochement with the USA, unless America makes huge concessions like dropping denuclearization which I don't see happening.

If exercises can be ceased it will be a win for the DPRK. 4 years of no military exercises would offset the US' capability to wage a war against them by at least 4 years if not more. The personnel that are currently well trained and up to speed with battle plans for a war with the DPRK will churn out of service and entirely new troops would need to be trained in a significant number of exercises. I'd wager it would take at least 2 years to bring back up to capability after Trump's term is over.
Could be worthwhile. What do they lose by stroking his ego if he's willing to give something up to get it?
"Oh okay mister Trump we understand you won't back down on the denuclearisation so how about a middle ground? Stop the military exercises as a sign of good faith and we'll open up relations."

🥰

😳

So we're going to know them biblically?
🥺👉👈
Ok but why though?
Maybe because North Korea doesn't deserve to be cast out from all international affairs simply for daring to defy Western neoliberal hegemony?
Why does Trump specifically feel this way? He's a really dumb guy and doesn't see the vision that neoliberals have of punishing all transgressions against empire.
Bro is trying to be friendly with NK ok fine but doing this while pissing on all murican allies is a bold move.
okay but what are our countries' genders? do we have to pick which is the top or?
