But seriously what kind of predatory policy is that in the first place?

Another trick is to change your state to California, which has a click to cancel law.

The FTC made C2C a requirement nationwide for the US but Trump undid that in 2025.

[–] NotAnOtter@lemmus.org 22 points 16 hours ago

That policy is likely illegal.

But the same can be said about gambling platforms.

As an European, the "you can't close your account too fast, this process is mandatory" thing would be a one way to a trial.

[–] Nowtayneicangetinto@thelemmy.club 30 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

You Europeans and your consumer protection laws... I love getting ripped off and taken advantage of by companies!

[–] AbsoluteBroomstick@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago

Ahem, it's your freedom to be ripped off!

[–] Yeahigotskills2@lemmy.ml 5 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

I wonder how MAGA would frame this? "Unlike in Socialist Europe, our successful companies are free from the oppressive, anti-business protection racket their citizens have to deal with"

[–] BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago

And not a trial vs consumer, you'd be sued to oblivion by consumer protection agency.

[–] NotAnOtter@lemmus.org 4 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

It’s almost certainly illegal in the Us too

Not sure if you're aware of this, but companies break laws in the EU too.

That policy is likely illegal in the US & it certainly is extremely uncommon. I've never heard of it. This post isn't an EU vs US thing which they were trying to make it.

That's the meaning.

So you have to abstain for 91 days to be able to close your account??? Fucking slime

[–] cloudshouter@lemmy.zip 12 points 20 hours ago

I think it might be 114+. People with compulsion/addiction issues aren’t allowed to leave.

This is super clever. I cannot believe this never occurred to me, and I discovered it in a Lemmy 'shitpost' no less.

Let's keep up the memes and shitposts in this category!

And polymarket, despite being a literal gambling site, is actually fraud

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 50 points 1 day ago (5 children)

What country is "you can't close your account unless you go 90 days without using it first" legal in?

[–] Strawberry@lemmy.blahaj.zone 29 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The USA. Facebook also does this.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

One tactic on social media is to delete as much as you can, change all your profile data so it's bogus, and retroactively revise as much of your comment history so that it's meaningless, such as NSA haikus.

That way the account may not be closed, but it's toxic. It will poison algorithm analyis, your consumer profile and AI scraping.

The Escapist refused to let me close my account in the early 2010s. So I did this.

[–] ryathal@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This looks like a gambling app. So it's not that you can't close it until it's not used. Voluntary exclusion is a mandatory policy required by legislation so a gambling addict can ask a casino to functionally ban them. This app is extra predatory in that they don't allow a permanent ban right away. Their goal is to make it take multiple requests so an addict can relapse and spend more money and it's the addicts fault.

its called "laxed regulation for dubious reasons". happens all the time because government officials should probably wear F1 gear with all their sponsor logos slapped on them.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

If the press were doing its job, they would put politicians' donors' names on the screen with them.

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 11 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I remember a few people complaining about being permanently banned from online games for lying in the in-game chat about being very young.

I started dipping into watching regular cable again since we have it at the moment bundled with our internet, and man the commercials are bleak now. It’s all weight loss medication, depression medication, and gambling apps.

I wonder how permanent closure is different from permanent lockout, but maybe it is similar enough in this case (I expect, they keep your data in the latter case)

[–] SleeplessCityLights@programming.dev 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They would dump your data asap. They want no record that they illegally let a minor use their site.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

they'd keep it just to show that once they found out the account was a minor's, they closed the account immediately. it's proof of compliance.

But they certainly wouldn't share that 12yo's information with other companies to prove how good a company they are in shutting down a 12yo's account, giving other companies all the information from the 12yo's account to help the other companies better shut down future 12yo's accounts.

"We're not sharing a 12 year old's information. We're passing on information on how to prevent us from sharing a 12 year old's information in the future!"

It's a gambling site.

Gambling is inherently predatory. It's addictive. Gambling sites prey on this addiction. They're not gonna let you go so easily. The wait period is to see if you're really one of their best customers, unable to go cold-turkey.
