Uchiyama Gudō and the Kōtoku Incident - Novo General Megathread for the 17th-23th of May 2026

'Taigyaku Jiken', a 1989 piece by Iri and Toshi Maruki, was inspired by the High Treason Incident of 1910
Kōtoku Incident (幸徳事件, Kōtoku Jiken), was a socialist-anarchist plot to assassinate the Japanese Emperor Meiji in 1910, leading to a mass arrest of leftists, as well as the execution of 12 alleged conspirators in 1911.
Uchiyama Gudō, born on this day in 1874, was a socialist Buddhist priest who opposed Japanese imperialism, oligarchic land ownership, and the rule of the Emperor. He was executed by the state in 1911 during the "High Treason Incident".
Gudō was ordained as a Soto Zen priest in 1897. In 1904, he became the abbot of Rinsenji temple in a poor area of a rural region of the Hakone Mountains. Village tradition states that every autumn Gudō would invite poor villagers to divide the harvest from the temple's only two trees equally among themselves.
Gudō was a self-identified socialist and outspoken advocate for redistributive land reform, overturning the Meiji emperor system, encouraging conscripts to desert en masse, and advancing democratic rights for all. He also criticized Zen leaders who claimed that low social position was justified by karma.
One of Gudō's most widely read and circulated works was a scathing denunciation of the Imperial Japanese government. Contradicting official state doctrine, he argued that the Emperors of the Imperial family were neither divine nor the destined rulers of Japan, and that their ancestors "came forth from a corner of Kyushu, killing and robbing people as they did. They then destroyed their fellow thieves."
Due to the popularity of Gudō's subversive publications, he was arrested in May 1909 and charged with violating press and publication laws. When police uncovered an alleged socialist plot to assassinate the Emperor (known as the "High Treason Incident"), Gudō was accused of being a co-conspirator.
In 1911, he, along with eleven other socialists, were convicted and executed. In July 1909, before Gudō's conviction, officials of the Sōtō Zen sect revoked Gudō'sabbotship.

Anyone got an opinion on Psychopass? So far I'm feeling quite good about it, especially season 1. The pre-crime thing is well trodden territory but it strikes me as a pretty unique take on the concept.l and kinda prescient actually for being mid 2010s. Yea I can feel that sometimes! I think I just feel ground up lately, like those big grinder disks with the handles on the sides just crushing me slowly. Not excruciating or anything, just stretched too thin.
Ive just had to work with the chef at my work for too many days in a row. Hes not a hardass, I sometimes wish he was more Gordon ramsay, instead he is deeply neurotic and is incapable of dirext communication and he therefore decides whenever hes feeling himself to just stand there bwing almost 7 feet tall taking up space and criticizing people after 6 mo ths of not establishing any standards. He acts super sunshiney and never shuts the fuck up the entire time he is being like this,but will occasionally say out loud to himself that he is making everyone uncomfortable but doesnt stop doing it. Fuck that guy. Hes almost 50 and is in charge of people's livelihood. He needs sedatives and to stop treating people like his child. Someone referred tly walked out after working there for 3 years im pushing 5 and his bullshit is wearing me down as well. Id rather be yelled at at sworn at than have a dude who is clesrly uncomfortable in his own skin make the worst decisions ever and have to walk on eggshells to respond cause he does all the social things tjat are co sidereal nice bit are in the end shit. You scratch his back and he'll stab yourself while smiling. He doesnt get that the rest of us dont like when it gets busy and he gets all stoked when we are being crushed. I think he thinks hes lifting spirits but its just blowing sunshine up my ass and I despise that more than an openly toxic environment cause at least then I can respond in kind.

well despite it all i've finished organizing (almost) all my embroidery floss.
it took me three days but it will be so worth the effort. i discovered the method here and knew it would be perfect for me. my stash was honestly a mess and i really hated winding floss bobbins.
this way, all the threads are cut to size so when i need a specific color all i have to do is hook a single thread and yoink it out the top of the pack! gonna make things so much easier when i start my project.
