Am I alone in thinking Stranger Things wasn't modeled after Twin Peaks in any way, shape, or form?

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 13 points 4 days ago

Yeah seemed to very obviously be based on Stephen King stories

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 50 points 5 days ago (4 children)

What's up with the random upsurge of Twin Peaks memes? I just started my rewatch 2 months ago and suddenly it's super relevant again? Am I taking crazy pills?

[–] nutbutter@discuss.tchncs.de 42 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I have been posting them a lot. 😂

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 18 points 5 days ago

Twin Peaks is both cemented in a very particular time and also timeless

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

It's a good show, Bront

[–] Hossenfeffer@feddit.uk 1 points 4 days ago

“It’s happening again.”

[–] Wolf314159@startrek.website 26 points 4 days ago

Is the joke that Stranger Things is nothing like Twin Peaks at all?

[–] JakoJakoJako13@piefed.social 33 points 5 days ago (7 children)

I feel like Stranger Things went from must watch tv to not even sure I'll ever watch the finale simply by word of mouth. Is the final season really that bad? I was excited for it at the end of season 4, then it seemed like the season came out and it cratered the show in 2 days.

[–] Schal330@lemmy.world 28 points 5 days ago (4 children)

Honestly I thought the finale was good. Great? No.

Thinking back on the show I remember it positively. I don't think I'll ever be massively eager to rewatch it ever again, but if someone asked me if they should watch it I would say sure give it a go.

It wasn't a catastrophic ending like Game of Thrones was. That is a show I wouldn't even bother to sit down and watch knowing how it ended.

[–] TheEighthDoctor@lemmy.zip 9 points 4 days ago

After seeing so many catastrophic endings over the years: lost, Dexter, how I met your mother, game of thrones...

I'm fine with the ending of Stranger Things

[–] quadrant5835@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago

I sometimes wonder if I made the right decision by only watching GoT through season 7. Then I get reminded to just appreciate what I got 🤣

Is Dunk and Egg good? I saw season 1 on disc at Walmart the other day to learn that it exists.

[–] FLP22012005@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

I completely agree. I struggle to think of similar shows that did end great.

[–] BlueOysterCultist@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 days ago

I think if I were to do it again, I’d call it good after season 1

Same feelings as you on it, but I think season 1 held the magic as far as rewatching needs goes and is pretty self contained

[–] griselbrandalf@reddthat.com 23 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Unpopular take: I actually found it pretty good. All characters got their screen time and the main characters all got a resolution that felt satisfying to me. The action scenes were good. I even liked the revelation of what the upside down really is, though I would've preferred a slightly different version of that explanation.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Different unpopular take: it was the same quality all the way through and that was 5% cool monster ideas, 20% average TV, 75% "shmacting" through long exposition.

[–] chisel@piefed.social 7 points 4 days ago

Maybe true for everything after season one, which was top-tier.

[–] Aqivex@fedinsfw.app 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Is the final season really that bad?

No. It is perfectly fine to great, in parts.

There is some media literacy required to understand a few things that are called plot holes, aren't, is the worst I could say about it.

The hate is about as real as that of the ragebait videogame situations.

[–] Eq0@literature.cafe 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

What have been called a plot hole?

To me, while not great, it felt like a neat clean up of all the threads that had been started.

Mild SpoilerThe only problem is that it solves the question of Vekna by pushing it back in time, so there are still questions there

[–] BlueOysterCultist@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 days ago

Tap for spoilerI thought it was hilarious that the protagonists (L and that other chick) cared about exacting justice against the military, and then nuked a bunch of captive pregnant women in the upside down

Didn’t they say they were going to come back for them?

[–] psycotica0@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This doesn't render as a spoiler for me, BTW

[–] Eq0@literature.cafe 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

Edited, can you let me know? What seems to be the problem? To me it showed correctly

[–] psycotica0@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Okay, in Jerboa it looks like you need the space between ":::" and the "spoiler" and there can't be empty lines, it's got to be the spoiler header, then the line you're marking up, then the closing tag? At least that's how my test looked to me, but maybe my other tests screwed up the parser 😛

[–] Eq0@literature.cafe 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Corrected according too your results. My app shows all of them equally well

[–] psycotica0@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

Looks great thanks!

[–] psycotica0@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Hmm, I'm in Jerboa, but it typically has spoiler tags. Maybe it needs a space between the colons and the word "spoiler"?

It had nothing that made the first season(s) interesting. It's not horrible, just incredibly boring.

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

Yes, it's bad. It's not super bad, or anything (this isn't GoT) but the more you think about it, the less sense it makes. It mostly just rushed, not well thought out conclusions. Some conclusions create glaring plot holes (the upside-down explanation makes it impossible for the Russians to have opened a portal to the upside-down, for instance).

Mostly it commits the most egregious sin of not taking itself seriously. End of S4, shit is completely fucked in Hawkins with the ground being ripped up by the massive portals. Beginning of S5, the portals have been tacked over with sheet metal and never once matter.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 7 points 4 days ago

I was really into the series while it aired. It was so long until the final season came out I no longer cared if I watched or not. I did though. It was okay but nothing spectacular.

[–] LucidNightmare@anarchist.nexus -1 points 4 days ago

From someone who watched it from the beginning, Season 5 was fucking terrible. Full stop.

I’m not even someone who goes into watching something as something to dissect and analyze. The fan theories were much better endings than that garbage of a season.

Watch until Season 4, then pretend Season 5 doesn’t exist. It’s among Game of Thrones now. No one really talks about Stranger Things BECAUSE the last season was that bad.

[–] peteypete420@sh.itjust.works 9 points 4 days ago

Eh outside of being set in the 80s I dont see the resemblance. Also that was a decent ending for a show that was so hyped up and probably shoulda ended a season sooner.

[–] Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 13 points 4 days ago

It was mid, not a cluster fuck like the last season of game of thrones.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I mean, they did originally only intend for it to be 2 seasons but it got super popular so they continued making it even after they clearly ran out of ideas.

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Just stop tho. If you don't have ideas, then don't pretend like you do. For years!

You don't turn 2 seasons into 5 without either making new ideas, or thinking "yeah, I gotta stop. This is nothing." And, if the new ideas are bad, then start thinking, "yeah, I gotta stop. This is nothing."

[–] DrunkenDuckling@lemmus.org 9 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Season 2 of OG Twin Peaks was ass though, only picks up when Lynch rejoins

That was intentional, they forced him to make it into a two season show and he showed them what happens when you try to force David Lynch to do something that compromises his vision.

“So… you want me to completely fuck up my original concept, eh? Yeah, sure, I can do that.”

Is there such thing as a sad ass-fuck? 🤔

[–] zloubida@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 days ago

Ask Polanski.

[–] randoot@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

I didn't like Twin peaks. Slower than molasses. How is stranger things at all similar?
