I applaud the troll aspect of it all, but imma stick with GIMP.

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 70 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I adore Krita. Gimp is useful for exporting more esoteric file formats, but Krita does the heavy lifting in my artwork.

[–] chocrates@piefed.world 29 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Was gonna say, gimp is open source and mature, why the hell would users use this?

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (3 children)

Having used both for years, Photoshop is a better product by miles. It's not even close.

Inkscape, QGIS, Blender, OBS, Jellyfin - there's lots of FOSS products that go toe-to-toe against the commercial stuff.

GIMP is not one of them.

[–] Flukeyfox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's a shame it's not open source, but I've found Affinity to be a great alternative to Photoshop + Illustrator. Especially with them recently going free. I've always felt GIMP has been a little... Lacking. I hope one day it has that large burst of development and catches up, like how Blender did so long ago... As I'll always prefer open source.

I'm sadly stuck with Adobe for stuff like Substance Painter + Designer for now :/

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (2 children)

At this point I don't think GIMP will ever have a competent UI. All the people contributing to it are those who like working with GIMP and don't actually want a massive UI overhaul.

But just opening a ficking folder with lots of large image files in it alone makes GIMP nearly unusable for me. I don't love waiting 2 minutes to name and save a fucking document.

It's the whole suite of Adobe, not just photoshop

[–] plateee@piefed.social 7 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Because Photoshop is far superior to gimp for.... reasons? But Photoshop costs $$$$$, so this is like free.

/s

Honestly, the only thing not to like about GIMP is the name. There was a fork a while ago, but that closed down.

[–] LegoBrickOnFire@lemmy.world 28 points 5 days ago (5 children)

Non-destructive transforms not existing is definitely a thing not to like about GIMP

[–] LegoBrickOnFire@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I hoped someone would correct me and tell me I am stupid and that of course GIMP has nondestructive transforms and then procede to explain how. I guess that trick doesn't always work :p

[–] 9bananas@feddit.org 4 points 5 days ago

it does always work!

...if you're wrong!

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 5 days ago

And pixel management.

But Krita somehow fulfills that, configured correctly.

There are also the high seas for those who want to sail! Old shops are very good, no ai stuff.

[–] CmykStudent@fosstodon.org 5 points 5 days ago

@LegoBrickOnFire @plateee For raster layers, yes (at the moment). You can do non-destructive transforms on vector layers and link layers (so you could add an external PNG/JPEG/SVG/etc to a composition as a layer and then non-destructively transform it).

Transforms are really a filter under the hood, so we have the infrastructure to make them all non-destructive. Just need to work on the UI elements. :)

GIMP was always better anyway

And that is a purely objective take that has nothing to do with the fact that it's the one I used first

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 72 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

Using the thing of the enemy to destroy the other thing of the enemy... yeah that's justice. (but really though, I rather use actual homegrown open source projects like Krita instead of faux Photoshop)

[–] mEEGal@lemmy.world 35 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Faux-toshop is a nice name for it

[–] Amir@lemmy.ml 16 points 5 days ago

I prefer Photoslop

[–] SirSamuel@lemmy.world 16 points 6 days ago (3 children)

I yearned to be a savior against injustice without contemplating the cost and by the time I looked down there was no longer any ground beneath my feet. What is my sacrifice? I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them. I burn my decency for someone else's future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I'll never see.

How long until the "developers" drop this project because they have no idea what the code does or how to maintain it?

[–] wuffwuffwuff@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

be fair, they'll figure out a bit more what to do with it next time there's a Claude point release.

[–] Doorbook@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It is funny how adobe was one of the first company to steal people cloud images to train their ai. Now AI stealing their entire company.

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 43 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (6 children)

Context? Did someone decompile photoshop?

[–] AmbitiousProcess@piefed.social 79 points 6 days ago (1 children)

They used an AI model to repeatedly generate guesses of the code until it matched the compiled bytecode, then AI-generated new code based on the decompiled source to create a technically unique codebase that can do most of the same functions and looks extremely close to the original.

Has essentially every feature, but also bugs out a lot or has features that technically work, but not in the same way as Photoshop (e.g. magic wand selection tool might bug out and select stuff on more than one layer, and might be less accurate and selecting fine edges)

[–] Tacky4092@feddit.org 39 points 5 days ago

It's almost like it was vibe coded!

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 80 points 6 days ago

Kind of maybe? There's a lot of info flying around but the bottom line is that they rebuilt it in rust and it's Ai slop code and sucks.

[–] finalarbiter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 44 points 6 days ago

Somebody used ai to launder a leaked source. From what I understand, it's about as functional as one can expect a fully slop coded project to be (barely).

[–] irate944@piefed.social 34 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

It’s been found that LLMs are actually great at decompiling things. Whereas before this process was possible but very time consuming, LLMs can do it in hours/days depending on the software.

So there’s a group that is decompiling Adobe software and rewriting it in Rust, and then published the apps + rewritten code

Edit: then there’s the larger implication, that is that pretty much any software can become open source now

[–] Lauchmelder@feddit.org 39 points 6 days ago (2 children)

So we have AIs turning proprietary software into open source software, and AIs rewriting open source software into proprietary software. Wonder what will happen if we run this in a loop

[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 21 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Wonder what will happen if we run this in a loop

Out of memory error, probably.

[–] Asweet@piefed.ca 28 points 6 days ago

The entire world is experiencing an out of memory error thanks to this loop

Ever since the latest AI models have come out, closed source essentially ceased to be. You can get something closely resembling the original source code from just about any running binary now.

I saw the LTT video on this. Seems I was right in thinking that the program isn't smooth enough to be usable. I saw give it a few months and it might be a serious contender

[–] crypt0cler1c@infosec.pub 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The Sloppening.

Honestly, I'm so here for this even though I hate slop.

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago

On one hand, the democratization of software we're heading into is incredible.

On the other hand, as a software engineer, the democratization of software is horrifying.

I'm conflicted.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 13 points 5 days ago (9 children)

Full compatibility with Windows apps on Wine when?

[–] Blackfeathr@lemmy.world 14 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

I hope this means Photoshop will be functional on Linux sooner rather than later?

ETA: coming from someone with little to no knowledge about program code btw

[–] boletus@sh.itjust.works 22 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's been ai slop decompiled so nearly useless to actual developers.

[–] dylanTheDeveloper@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I thought the AI translates the decompiled code into human readable language rather than doing the actual decomp

[–] boletus@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

The general goal of a decompilation is to convert machine code back into something that, when compiled, generates machine code that is similar to or identical to the original machine code. But most decompilation projects also aim to make sure that the decompiled code is actually workable by humans so as to preserve, port, extend and generally make a codebase that has clear intent and may be similar to the code used to write the original game.

Ai decompilations are often done such that they technically check the first box, but are completely unusable for a normal engineer to want to use due to insane verbosity or in some cases just getting context or intent entirely wrong. Without proper guidance, the codebase is basically just an incoherent mess. With deep guidance, it would still take ages for these projects to be decompiled. For reference of how long they take and how thorough a proper decompilation can be check out the jak 1 decompilation project.

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 6 points 5 days ago

But they rewrote the decompiled code into Rust. Probably to evade legal troupble.

I wouldn't trust the slop.

[–] bookmeat@fedinsfw.app 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

How are they handling the patents? Somebody might get sued real bad.
