It was my 2nd Fire Emblem game, i really like the pair up system way better than the Adjutant in three houses that i would sometimes forgot to use, i like the story, i already kinda knew bits of it via cultural osmosis but i still like it very much and also the parts i didnt know about like the Ferox Khan surviving and the fake gem.

Child units were pretty fun, they all have good growths so they became really strong units but i didnt got all the kids only, Lucina, Cynthia, Morgan, Nah, Severa and Noire so only half. Severa was my favorite since she was pretty funny

i like reclassing to pick up good skill for my units in the end the units with max skill slots were robin, the kids and tiki, i kinda tried to get the another kid unit but the units i didnt use were pretty weak so it was hard to get them lvl so i just forgot about them

This was the Peoples Liberation Army of Ylisse (plus Sumia), in the final campaign plus my beautiful dragon daughter that can solo maps

i did a bad play in turn 2 and 4 which killed my healer and then the pagasus paladin pair up, but in the end the Manateke squad was able to beat the grimleal and then Morgan got a double Luna proc vs Grima and i got the final hit with Robin to permanently kill Grima since my wife and daughter were dragon and they would have 100% have to deal with him in 1000 years, i like the ending i think it makes more sense than the chrom last hit ending.

10/10 game i really liked it, i will play FE Fates next since it has similar gameplay

It's fun. Hmu when you wanna play the gba and older games, Awakening is the newest one I played and while I did really like it. It wasn't my fire emblem anymore. I like the restrictions, reclasssing, being able to grind outside of chapters and having shops outside of battles etc makes it a different thing to me. Fire emblem 8 was the first to do it and while the Ike games balanced it well, they swung for a direction I'm not that into. I should play the newer ones than Awakening cause I don't mind power fantasy fire emblem but I prefer the older style. If you pick up any older games ill play along on my own file. If you want a bit of a tutorial in how to get into older games/break fe7 to your will, id recommend that next. My last run on standard difficulty was an absolute swath of blood and bones of my enemy cause I totally ignored party balance and only used mounted units. In older gsmes exp is a sorts limited resource and you can't 20/20 everyone, its actually a good idea to promote around level 15 or so instead in the long run and certain units should promote ASAP at level 10 cause the promotion bonuses outweigh their growth rate over so many chapters before they become useless unless promoted, so the early class up breaks even for stats cause you dont need to protect them snd they can gain more enemy phase exp. We're gonns get you through Thracia 776 and onto Tear Ring/Berwick Saga

You could actually grind in Fire Emblem Gaiden believe it or not. Mobs would respawn in caves and dungeons. IIRC, mobs would also spawn on in certain areas on the overworld map, but I could be misremembering. It’s been over twenty years since I played the original NES version so yeah.

It also was the first game to have a very robust class system. There were restrictions of course, but it was way more flexible than any game in the series until Awakening.

When I actually think about it, FE8 is definitely heavily inspired by Gaiden. They share a lot of similarities. Two lords. Two paths. Undead all over the place. Traversable map. Semi-customizable units that could branch on promotion. Grinding against overworld mobs. Dungeons. Similar antagonists. Never actually thought about the stark similarities until now for some reason.

Had to edit this cause editing on the phone sucks and I couldn’t format the spoiler tags properly, so I simply abstracted it.

oh yea, like that post i share that refered to both as monster emblem

Correct. Definitely play that over the original. The original is as clunky as you can imagine a 1992 NES SRPG to be. Also, if the translation patch hasn’t been touched since I played it, it is glitchy and barely coherent.

I left Gaiden out just to keep things more simple. It is the start of that style but its like calling Simon's Quest as the first metroidvania game in the castlevania series. Genealogy is closer to the Gaiden and newer style than most would admit sd well, its just so janky people see it them as one time mechanics and not evolved from Gaiden. The risk free star of match arenas are just a worse versiom of overworld grind. Thracia is my favorite FE btw. Not cause its hard, but because the gameplay and story are so perfectly in sync that I genuinely get emotionally into it where most fe is stats to me now

catgirl-salute im sure i will enjoy the old ones and berwick saga

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 3 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Not enjoying Berwick Saga is perfectly acceptable. That is like...the final boss of tactical jrpg. I should play awakening again, ive got an emulator to do it and I did like it a lot. I kinda forget, how possible is it to only play story chapters and avoid random encounters etc? I may try a classic style run

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 4 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

you can just ignore the encounters, they block the shops but i never had problems with a lack of weapons, i use the azahar emulator btw

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Any suggestions for an challenge run? I forget all the characters except that you can do ideal eugenics with a woman tactician so she can have an OP baby with chrom and the three can solo the entire game. I gotta recheck my 3ds emulator, haven't used it in a bit.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

i think you could totally do a no shop run, specially if you ignore the random encounters, i didnt do it but robin-chrom can make a broken lucina and morgan and you could solo squad all maps

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 2 points 10 hours ago

I can go major character free. They can be undeployed/mobile inventory guy like the old school merchant class. No class change and mounted units only too! Should be doable on normal. The biggest trick to fire emblem is that movement is the most important stat.
