I used to listen to a podcast called The Deprogram as a comfort podcast but as time went on its hosts seemed to run out of things to say on communism so they started to give their limited views on life as episodes without any serious education about Marxism's connection to things like marriage, disability, health, and love. In this their privilege as cis het able bodied men came forward but I kept holding on for nostalgia but I have I finally let go of it.

I had to stop listening to the Deprogram and Chapo for the same reasons. Chapo is especially ableist.

Though I used to use those as 'comfort' podcasts too, if I'm listening to a podcast I usually want to hear some political analysis. So, in that case, as far as politics and theory heavy podcasts go, here is the list of podcasts that my community education group put together for people to check out.

PODCASTS

  • THE ELECTRONIC INTIFADA PODCAST
    • The Electronic Intifada is an independent online news publication and educational resource focusing on Palestine, its people, politics, culture and place in the world.
    • The Electronic Intifada has a highly recommended and informative podcast hosted on YouTube that creates regular videos/podcasts that cover aspects and stories of Palestine and Palestinians from perspectives not covered anywhere else. Topics include art and poetry, international politics, activism, history, weekly battlefield reports with information and footage gained directly from National Liberation Fighters actively resisting against the zionist entity, and more.
  • THE RED NATION PODCAST
    • The Red Nation Podcast features discussions on Indigenous history, politics, and culture from a left perspective. Hosted by Nick Estes and Jen Marley with help from our friend and comrade Sina. The Red Nation Podcast is also the home of Red Power Hour, hosted by Melanie Yazzie and Elena Ortiz.
    • YouTube Source
  • THE BLACK MYTHS PODCAST
    • The Black Myth Podcast is an informative conversational show analyzing popular myths about Black culture of a sociopolitical nature. Translation: We debunk the bs said about Black People. Host - Too Black. Co-hosts - Shelle, Terrell, Kam, and Ryan.
    • YouTube Source
  • BLOWBACK PODCAST
    • Blowback is a podcast about American empire and U.S. interventions hosted by journalist and activist Noah Kulwin and Brendan James.
    • Blowback has 6 seasons that cover US imperialist aggression in: Iraq, Cuba, Korea, Afghanistan, Cambodia, and Angola.
    • Free YouTube Source
  • REV LEFT RADIO
    • An online audio format project/podcast that covers a wide swathe of topics from contemporary news, dialectical philosophy, proletarian history, and revolutionary politics.
    • Rev Left Radio is one of the most principled yet completely down to earth and understandable Marxist-Leninist podcast out there. In addition to covering news, theory, and politics, they also delve into other topics such as Buddhism, spirituality, culture, etc. and their intersection with Marxism. This is also a personal favorite.
    • YouTube Source
  • ADNAN HUSAIN
    • Professor Adnan Husain, historian and scholar of religion, hosts a show spanning history, politics, global affairs, intellectual culture, as well as religion and spirituality. The format ranges from scholarly guest interviews, panel discussions, recorded lectures, and his own readings and commentary.
  • THE MALCOLM EFFECT
    • A show covering the topics of Black Liberation and Anti-Imperialism.
  • PROLES POD
    • Your bi-weekly dose of history, politics, and culture... without the liberalism
    • YouTube Source
  • THE EAST IS A PODCAST
    • A podcast about anti-imperialism through a Marxist lens.

There's also a new podcast called Half the Sky about Marxist feminism. I've only checked out episode 1 so far so let me know if you think it's good

[–] StillNoLeftLeft@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago

RevLeft has consistently been one of my favourites.

Definitely checking out Half the Sky. heart-sickle

[–] ashinadash@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago

Honestly, I tried listening and I never found them particularly insightful. Maybe I've been listening to wrong episodes.

I also had to abandon Chapo for some time (and I'm saying "for some time" because I know I'm coming back to the slop trough). Their current arc is nauseating. There are elections happening in the US and they are doing the same thing they fell for a 100 times before - oh, look at this "progressive" running for the hitler-crats, let's praise them now and learn no lesson from their inevitable failure! Shouldn't you be more cynical by now? Also it's not the same without Matt.

Same. I've grown pretty tired of the "life advice from three dudes" as it tends to be pretty normative and toxic. Hakims body related brainworms especially really rub me the wrong way, but it also feels like they are getting a bit too high on their own awesomeness and it has kind of made it not fun. I also get tired of the drunk uncle rants yogo tends to do, so much yelling.

The latest had a big rant on how electroralism is good actually and I just kind of closed it and went to listen to the soviet history podcast instead.

[–] Letztertod@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago

Truly, 'life advice from dudes' might just be the worst part of any programme.

I never liked the podcast. I pretty much only watch an episode when they interview someone I want to hear from. The entire podcast is just dudes being dudes (derogatory).

[–] Moss@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I listened a long time ago and found it to be another male-dominated "dirtbag left" type podcast. They're all very well read, but they want the podcast to be accessible to people who aren't communists, so there's only so much they can get into.

I was already an ML by the time The Deprogram started so only caught a few episodes. Seemed like a fine introduction for newer leftists, and the cishet male homogeneity was at least partially offset by the international perspectives.

I'm stuck in a similar position as I am with Hasan where I think they're a net positive but since I'm not the target demo it's not worth dozens of hours of my time to really engage with and critique them. But I still feel the urge to critically support and defend people putting in the work to normalize socialism and educate the masses, especially since they're all always under attack from liberal and zionist psyops (one of the boys being dismissive of Israeli atrocity propaganda getting them kicked off Nebula was very revealing, for example)

No investigation no right to speak, though, so I'll just sorta sit back and hope they're a net positive influence lol

[–] imogen_underscore@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

i got really bored of trueanon and just completely stopped listening one day. this was a good year before the Liz hiatus

[–] Letztertod@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago

I agree me too, it was just a bit too much ableism for me at that point.

[–] h0ll0w5p4c3@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago

I couldn't watch/listen to them because it felt more like breadtube+

Also Yogos other podcast "Reaction Cast" was also a dud.

A lot of the podcasts linked by others are much much better.

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This was me with Chapotraphouse shortly after 2020

[–] 30_to_50_Feral_PAWGs@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This was me with Talk Tuah

[–] ICantStopSuckingDick@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I hate that she stopped being relatable and turned on her true fans and shilled crypto

In the immortal words of George Santos, "live by the grift, die by the grift, but above all, get that bag"

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I feel that, I stopped listening to them a long time ago even before I stopped moderating their subreddit lol.

My current favorites are Boonta Vista, Pod Damn America, and Trillbilly Workers Party

[–] Letztertod@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago (5 children)

I left their subreddits a long time ago stuck with the podcast but it just became worst and worst, after a mail bag episode where Hakim justified pimping for revolutionary discipline and recent dating episode where yugopnik made a bad paste joke about being with someone for more than looks I said enough is enough, I gave them some chances but every time it is insensitivity and talk about middle class problems

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Men really need to get their shit together fr

Yes. I was never fully into it, it just wasn't that grabby to me, but it has seemingly gotten worse. JTs videos were my entry point into it, and I also feel my perspective on those/him shifting, especially regarding the types of orgs and activities he suggests to baby leftists. I don't think a youtuber telling people to join frso or psl is really capable of making a dent

[–] Cimbazarov@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Out of curiosity what is wrong with suggesting people join an org? Or is it the type of orgs he recommends? I feel like that is the best advice you can give leftists in America

[–] reader@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah, its the type of orgs. I have some misgivings about them. Its not the worst possible advice, because even in a bad org you might make good connections with local comrades, but you also might get turned off of organizing entirely.

Its hard to give blanket advice and its hard to find comrades to organize with outside of existing national orgs, but those orgs specifically don't have a great reputation, at least in my area, and IMO are not what I would recommend to new comrades

[–] Letztertod@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago (2 children)

For me everything on his channel just seemed to be so focused for the white American now. Here's the vibe I get "the current world, the ideal white man is suffering, he can't get a job, he is screwed over by banks, but if America can be just like China then the white man can get a job, a wife, some kids, and a car" like China is the most successful socialist project but its journey isn't ideal or complete. There are no conversations about the trans rights issues, disability, or anything, China seems to have given the ideal life for a white man so it's model of socialism is championed blindly.

[–] BuhbyeLittleGumshoe@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I mean why do you think white American guys are interested in socialism? I entered the workforce in the post 2008 world. That is to say during the ongoing capitalist crisis of social reproduction. It’s a response to the fact that of the group of global northerners whose job in the world system is to consume, the herd’s getting culled. If your heart was broken by Bernie and before that Obama, you see China’s ability to procure treats and start slobbering. Chinese electric car made by Congolese slaves!!! Chinese burger from pig skyscraper!!! Anyhow it’s a podcast it’s entertainment. I found them saying all instances of commie jargon in the funny voice annoying

[–] Letztertod@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago

Yea I have sadly realised that so many white and even poc in imperial core just care about their treats. They don't love China because it can create good food, third spaces, good infrastructure, but for their treats, EVs, gadgets, fast food, and of course for many freaking chatbots.

[–] reader@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago

Yeah definitely a vibe of appealing to the lowest common denominator of people and ideas in american society, not having the hard conversations on a lot of topics

[–] NotMushroomForDebate@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I've been feeling a similar way about it, but I wasn't sure if it was getting worse or if I had simply outgrown it.

I haven't bothered to listen back to old episodes again to compare.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing though. For me, I would say it served its purpose as a low-barrier entry point for a lot of info early on.

[–] Letztertod@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago

I listened to old episodes a lot back then when I didn't have any other podcasts and I can tell you that the sensitivity was higher, they were more sympathetic to people struggling in life, now it is more and more about their purchases, trips, making jokes at the expense of disabled people, and being slightly misygonistic. Yugo definitely and become more crude and callous after starting full time streaming.

[–] Tabitha@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I kind of meh'd out on the brosocialism a while back

[–] Letztertod@hexbear.net 1 points 2 days ago

Never liked it in the first place

[–] duderium@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I resent that podcast because they never post any episode descriptions and their titles are super vague. Like why should I listen to this?

[–] Tabitha@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

also like an hour long (probably 10 minutes of content)

[–] Sneakytrickyyy@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I've listen to almost every publically available episode of the podcast save for the most recent 6ish ones, I understand the sentiment, I feel like it's in a bit of a decline, maybe it's because all three of the hosts are stretching themselves thin between irl obligations and slopcreating. We've been getting a lot of shorter episodes recently, maybe they're just trying to promote the Patreon more, yapping about communism on YT hardly pays the bills.

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 3 points 3 days ago (3 children)

maybe they're just trying to promote the Patreon more, yapping about communism on YT hardly pays the bills.

That's the thing. If you're just a few people who are the producers and researchers as well as the hosts, overhead for a podcast like this is basically nil.

Even in America, there are places where you can live comfortably without having the income of a celebrity. Southeast Europe and Iraq are even more so. And all of the hosts had moderately successful YT channels and professional careers before starting the podcast together. Their Patreon currently brings in $250k a year.

Whenever I hear influencers say "your donations and subscriptions help us keep going", I always get a wave of doubt. Through thrift and collective living practices and a bit of good planning, I am aiming to retire well before 50, on a low-wage job (never made more than $40k in a year). Any leftist who claims to be an authority on how the economy works should prove it by making its currents work for themself, then extricating themself from the market as much as they can, keeping a standard of living that it's possible for everyone to have, and giving all the rest to radical projects or direct aid. Ultimately, if you're an effective leftist, you give way more to the world than you receive, and if you need to be bringing in money past the point where income stops correlating with better well-being, then you're not all that great of a leftist.

I gotta admit I only ever liked listening to Hakim.

[–] Feed_el_Castro@hexbear.net 3 points 3 days ago

ProlesPod is wonderful, can't recommend it enough.

[–] Renin@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago

There's something relevant, to put it in contrast of a more serious socialist establishment, quoting Xi: "The victory of the Long March teaches us that: with faith in our hearts, we have strength in our steps; without unbreakable ideals and beliefs, and without the strong support of lofty ideals and beliefs, it would be unimaginable to achieve the victory of the Long March."

The Deprograms collective ambition is to be poster boys, for westerners and western influenced audiences. There is basically 0 revolutionary potential in the west. Outside of isolated and largely abandoned inner groups, at least that's what the facts tell me. I suppose I used to be rather naive myself and years ago I would think people would have my back, but in retrospect I was extremely gullible, in truth majority of Westerners don't care about any of us. They largely agree with me and know they can't change it, so there's nothing lofty to grasp upon. I can guarantee you come economic hardship a large part of these people will disappear at best or turn on you at the worst. You can never trust a petite bourgeoisie. Collaborate with them when you can squeeze something out of them, but it's all transactional and reversable.

[–] ClassIsOver@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago (8 children)

Yep, just hit that point with both The Last Podcast on the Left (coverage of the My Lai massacre, general pro-capitalism with no connection to the frequently-mentioned problems it causes without connecting the two) and Behind the Bastards (for neoliberal apologia). I know I'm late to the game. Onwards and upwards.

I remember listening to the crooked media podcast about a second US civil war with the Behind the Bastards guy. Besides having to watch like 4 ads selling me the PMC version of dick pills, it was basically the same our divisions divide us schlock every liberal attempt at that story becomes. Also his conflict journalist osint kind of suspicious background.

The GOAT!! Truly, two books are mandatory for any Marxist worth their salt, at least study them if you are hesitant to read theory yourself in general. Those two books are The Origin of Family, Private Property, and State by Engels and Trans Liberation: Beyond Pink and Blue by Leslie Feinberg
