This is no laughing matter. There used to be a Wikipedia category for scientists who committed suicide. (With a subcategory: Mathematicians who committed suicide.) Probably removed because it got overly broad or something.

Submitted it to Reddit's r/MorbidReality once, they just fucking removed it. Reddit mods are assholes.

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 43 points 3 days ago

Was probably the "you can help expand this list by contributing" line at the top.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (2 children)

i'm guessing the subcategory got removed because of slapfights between pure and applied mathematicians

[–] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 2 days ago

List of suicides

You can help by expanding it

I'll prove who's more applied!

There’s a great book called “the advent of the algorithm” and it has a chapter about how frequently logicians lose their minds and take their lives.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

working with abstract ideas alienates you from other human beings as you see the world in a fundamentally different way than most people and you lose touch with social norms that are the building-blocks of social connection. it doesn't help that folks also tend to treat you like your a freak/monster because they are terrified of things they don't understand, like logic or pure mathematics.

even talking about how logic works at a 101 level is going to make people resent you in a casual social situation. and advanced logic is basically witchcraft for anyone not working that field, of which there are maybe a hundred or two globally.

out of 9/10 people I meet, who find out my academic background, become immediately hostile to me about it. as my graduate degree is some sort of personal attack on them. shit's wild. and the 1 person who isn't offended by it is mostly because they just don't care and don't judge people for stuff like that. maybe 1/50 I meet thinks it's a positive or interesting thing and 1/2 of those folks will get offended because I don't know about some obscure thing they think is related to my field, but isn't at all.

In my studying days in Australia, i lived with a guy who studied abstract mathematics. I found that shit fascinating, but could only understand 1/3 of it. Dude was interesting as fuck!

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

a lot of abstract math eventually finds an application, which is even cooler. there is just a gap of a decade or two typically.

[–] TheRealKuni@piefed.social 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This reminds me of the book Three-Body Problem, which has a whole bunch of physicists going down the suislide near the beginning.

[–] SippyCup@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The pool table analogy not making it in to the show was disappointing.

[–] impairedimperator@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

...it was definitely in the show? Even had some of the cooler bits of CGI.

[–] redditmodssucks@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

So are lemmy users now that I’ve been here for a while!

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Something tells me this may not be a unbiased opinion.

You are all the same

I like how the bottom panel adds nothing and detracts from the humor.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 18 points 3 days ago

I don't know if it adds anything but it does not detract.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I don't need a "laugh track" in my joke to tell me it's funny.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 2 points 3 days ago

Nah you do, be honest

Maybe a red circle around the text would help draw your focus.

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 days ago

The original versions of this meme didn't have it

Her shirt kinda looks like the ships with container, who keep comittinf suicide by running into iranian mines.

Judging by the Star Wars Holiday Special, this must be Chewbacca's uncle.

Incredible analogy

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I would wager that any fluid dynamics book is cursed and it is rather forbidden knowledge not meant for mortals.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This is probably a bad time to announce my new "predict turbulence" Turing test.

I will prove that turbulence in a compressible liquid is Turing complete.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

"The Ring" movie was based on this book, with Japan and Hollywood taking their usual liberties and slightly changing it.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Stop reminding me about Daveigh Chase

[–] red_bull_of_juarez@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

"States of Matter" by David L. Goodstein

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago

Only five chapters?! This one's gonna be easy!

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 3 days ago

I had a professor who called it "Sadistical Thermo-god-damn-its"

When i took it it wasn't that bad but maybe our professor went easy on us.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 10 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Well, at least it isn't transfinite set theory. Or AI research.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

won't the libs stop! now they're turning the finite set theories trans!?

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Speaking on higher-order infinities, let's take pity on the MAGA crowd: Of the uncountably many things they'll never understand is just how hot Cantor's diagonal argument is. Just look at it, squeezed into that tightly-packed matrix.

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Both of those are pretty tame in comparison. Thermodynamics isn't for the faint of heart.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 8 points 3 days ago

I personally wouldn't call the former particularly tame, and the latter of the two comes with the additional burden of knowing that you're the engineer of our collective end rather than just a student of it.

But I'm not going to argue that grappling with Thermodynamics is easy either. I'm not that far gone.

[–] AmyAye@nord.pub 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Like half my ME courses in college were basically the same Thermodynamics stuff repacked in a new way.

(Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, IC Engines, at least 2 others I forget the name of).

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Theoretical Thermodynamics and Statistic Physics is different from applied thermodynamics. The latter is fiiinnnneeee. The former is mind melting. I don't know how deviously engineers get tortured. The gloves come off for physics students for sure.

[–] NewSocialWhoDis@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Agree. I took Thermodynamics in my Undergraduate Aerospace Engineering coursework, and it was one of my favorite classes. I took Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics in my Applied Physics Masters, and it was one of the hardest courses I've taken.

what book is this?

[–] farmgineer@nord.pub 3 points 2 days ago

Huh, I must've read that at some point previously, though I don't remember it.

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Seems to me that the sentence you want to highlight is "Perhaps it will be wise to approach the subject cautiously."
