"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

What he means is:

"You should keep buying our expensive product as fast as possible, no matter what anyone else says!"

[–] deeprlyeh@lemmus.org 9 points 1 week ago (3 children)

If AI wins or doesn’t, he will still make all the money. No, reason to not trust him.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He willl make less money if AI slows down, so his opinion can't be trusted.

While I do see AI usage as a danger, I don't see an AI gaining super intelligence within 3 years and killing everyone.

The pollution from the data centers is the bigger threat as is the cognitive decline of the users.

[–] Goodeye8@piefed.social 20 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

The problem isn't AI gaining intelligence, it's allowing AI to have agency and then it gets an potentially dangerous prompt that leads it to hack into, just for the sake of being funny, a bunch of places to delete the entire stock market. As funny as it would be it would lead to a complete economic collapse. I'd actually feel safer if it did have actual intelligence. We're talking about a technology where if you have broken unit tests (software term meaning a certain set of tests the code has to pass to be considered functional) and you tell AI to "fix the unit tests" there's a non-zero chance of it just deleting the tests and saying it's fixed.

AI is dangerous not in the way movies present it where it gains sentience and wipes us out. It's dangerous in the opposite way where it doesn't have intelligence and wipes us out because it doesn't understand it's doing something that's going to kill us.

The reason AI is a danger is because it's dumb.

They're literally giving it bombs and complete autonomy in drones already

What happens when you give a very unintelligent baby a chambered pistol with the safety off? Now do that with tens of thousands of babies.

TBF, he's right. AI won't destroy the world. Humans using AI will.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 8 points 1 week ago

And especially humans peddling AI.

Man selling shovels in a gold rush says there's gold out there, and it is in no way uranium that will give you cancer if you fill your pockets with it. Just keep buying shovels.

No, the gold rush isn't over, says shovel salesman.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago

its the jackets, he wants it solid gold.

Definitely no need to regulate my shovels!

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 1 week ago

You’re so close to the gold bro, just buy a couple more shovels.

[–] dudeface@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I agree with him purely because an LLM is not intelligent, any time you hear about it doing something like hacking on its own it was a marketing stunt

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (7 children)

My son in law doesn't believe that. You can tell he is down the rabbit hole on it. Its pretty clear this is all happening to create the lie that these algorithmic word salads have volition.

Shockingly the CEO of the company that would benefit from regulatory capture of AI says that, and the CEO of the company that would suffer from regulatory capture of AI says this. What a shock...

[–] massacre@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Man who sells shovels very concerned about digging regulations and notes that digging a hole to the center of the earth unlikely to kill all humans by 2030.

Its almost like nvidia has so much imaginary valuation tied up in the whole AI bullshit that they know when it crashes, it could very likely take nvidia with it.

and I, personally, think it will be a good day for nvidia to die as a company. They've been at the forefront of making shit worse for customers for well over a decade now.

lol the guys entire business model is selling the components that make this bullshit spin. Of course he would say that. His opinion isn’t worth shit.

Ah yes, the "Legitimate" Lord Neverwinter wants us all to stay and watch the games until the end. There will be a gift for each of us.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

He personally makes more money this way, so this is not a surprise.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's a crack in the AI-bros alliance.

On one side, AI companies running out of cash for their expansion race and looking for excuses to pause everything but more importantly everyone else with them.

On the other side, the only corp that actually sells something, invested shitload of money in the AI hype and needs making profit on hardware at an insane rates to recoup his investments otherwise he's toast.

His denial actually makes the warnings more credible. For a while I was worried why they'd all agree.

[–] crispbacon99@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago

Large language models have plateaued is something they won't admit plus they wanna do the regulations while the Israeli controlled us government is still in power

[–] Hawanja@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Just watched a majority report video, the gist was the A.I. companies want regulations to prevent other companies (like say from China) competing in the US, so they're spreading this b.s. alarmist drivel about how we're 6 months away from skynet.

I seriously doubt it as well. Chances AI destroys humanity within the next 3 years and 3 months should be close to zero. The conclusion, though! Why would we do that if it destroys us for example by 2034?!??

[–] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 19 points 1 week ago (3 children)

OpenAI/Anthropic want regulation to make sure they dominate the market and prevent any competition. Nvidia wants no regulation so they can sell as many GPUs as possible and keep driving the prices up. That's pretty much all there is to this supposed debate about the dangers of AI.

NVIDIA recently acquired HuggingFace for a huge sum. It makes perfect sense that Huang would say something like that.

[–] DonkeyStar@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Jensen Huang should be forced to wear a polo shirt whenever he does this shit. I genuinely think he’d stop.

[–] Cheebus@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

I just wanted to play fucking video games, not fund eugenics

Jensen, take your stupid fucking jacket, shove it up your ass

But a 100% chance by 2031.
