Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Wtf even is the "need a roommate" argument in the context of making your bed?? I couldn't even get my damn roommate to clean his own fkn dishes let alone ask someone to make my bed for me lol

[–] AppleTea@lemmy.zip 71 points 1 week ago

The last time this was posted, I think I recall someone saying this is a translation flub rather than what this guy actually means.

But it is funny to imagine he thinks a roomate is like when Baron Ünderbheit went to college.

You don't understand, you're the roommate that would be replaced by the robot.

[–] BitUnWise@programming.dev 3 points 1 week ago

A charitable reading is "if you have a bed making robot, you can't claim you need a roommate for monetary reasons"

Do rich people think anyone who regularly interacts with them is automatically a servant?

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 32 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not other rich people; only they are treated as humans

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Rich people treat other rich people as threats

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

My assumption when this was posted 3 weeks ago was that the guy is assuming people who can afford a bed making robot are not poor, thus they do not need a roommate. Its an avocado toast argument, not a "kids are so lazy" one. Second person misread that, i believe.

I agree that this is more plausible, but it's still almost as baffling, since it suggests that the existence of some people who can afford a (hypothetical) bed-making robot implies the nonexistence of people who can't. Like, at least Ovacado toast in a cafe was a vaguely affordable luxury that someone could conceivably stretch their means to occasionally purchase. This is more like "all you need to do to stop being poor is cut back on having your chauffer paint himself in gold leaf to match your limo".

So a missing /s in his post made him the villain ?

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 53 points 1 week ago (1 children)

this man has never even imagined being held.

[–] FluidBeef@quokk.au 6 points 1 week ago

Now he won’t have to!

[–] potatobro@lemmy.blahaj.zone 45 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's one bed making robot Micheal. How much can it cost, $10?

posts door dash receipt for one bed making robot plus all of the fees

Huh. That's actually slightly more 🤔

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 42 points 1 week ago (1 children)

So uh… anyone who expects their roommate to just act as a live-in personal housekeeper needs to take a step back and literally fuck their own face

[–] AVincentInSpace@pawb.social 7 points 1 week ago

The rich would never stoop so low as to blow themselves. That's gay. They have people for that.

[–] orenj@leminal.space 32 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I still cant fathom what this guy even means. What does it have to do with owning a diet slave machine?

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Maybe he can only imagine someone would live with him if they got paid to work for him?

[–] teslekova@lemmy.ml 30 points 1 week ago

Huh. Maybe he is a noble from Oxford in the 1600s, where one could employ one's roommate as a servant, allowing the slightly lower classes to access education.

[–] phonics@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago

But who makes your ~~slave's~~ roommate's bed?

[–] derry@midwest.social 23 points 1 week ago

New roommate just dropped Fry and Bender from Futurama going into an apartment

[–] Slab_Bulkhead@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

get me a real robot (not one piloted by some poor dude in India) that can work a job, pay rent, plus not need a room ( ok maybe a closest for charging) and i might consider it.

[–] ekZepp@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

Just try explain empathy to a sociopath.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Rich people talk to themselves in the mirror because no one actually cares about them, so a clanker is perfect for them.

I think you put an "need a" and "argument" too much in there
