I think youre overthinking this, a little. They arent 'trying' to do anything, the situation does not matter to rich NYC liberals at all. They think itll juice ratings a little bit or drive clicks, so they do it. They ideological bent is that socialists are off limits, everyone else regardless of politic is on. Look how they make a little joke about the slavery thing, even Nikki gets in on because at the end of the day they are all together.
