You could actually grind in Fire Emblem Gaiden believe it or not. Mobs would respawn in caves and dungeons. IIRC, mobs would also spawn on in certain areas on the overworld map, but I could be misremembering. It’s been over twenty years since I played the original NES version so yeah.
It also was the first game to have a very robust class system. There were restrictions of course, but it was way more flexible than any game in the series until Awakening.
When I actually think about it, FE8 is definitely heavily inspired by Gaiden. They share a lot of similarities. Two lords. Two paths. Undead all over the place. Traversable map. Semi-customizable units that could branch on promotion. Grinding against overworld mobs. Dungeons. Similar antagonists. Never actually thought about the stark similarities until now for some reason.
Had to edit this cause editing on the phone sucks and I couldn’t format the spoiler tags properly, so I simply abstracted it.
Gaiden is the old game Shadows of Valentia is a remake from right? i will probably play that one after fates
oh yea, like that post i share that refered to both as monster emblem
Correct. Definitely play that over the original. The original is as clunky as you can imagine a 1992 NES SRPG to be. Also, if the translation patch hasn’t been touched since I played it, it is glitchy and barely coherent.
I left Gaiden out just to keep things more simple. It is the start of that style but its like calling Simon's Quest as the first metroidvania game in the castlevania series. Genealogy is closer to the Gaiden and newer style than most would admit sd well, its just so janky people see it them as one time mechanics and not evolved from Gaiden. The risk free star of match arenas are just a worse versiom of overworld grind. Thracia is my favorite FE btw. Not cause its hard, but because the gameplay and story are so perfectly in sync that I genuinely get emotionally into it where most fe is stats to me now
