news
Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
Any violence against the police is justified self defense.

It's going to be an absolute miracle if anyone talks about this for more than 2 days
It will be talked about for more than two days in Madison. Outside of Madison, you're probably correct.
video is staying power. kinda depends how long before ice kills somebody else on camera.
Idk, the cops murdered white guy Daniel Shaver on camera with the world's flimsiest excuse after a prolonged absurd game of Simon says, and we're like the only ones who remember it
I don't think video of crimes has that much staying power these days, at least not consistently.
i also hear about Shaver from time to time from the handful of right-libertarians who are still anti-cop. usually because they're being racist 🙁
99% chance this is successfully swept under the rug, 1% chance of
and then somehow still nothing changes
If cops will just execute you on the ground then running seems like the only sensible option.
I think you mean [removed for fed posting] is the only sensible option
Yeah at some point they're gonna start reaping what they've sown. If you make it so that running and surrendering aren't valid options, sooner or later people are going to start picking... the other option.
Everyone's first instinct seeing something politically sensitive on corpo social media should be to mirror it asap.
Holy shit, they tackle him off his bike at speed, then he's already got 3 pigs on top of him restraining him, before another cop-car pulls up a pig exits, he tased then shot like 2/3 seconds later
They're probably going to go all in on the 'he was armed and about to shoot we feared for out lives' even though his hands/arms are clearly restrained. Or they'll barely bother with a cover up an no justice will be served to the pigs just like Tamir Rice, Philando Castile, Alec Pretti and so many more
This is an isolated incident and the US is not an authoritrian police state btw
Trying to work out if this is another angle https://www.channel3000.com/news/full-video-police-involved-fatal-shooting-in-madison/article_2b47a3cd-49dc-46b5-bb20-8448f784378f.html but it's geolocked and https://archive.is/Rm2cJ doesn't copy the video it seems
This is another angle. The guy has a knife, but that wouldn't matter if the cops hadn't tackled him off his bike. And he is fully restrained before they shoot him right in the face. Once he is dead, they start kneeling on him and cuffing his corpse.
For context, this man was executed in broad daylight for "checking vehicles."
They claim two officers were "injured" but the entire interaction seems to be: cops were called cause a guy was looking at cars. They show up, he takes off. They knock him off his bike, grab him, pin him, and shoot him. He does not threaten them. He does not stab them or hit them. They're absolutely lying about injuries.
Honestly I can't even see the knife in his hand in the video. They just yell he has a knife, but his arms are being held and his hands look empty. They seem to pull the knife off him and toss it aside after they kill him. So if it was even his knife (which, let's be real, cops plant weapons all the time), he wasn't using it. Looks like it was in a pocket or waistband or on his belt or something from the angle they pull it off him
The only injury they possibly suffered is the blow from taking the bike at that speed, which was not the riders fault, although I'm surprised there wasn't friendly fire with how close and sloppy the shooting seemed
Looks like one of the cops shot the other cop to me. He has his hand behind the victim's head at the time he gets shot in the face and he flinches his hand away very sharply, even shakes his hand in pain afterwards. Bullet probably went all the way through and he took some shrapnel either from the bullet or bones.

CW Closer graphic video
Someone should be able to download the video and mirror it.
They say “He’s got a gun!” Yet didn’t plant a gun. So much for sticking to your story.
Yeah, a good habit here for people is to save stuff you think is important. Includes anything, but especially stuff like this.
Update: cops have cleared out. Protests continue. Report came in that the cops picked up a knife from the local library's lost and found.
Sounds plausible, but is there a source on that report?
Its rumor from a signal chat. Another video came out showing a knife during the incident. It also clearly shows him getting tazed by one cop and then the cop that was wrestling with the knife takes that as an opportunity to execute him.
reminds me of Sammy Yatim, murdered in 2013 at age 18 by piggy James Forcillo, because he had a small knife. Yatim was alone in one of the old Toronto streetcars, which were built like tanks, with nobody else at all around the vehicle. He could not have run anywhere, and there was nobody to hurt. They tasered him after fatally shooting him 8 times.

I'm so tired. I'm so, so tired. When does it stop. How does it stop. How many more will be murdered in cold blood before we as a society decide it has to stop, at any and all costs.
I'm so tired
Same
These are the times where it's just
What's the context of this in the plot I've been considering reading punisher
It's from the Punisher MAX story, "Up is Down, Black is White"
So a mobster decided (with help from a CIA goon btw) to draw the Punisher into an ambush by getting him so angry he doesn't do the usual Frank thing of playing it smart
Mobster knows one thing about the Punisher, so he goes to the cemetery, digs up his dead family and pisses on the remains
He of course records this and sends it to every newspaper, tv station and gossip rag he can
Frank starts going apoplectic, starts killing goons every single night, leaving one alive every time so they can relay his single demand
Bury his family again or he will never, ever stop
This image is from a dream he has (keep in mind, he's stopped sleeping) where he kills every single person in New York City

It's heavy stuff
If you want some suggestions, I say start with the Garth Ennis runs of Punisher MAX
They're self-contained, so they don't require going through dozens of other stories to understand
Most of the collections online include Punisher: Born, Punisher: Tyger, Tyger and Punisher: The End, which all really help to flesh out Ennis' personal vision of the character
Cops shouldn't be allowed to carry guns. The UK is a hell somehow worse than the U.S. in many ways but the one thing they did right was having a separate squad of gun cops unless they're no longer doing that idk i don't keep up with the uk
Cops shouldn't be allowed ~~to carry guns.~~
I knew someone was gonna do that as soon as i posted but you know what i'll allow it
It's also most South-East Asian countries, where normal police do not have guns, then there's military police with guns. There's heaps of footage of police from China, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia etc using nets and trident like catching poles to disarm people with knives instead of just shooting them.
I also liked how rural police in New Zealand were a while back (I don't know if it's changed). They had no handguns, but a semi-automatic rifle locked in the boot of their car. So if they needed a gun for an emergency they had one. But it wasn't something they could pull out on a whim.
you couldn't give cops here man-catchers they'd stab people in the throat.
unless they're no longer doing that idk i don't keep up with the uk
That's how it is everywhere except transit hubs (major train stations or airports) yeah. Those cops have g36 or mp5 now.
In case anyone is curious, in the period of April 2025 to March 2026 there were 9 incidents where a cop fired a weapon in the 16030 different armed operations carried out by police: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/police-use-of-firearms-statistics-april-2025-to-march-2026/police-use-of-firearms-statistics-april-2025-to-march-2026
I think having separate armed police puts a gravity on them that massively reduces the number of times they actually use the weapons compared to the total normalisation of gun use the america cops have. Additionally because they're "special" they probably take a greater pride in being professional about it.
in ireland only a tiny portion of the cops have guns and a beat cop will never have one. it's kind of absurdly funny when your capitalist state is upheld by guys with literal sticks
And as always liberals will look like I have two heads when I say "fuck all cops. Get them out of here"
Greatest country in the world btw
Death death to AmeriKKKa
The video is bad.
short description of how the kkkops murdered this poor man
They straight up tazed him, stomped on him, had him down and restrained, and then shot him.
I hope I'm the first one to make this joke in this thread.
The dems have a plan. What the police need is more funding and more training...
eagerly awaiting your joke comrade
i was in fear for my life
Cops weren't wearing bodycams because its not mandatory.
Bodycams change very little beside offering an up close view of the inhumane cruelty police dispatch against citizens. Bodycams were never a solution. Vanishingly few instances of police being punished for their behavior while wearing a bodycam.
This is also dead center of most hippy/progressive neighborhood in Madison.
From https://www.wpr.org/news/shooting-police-madison-east-side-protest-concerts-on-the-square
Wednesday’s shooting took place in the same neighborhood where a Madison police officer fatally shot Tony Robinson, a 19-year-old Black man, inside an apartment building in 2015.
Robinson was unarmed. The Dane County District Attorney did not issue charges against that police officer, after determining the officer had reason to fear for his life after concluding that Robinson had physically assaulted the officer at the top of the stairs within the building.
The story on that one is he was having an acid trip safely in his home when the police interrupted him and shot up the stairs at him.
There's a mural on of Tony Robinson just over a block away.
