Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Private schools should be illegal, but barring that giving them state funds is just a roundabout way to kill public education. The right wing's war on public education is truly something to behold. They have made tremendous strides and yet we hear nothing about it outside of educator's circles and the odd news article like this one.

Homeschooling should be illegal, too.

no-oil this fucker right here should never be forgotten when public education is discussed

I remember in a Blowback episode George HW Bush was the Darth Vader of privatization (of the military).

Underfund thing -> it underperforms -> people get mad -> private option sounds good -> private option sells your organs

Two awful peas in an awful pod.

At least we still have jeb

It sucks that this strategy seems to be working, and that libs seem to keep getting blindsided by it. Even though right-wingers explicitly, loudly talk about how their end goal is to eliminate public school entirely and have taxpayer-funded private christian schools as the primary educational institutes.

Buying a whole sea change of public opinion for 9 cents of candy is hilariously discouraging. We live on a clown world.

honk-enraged

This is actually insanely dangerous. I'm deeply afraid of this.

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 21 points 6 months ago

Yeah, just absolutely fucked.

In Texas they either now allow or are going to allow private schools to take public funds. I don’t see how public education can even survive that.

[–] marxisthayaca@hexbear.net 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

The way they have been making HISD worse with that god awful superintendent, fucking sucks.

[–] Tunnelvision@hexbear.net 8 points 6 months ago

I’ve only interacted with FWISD so I haven’t really seen it first had yet but I mean it’s the most blatant attack on the individual I’ve ever seen in my life I think. Like from now on you can guarantee your children will be less educated than yourself. It makes me sick and I don’t know what to do other than stuff that we shouldn’t talk about in open coms.

"alternatives gain political support" glasses-off

"we took public schools out back and put a 12 gauge through them" glasses-on

what a future, when american children can toil in factories to make pool noodles that the chinese working class can buy, a dozen for a farthing...

[–] Sons_of_Ferrix@hexbear.net 34 points 6 months ago (2 children)

It's gonna be an odd future where Chinese Maoists will be posting online about how the American Peasantry needs to rise up against the ChineSSe PMC Labor Aristocracy exploiting them for tasty treats!

[–] 7bicycles@hexbear.net 23 points 6 months ago

It's gonna get real confusing when we get Maoist Standard Mandarin but the etymology stems from Maoist Standard English

I feel like I got a really good public education at a time when it was rare.

And now it's getting rarer. Not great!

[–] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 12 points 6 months ago

All my children will go to Donda Academy

Historically, communist revolutions have occurred in countries with extremely low literacy rates. Once education becomes something only the bourgeoisie have access too, and is no longer being used as a means of pacifying the working class, the proletariat can "feel out" the contradictions in the system much more clearly, even if they would lack the means of articulating it all fully.
