It was literally the game that saved the franchise. If it didn’t sell well, the franchise was to be shelved.
FE12 did a great job of taking a ton of the best mechanics from previous games, modernizing them, and fitting them into one package.
Traversable overworld map with mobs - FE2 and 8
Skills - FE4/5/9/10, not including 8 since you had one, maybe, and it was tied to that specific class if you had it
Second Generation Characters via Supports - FE4
Flexible Class System - FE2/8
Human-beast hybrids - FE9/10
My Unit - Technically FE7 if you count Mark
Couple all of that with the story being a thousand years after FE1/3, having cameos by old characters, it being the first voice acted game (not including cutscenes from 9/10), and it having a “My Unit” and it’s no surprise that the game absolutely took off. Every modern Fire Emblem fan that hasn’t played it, should. Why? Cause it truly set the groundwork for what the series is today.
