During the medieval period there was no currency used throughout the whole of Germany. Most used the Silver Penny (Pfennig) but there were different types with a different value (amount of silver in them) that also changed over time (some were more stable, some changed every year). People were obligated to exchange old coins for the new ones and part of the exchange was held back by the people in charge (the so called Schlagschatz). Also people coming from a different location were obligated to exchange their coins or silver bars to the local currency at the time. The exchange rates were quite different.

It was a complete mess. But somehow it worked.

monads are monoids in the category of endofunctors.

[–] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 hours ago

I have many but they only come out when I absolutely do not need them.

Dont do this.

You can hurt yourself if you grab the top of your thumb with the fingers of the same hand and make a motion like youre banging a hammer with your wrist.

Dont do this.

The aging sun will make the continental drift stop via increased solar activity which will accelerate rock weathering. This will break the carbon cycle long before the earth is absorbed by the sun going in its red giant phase.

[–] nullify3112@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

UPDATE: the wiki has been updated! “However, a 2024 paper by RJ Graham et al. argues that silicate weathering is far less temperature-dependent than initially thought, and that falling carbon dioxide levels are unlikely to lead to the death of life on Earth” yay!

The moon of course causes the tides, but the tides are also causing the moon to drift away from earth.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

And the moon drifting away is stealing some of our rotational energy, making the days longer.

We're also lucky to be on this planet during the time the sun and moon's apparent sizes match. Being able to see a total solar eclipse where you can see immediately around the sun without needing a spaceship might be incredibly rare in the universe. Though total solar eclipses in general are pretty common, assuming our gas giants' accumulation of moons is typical for giant planets, they'd happen any time the moon passed through the giant's shadow.

I have been noticing lately that the days seem longer, nice to know why

With vanishingly rare exception, addicts choose the mood altering substance that is closest to what the medically accepted treatment for their underlying disorder(s) would be.

People who are addicted to alcohol, without exception, have an underlying anxiety disorder.

People with ADHD and similar brain functioning tend to choose amphetamines.

The list goes on and it gets very complicated, because most mood altering substances have multiple effects, and most people have a blend of underlying issues. But the point is, there is a very noteworthy observation there, I feel.

I feel qualified to say this as myself I am 11 years sober and have worked in the field of addiction for 8 years and I'm formally educated.

[–] Schlemmy@lemmy.ml 1 points 59 minutes ago

I have ADHD and I trend to get into a comfortabele alcohol Buzz every evening because it shows down the train of emotions. Amphetamines don't really feel good, nor do other drugs. I hate speed and weed.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

But I liked all of the drugs.

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 1 points 1 hour ago

Is this related to the cravings for certain food?

[–] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 hours ago

Lol yeah its called self medicating

If you own a rig to run local LLMs, your computer can also pretty much run weather prediction softwares

The Mission Impossible theme, you know, the "Dun! Dun! DADA! Dun! Dun! Duhduh!" one, written in 5/4 time? That's supposed to spell MI for Mission: Impossible, in Morse code. --.. dash dash dot dot, MI. The first two notes are dotted quarter notes, 1.5 beats each for a total of 3 beats, then two quarter notes for each dot, total of 2 beats, grand total of 5 beats per measure. 5/4 time.

FIND A PRACTICAL USE FOR THAT SHIT.

Hey! Same for Rush's YYZ. The morse code for Y-Y-Z (the airport code for the Toronto airport where the band no doubt spent a lot of time) is --.- --.- --.. which is a rhythmic motif that appears a bunch in the song in some ungodly meter I don't care to look up right now.

Popes and priests before the renaissance (I can’t remember the specific cut off) were told not to fuck, but all did as it was seen that no one was that godly to deny sex. Early bishops were a hereditary position passed from “celibate” father to son. Oh and the Avignon popes basically built the first European sin city because one of them really loved fucking and gambling.

[–] MrEff@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

Reading The Sparrow. There is a discussion between characters (one is a priest) about celibacy. He quips:

"When asking 400 honest priests if they still partake in self pleasure, 398 will say yes."

"What of the other two?"

"Elementary Watson. Clearly we can deduce they have no hands."

Blue eyes in humans were the result of a mutation. Due to less pigment than average eyes are more sensitive to glare and bright light

Chronologically, Tyrannosaurus rex was closer to humans than to sauropods.

[–] El_Scapacabra@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 hours ago

Closer? It's standing right behind me isn't it?

Sharks evolved before Saturn's rings and the North Star existed.

[–] Underwaterbob@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago

I read that as "Sauron"'s rings. 🙃
