badposting is a comm where you post badly

This is not a !the_dunk_tank@hexbear.net alternative. This is not a !memes@hexbear.net alternative. This is a place for you to post your bad posts.

Ever had a really shitty bit idea? Joke you want to take way past the point of where it was funny? Want to feel like a stand-up comedy guy who's been bombing a set for the past 30 minutes straight and at this point is just saying shit to see if people react to it? Really bad pun? A homemade cringe concoction? A cognitohazard that you have birthed into this world and have an urge to spread like chain mail?

Rules:

  1. Do not post good posts.
    • Unauthorized goodposting is to be punished in the manner of commenting the phrase "GOOD post" followed by an emoji that has not yet been used in the thread
    • Use an emoticon/kaomoji/rule-three-abiding ASCII art if the rations run out
  2. This is not a comm where you direct people to other people's bad posts. This is a comm where you post badly.
  3. This rule intentionally left blank.
  4. If you're struck for rule 3, skill issue, not allowed to complain about it.

Code of Conduct applies just as much here as it does everywhere else. Technically, CoC violations are bad posts. On the other hand: L + ratio + get ~~better~~ worse material bozo

Anglos really are bad at naming things, they'll see a river that is yellow and call it the "Yellow river"

Ok this isn't as anglicised as it could be.

Hunan and Hubei wouldn't be Lake North and Lake South, true Anglo convention would have it as Norlake and Sulake like Norfolk and Suffolk.

Similarly, Hainan wouldn't be Seasouth, it would be Sussea.

Ningxia wouldn't be Firthslot, Ning means peaceful, Firth is an anglicised version of "Fjord" meaning estuary. Summerset or Summerside is a better Anglo name. (Edit: I misread Frith as Firth, whoops. But odd they used Frith here but not for Xi'an, which would be Wesfrith)

Qinghai being Bluesea is very boring. 青 can mean blue or green, but also azure and cyan (as well black and purple). Azuresea sounds cooler. But 青 also means verdant or lush. Verdantsea (since it's rolling green grass) is closer to the actual name.

Heilongjiang being Blackwater River sucks. Black Dragon River is the literal translation. Black Dragon Bourne is the coolest translation (yes I know Bourne is technically a stream not a river).

But more importantly where are all the silly british names, like we see in ingland such as slutshole lane (norfolk) stiffkey (village) Butt Hole Road (now Archers Way because the peasants of Conisbrough are sticks in the mud) Dicks Mount (also Norfolk) Hooker Road (Norwich) and most importantly, COCKthorpe (another village)

It's not "Newmark" it's East Tarkistoon zenz angery

[–] JohnBrownsBussy2@hexbear.net 11 points 8 hours ago

I've spot checked enough of the names that I am going to accept the rest uncritically.

After the Nethergate opened up, my beloved halfling village of Luckshire was destroyed. As the last survivor, I fled to the neighboring town of Warmshire, where my warnings fell on deaf ears, except for one new friend who agreed to help me get to Boatshire and onto the sea.

We hoped to find safety at Greenholm, only to discover that the treacherous Wizard-Lord of Reektower had taken the opportunity to attack. In desperation, we backtracked to Faywelken Haven, to seek aid from the forest folk. Though we nearly became trapped there for eternity, we managed to win their favor, and they took us through a magical pathway, across the Barrowlands, and left us outside ~~Westeros~~ Westrow, where the war had not yet reached.

We waited in a long line before we finally got an audience with the king. A representative from Arrowshire was there and seemed sympathetic to our cause, but the king of Westrow refused to heed our warning. But on our way out, someone approached us and told us to come to Helplight. When we arrived, we found a militia already assembling, gathered from surrounding areas with some coming from as far as Twyfeast and Winklelight, and ready to fight back the demon hordes pouring through Nethergate - though they seemed unprepared and under-equipped.

We marched southeast until we arrived at Weylight, which had been fighting the demons in the field, and suffering defeat after defeat. I was clear now that they were preparing for a prolonged siege to defend the city itself. Our militia joined the defenders, and soon enough, they arrived.

We fought through the day and into the night. Countless demons fell to our blades, but the numbers that had been coming through the Nethergate were endless. In our darkest hour, when all hope seemed lost, a figure appeared on the hillside - The lord of Arrowshire had arrived with a full battalion of archers, which rained death on the demon army and forced them back off the walls! Yet we knew it was just a temporary respite, so we gathered the survivors, and what wounded we could carry, and evacuated the city, joining the archers.

Though we survived, we were battered and beaten, and it was clear more than ever that we had no hope of driving the enemy back from whence they came. But that night, I had a dream, where one of the forest folk from before visited me, and told me of a second gate, the Dreamgate, which, once opened, would allow me to harness the power of Dreams, the only thing more powerful than the creatures of Nightmares. When I awoke, I rushed to Lord Arrowshire and begged him to help me get to the Dreamgate, but he thought I had gone mad from the battle and ordered me restrained. But then, the adorable little animal mascot who's been with me the whole time but who I never mentioned but you probably assumed I had anyway lifted the keys from a guard and I escaped, determined to travel alone if I had to, across enemy territory, to find the Dreamgate. I had only made it over the first hill when I found my first companion, who'd been with me the whole time. "You said it's in the southeast, right? You're heading the wrong way. You keep heading this way you'll run smack into the Barrowlands and Lord Reektower's undead hoards," they said, and we set off together, this time in the right direction.

I got to the Dreamgate where I probably saw my dead parents and confronted some truth about myself and probably fought dream version of myself representing my trauma or some shit and gained superpowers and singlehandedly saved the day and returned to the start of my journey having learned something blah blah heroes journey let's wrap this up already.

The End.

Taiwan being Folkstow is wild

[–] miz@hexbear.net 8 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (1 children)

always thought it was Tower (Platform) Bay

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 5 points 6 hours ago

yeh how come it's folkstow and then tower (platform) north?

the name "Taiwan" as well as many place names on the island are originally of indigenous origin. not sure how close "Taiwan" is related to Paiwan (an indigenous nation). apparently Tainan didn't have any meaning of "Tai-south" when it was the original colonial capital.

many place names started out as indigenous place names or Minnan/Hakka settler place names, then became translated or calqued into Japanese place names during the occupation era, and then standardized to Mandarin during the guomindang era, so they don't make any kind of sense if you try to translate them.

Barroweast sounds like the protagonist's home town in a fantasy novel

Greateven is the wealthy but stratified city where he gets embroiled in the schemes of the rival merchant houses who vie for control of the economy

Yove Waste is the vast, dangerous barrens he has to cross to evade an enemy army

Westlair is where he has to go to in order to persuade fierce and proud dragons to ally with him against the evil empire

EDIT: Damn, I never knew Flatland took place in the DPRK
