The problem is that an upvote and a downvote completely lack context.

Racism is bad: true

Physical violence is worse than verbal violence IF all else is equal : true

Therefore....

Physical racism is worse than verbal racism.

But physical violence is not necessarily worse than verbal racism. This is why context matters.

And that's why it's ok to punch Nazis.

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Yes, when I see posts identical to this it's usually in the context of "left wing antifa violence is more common than right wing violence." Which makes me wary enough of this post already.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Reddit votes are about relevance not agreement.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I dunno. I would often downvote things I thought were stupid. They were relevant, but wrong and dumb.

[–] bountygiver@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

That's how it should be used, but not how most people use.

[–] okwhateverdude@lemmy.world 50 points 1 week ago (3 children)

How to spot the racist? They try to draw a distinction here.

[–] running_ragged@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They just want to make the words acceptable today so they can pre-justify the violence tomorrow.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 5 points 1 week ago

But then watch them hurry to say that words aren't acceptable as soon as you mention words like 'Palestine' and 'guillotine'.

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The overlap between edgelords and racists is significant

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 4 points 1 week ago

The edgelord circle is almost entirely inside the racist circle.

There's only a precarious few edgelords out there who aren't racist, but there are lots of racists who aren't edgelords about it.

[–] BurgerBaron@quokk.au 1 points 1 week ago

While deliberately failing to acknowledge racism leads to violence.

[–] yeahiknow3@lemmy.dbzer0.com 39 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

This is like saying “murder is bad.”

  • Murder is usually defined as an illegal killing. However, many legal killings are bad and many illegal killings are good. For example, it was illegal to kill Nazis in Germany circa 1940, but it wasn’t immoral.

Context.

[–] kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 week ago

Oh, how I wish I could argue, that all killings are immoral. But this is a shitty world.

[–] ComradePenguin@lemmy.ml 26 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (5 children)

I am ignorant, please help me understand. Is violence not worse?

Is it a sort of psyhological violence that is worse?

[–] cAUzapNEAGLb@lemmy.world 37 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I think its more that the racist words and racists violence are not two seperate entities that can be tackled independently

And thats what the person is attempting to do, essentially cut one head off the hydra knowing 2 more will emerge

The common link is not just the words, its not just the violence, its that and the infinite spectrum of ramnifications of people thinking there are greater and lesser people than themselves

Yes violent acts are worse than verbal acts Traumas should not be compared, all victems are valid, and words can be used violently.

But racism is bigger than words and violence, and saying "oh the racist violence is worse than the racist words, so we should be focusing in on the violence" is ignorant, and purposefully looks for a tree so as to not see the forest.

Racism is born of generational societal systemic levels of suffering - it requires generational societal systemic levels of healing to reduce its harm.

[–] ComradePenguin@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 week ago

Ah, I see. That makes sense. Thanks!

[–] Idreamofcheesy@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I imagine the poster was arguing against punching Nazis.

Which come on, no people were ever hurt by punching Nazis.

[–] blx@piefed.zip 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's not violence, it's fun for the whole family!

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 10 points 1 week ago

Punching nazis is self defense for society at large

I mean, there's a chance they scraped their knuckles. But I find the scuff worth the punch.

Counterpoint: once my buddy Al broke his fist on somebody's face

[–] felsiq@piefed.zip 11 points 1 week ago

Judging by the response to OOP, I’d guess the original context was somebody punching a racist or something. IE if my guess is right OOP is saying [anti-racist] violence is worse than [racist] words, which explains the negative reaction

If anyone has a source for this to confirm/deny it’d be appreciated tho

[–] boobookittyfrick@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Honestly I wish my parents would have just beat me

[–] dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Racism isn't just verbal. It is violent and deadly. Racist violence is just as deserving of being considered violence. Racism is often violent. It should not be categorized as a thing you can compare to violence because racism is also violent.

[–] QueenHawlSera@piefed.social 23 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Punch Nazis every day. Remember Fascists are not people.

It's kinda like the paradox of tolerance, the moment you're intolerant you lose people being tolerant of you.

The second you start unpersonining people, you become an unperson.

[–] kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 week ago

are not people

I will argue, that they are people, and that is, what makes it even worse. Punch them without hesitation. Just remember, that we are people too, and we could become like them.

[–] Macchi_the_Slime@piefed.blahaj.zone -2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm just waiting for some genius to come and try to "iamverysmart" you and be like "Aren't you being hypocritical by saying the fascists aren't people?" just completely missing the point, LMAO.

[–] zergtoshi@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] Macchi_the_Slime@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh I know, that's the "Completely missing the point" part. I'm saying I can't wait for some member of the brain trust to try to argue hypocrisy when it's not hypocritical at all.

[–] zergtoshi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

My point is: I don't even waste time with asking whether or not fascists are people (dehumanizing people is a different sort of hole you don't want to fall into, lest you turn into what you strive to fight...).
Fascists are a prime example of the Paradox of Tolerance and have to be treated accordingly.
You're right, but I suggest: don't get trapped in side issues ;)

[–] tomi000@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

OP, are you complaining here that Reddit downvoted you for saying someone punching a Nazi is worse than a Nazi?

[–] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's much easier to commit violence against a person you consider to be subhuman the way racists do. Same for 'misogyny is bad but violence worse' like people who consider women property aren't violent against them.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Not all violence is physical

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This gives charlie Kirk vibes

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

I'm sure he said something equivalent while he wasn't dead.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago

This is bullshit, since racism leads to violence.

[–] Sibshops@feddit.cl 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ah the old "Racisism is bad, but it's not that bad so that makes it okay."

"I can excuse the racism but I can not excuse them being late with the fresh made at the table guacamole again"

[–] db2@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

It's reddit. 🤷

[–] MutantTailThing@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes, but what about racist violence?

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Minus and minus is plus, i learned that in maffs

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)
[–] dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

racism is peaceful and nonviolent? What are lynchings? Just racists doing peaceful non violent racism? Why reward thinking lynchings aren't a real racist occurrence that still happens by upvoting that dumb comment?

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Sounds are physical movements that strike your eardrum (unless we're talking bone induction). Loud enough sounds (words) can also be physical violence.

(Seriously, though. Emotional violence is a thing, and it's bad too)

[–] bequirtle@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

no-context screenshot = assume downvotes are justified

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Unless said words are ~~"they are eating the dogs the people that came in there,"~~ "they are eating the dogs, the people that came in there," in which case it incites, somehow succesfully, acts of physical violence against other races.

[–] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

"they are eating the dogs the people that came in there"

I would buy a punctuation, Pat

[–] le_throosh@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

"Actual violence" thats what the downvotes are about.

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

Also im pretty sure the phrase "actual violence" in any context gets you a 3 week ban.

Appeal that ban? Permaban.
