NEMA is an American standard used in North America and parts of Asia. NEMA 10-30 specifically is a dual voltage socket that delivers 120V or 240V depending on whether you use L1/Neutral or L1/L2. It isn’t used anymore though as it isn’t grounded.
The convenient 73 variants insure that you cannot use the wrong plug into the wrong outlet, thus increasing user safety through simple design choices.
Yea there’s too many variations, but I don’t dislike the concept of different designs for different currents. Here in Denmark there is zero difference between a 10A, 13A or 16A 230V outlet, you’ll only know when the fuse blows. Though most outlets in the house is 13A. We also use the CEE standard, but that is mainly for industrial use and sucks to connect and disconnect.
I've got one in my wall and my clothes dryer is plugged into it. My house was built in 1962 and the electrical situation in my house remains the fucking nightmare it was when the house was built, though.

Network loops are real. Network loops are common. Network loops are the leading cause of people screaming "for fucks sake!" After spending far too long looking for other solutions to why the network goes down intermittently.
If you remember to use a cross-over cable, it ruins the address resolution protocol and stops everything from working.
Modern routers have code exclusively to detect it and disable the ports.
And if you don't have spanning tree enabled, this could be a big problem
If you have a good switch or router, correct. If you have cheap consumer level crap, it could potentially cause a lot of issues until you unplug it. It wholly depends what’s on the other end of those jacks, though. Who knows what “in” and “out” mean in this context.
If you did it at my office, nothing because typically only one of those jacks is cross connected (the other is a spare wire) also our switches use spanning tree. Most network loops I've seen have been caused by logical configuration errors.
Internets require a zero static loop. Gotta keep the bits flowing or they degrade.

I did this in college (2011) once... Friday class was going over stuff I already understood and got bored, found a cable and played with it for a few min before plugging in both ends to the wall. Monday morning get to class and it's cancelled because the network is down. I then understood what I did and unplugged the cable.
Haven't told anyone until today.
