My partner was in the water yesterday and started spinning around saying "I am kabob". She has apparently not lost this impulse.

[–] Aviandelight@mander.xyz 55 points 1 day ago (4 children)

I don't know about the rest of the boob havers around here but I quit doing cartwheels the first time my tits hit me hard in the chin doing a cartwheel. Safety consciousness takes some of the whimsy out of it.

[–] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 16 hours ago

Lady, you have to calm your tits.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 day ago

My boobs don't do that bc they aren't as big as yours, but with the droopage of my advancing years they might soon. I'm more worried about landing wrong and breaking a hip.

[–] usualsuspect191@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You just gotta cartwheel harder so centrifugal force keeps the ladies in line

Or just spin horizontally for a while?

I do an annual forward and backward summersault just to see if I still can. Backwards is possible, but I’m starting to make creaking sounds

[–] vegafjord@slrpnk.net 2 points 16 hours ago

society IS fucked up

[–] M137@lemmy.today 4 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

This was absolutely not a girls only thing when I grew up. Most kids did it, it was only the few overweight and with bad coordination ones who didn't.

[–] Hoimo@ani.social 4 points 18 hours ago

Ok, no reason to call me out specifically. I tried it, okay!? I landed on my face and broke a tooth. I still have trouble being upside down without thinking about that day.

[–] ragebutt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 1 day ago

I worked with a woman that would do cartwheels sometimes. She was around 30 iirc and mainly did it because people would question her ability to do cartwheels

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I do actually randomly cartwheel, just to make sure I still can. I'm going on 60. Hopefully will be able to cartwheel for a long time more. It's a funny trick when little kids are doing it and I do one with them, too.

[–] Wren@lemmy.today 3 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

You're living the dream for all of us who don't, and giving me hope that there's time to get into cartwheeling again.

[–] curiousaur@reddthat.com 6 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

A lot of this is just growing and aging. Child bodies are great at flipping and spinning. Adult bodies less so. Older adult bodies break in ways that don't quite heal all the way.

[–] Hoimo@ani.social 6 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Not just the flexibility, people underestimate the forces an adult body generates by spinning that mass at those distances. A kid couldn't break his own bones, but I could easily break a kid's bones.

[–] Sidyctism2@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 17 hours ago

No need to brag

[–] fanbois@hexbear.net 2 points 16 hours ago

Most of it is not aging, it's sitting on your ass all day and not using your body. Yeah, it's easier for kids but we simply stop moving our bodies and then we unlearn all those precious abilities.

[–] CaptPretentious@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

When I was little I used to jump off of stairs to just skip a bunch because I could be bothered.

Now if I go down the stairs and I step off the last one a little wrong My whole day is ruined.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

Sometimes I jump a little off the last step and hope I can ruin my day in exciting new ways (strangely and not because of the internet at all, but because of beans lately for the most part)

[–] stopforgettingit@lemmy.world 62 points 1 day ago (4 children)

They do spin, but you have to get her just the right kind of dress that puffs out just right and she'll be spinning in no time. Bonus if the dress also had pockets. She'll smile HUGE, put her hands in the pockets, pull the sides of the skirt out and proudly proclaim it has pockets.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Weighted pockets, for increased angular momentum

[–] Zorcron@lemmy.zip 17 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Finally, I can combine my love of women with my love of beyblades.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

You know there is this semicompetitive fighting dance sport that's all the new hotness

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Seeing the smile from loved ones getting a dress with pockets is a fresh slice of Christmas each time. Pockets are like a gift within a gift.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago

Love a good twirl in a fun dress or skirt!

[–] 13igTyme@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

Can confirm. My wife loves to spin in a fun dress. Bonus if I spin her around like professional dancers would.

[–] Archimedes@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 day ago

I blame government for not providing infrastructure.

[–] eurodyne@piefed.world 37 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This person is correct, and it makes me sad

This world could do with more whimsy

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

We live in concrete cages. My wife drunkenly attempted many cartwheels on our grassy campus grounds in college

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Being a whimsical person is the easiest way to be the change you want to see in the world.

Everyone has access to whimsy, even if you are in prison or being tortured.

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

when i was a little boy

girls did cartwheels.

When i was a little boy, little girls did cartwheels. Now that I'm a man, little girls still do cartwheels. I don't think anything changed.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I simply can't cartwheel anymore in my middle aged body hahaha

[–] ReluctantMuskrat@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I am happy to report as a 50+ dude I still do cartwheels on occasion. I've done a few in the last couple months even. If kids are around we just might get in a cartwheel competition. If I'm walking someplace with a long hallway, a cartwheel calls. They always make people happier at a hospital. Do more cartwheels!

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago

If I'm walking someplace with a long hallway

There's a maintenance tunnel that runs between a couple of buildings where I work, housing a bunch of pipes for the boiler system. It's probably 15ft wide, about 500ft of smooth concrete, with the two ends angled down towards a drain in the middle.

Every single time I'm in that tunnel, I wish I had a skateboard... I haven't been on a skateboard in 30 years... One day I'm going to break a hip in that tunnel, get fired, and lose my health insurance but it will be awesome, and I'll have the biggest smile on my face the whole time!

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Haha this made me smile!

I’ll be real honest here….I don’t think I ever cartwheeled as a child either

But I’ll get a few more whimsical twirls in when I wear dresses now! Thanks for the inspiration!

[–] ReluctantMuskrat@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Twirls with dresses are full of whimsy and beautiful... please keep it up! It always makes people smile!

I wish I could spin until I was dizzy with kids too, but alas that's been a sure way to get myself sick all my adult years.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

As a guy who weighs way to much these days, I for some reason am foolish enough to think my arms will be fine but I'd still somehow break my hip.

In reality I'd probably just faceplant or break my neck lol.

How'd he go out? That fucker tried whimsy at 36

Honestly this. I will hurt myself sleeping with my head tilted 5 degrees the wrong direction. I will 100% hurt myself if my head is near the ground and my legs are in the air.

[–] pixxelkick@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

The real reason though is simple:

When you are younger, your center of balance is way more core and your arms/legs weigh a lot less.

As you grow your limbs become way heavier.

Think about how easy it is to pick up a 7 year old vs a 30 year old.

Well, when you do a cartwheel, you are also having to move the body of a grown adult, your own body that is.

So its possible if you are very fit, of course.

But for an average person, good luck haha.

General rule of thumb is that a cartwheel is similiar to a pull up.

Remember how easy pull-ups were when you were a kid? Same principle.

[–] procrastitron@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (4 children)

I don’t think this is correct.

I’m a middle aged man in poor overall shape but I can still do cartwheels.

I’ve never been able to do a pull up.

Cartwheels don’t require much strength. You aren’t on your arms for very long and don’t actually further extend your arms during the period when they’re touching the ground.

What cartwheels do require is coordination, flexibility, and balance.

… and practice. Lots of practice.

If I had to guess for most people the limiting factor as you age would probably be flexibility.

That’s assuming you knew how to do them when you were young. I learned it in my mid twenties, but would not envy someone trying to learn it in their mid forties or later.

[–] Yeller_king@reddthat.com 4 points 1 day ago

And in my case, I can easily do a pull-up but couldn't do a cartwheel to save my life.

Hand, hand, foot, foot. I still can & I'm barely even middle aged anymore. It's mostly momentum.

[–] shweddy@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (3 children)

The patriarchy is allergic to whimsy

[–] whimsy@lemmy.zip 1 points 17 hours ago

I'm also allergic to patriarchy

Boys still play swords with sticks, that never ends.

Women should randomly knock out a couple of cartwheels during the day.
