Do people in Japan seriously like this giddy dipshit? Every time I see her I think of a Cheshire cat that just suffered a serious head injury

It's girlboss feminism in an inherently misogynistic country. Like Thatcher in England, a woman can only rise if she expresses their deepest darkest desires for them.

The men get feminine permission for their sadism, the women get the catharsis of finally seeing a woman in power in their ruthlessly misogynistic society. The ones most screwed are everyone who doesn't conform to their society's chosen values.

Solid analysis. Japan is almost a more cursed place than America.

i do think it's more graceful in its economic stuff, they stagnate, but instead of panicking around for $growth they just do silly tech stuff, kinda degrowth posterboy. if only they weren't becoming more militaristic or their work ethics.

In some ways, and less cursed in others. It's more sexist and predatory of women (and children), but ironically less imperialistic, though not by choice I'd argue. Better healthcare, education, infrastructure, and social safety net, but higher pressure in the workplace and to culturally conform, and more racist/xenophobic in addition to its mentioned sexism.

It also produces more Kiyoshi Kurosawa movies than America, which is a plus

Maybe more cursed but there’s trains… and they run on time?

People in Japan have been so clocked out of politics for the past 50 years that they look at Takaichi and only think "oh she's a woman and she likes Japan in like an aggressive military sort of way, that's cool and new." Because that's enough of a difference for average Japanese people to actually care.

Also Japan is undergoing a kind of parallel to 2016 where alienated young people are becoming reactionaries because there's simply no organized alternative, because politics in Japan are the avenue of the elderly and crackpots.

'I want something new in politics so I'll vote for a candidate from the LDP, the party that's been in power for over 94% of our modern state's existence'

Yeah but it's a really weird and openly racist woman this time instead of a boring old man.

Japan is the Israel of Asia

[–] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

More like the Britain of Asia.

I've felt this parallel many times, especially with its divided neighbor Korea (Ireland). The EU and China could also be seen now as the bigger and better neighbor next door.

Keats was once presented with an Irish terrier, which he humorously named Byrne. One day the beast strayed from the house and failed to return at night. Everybody was distressed, save Keats himself. He reached reflectively for his violin, a fairly passable timber of the Stradivarius feciture, and was soon at work with chin and jaw.

Chapman, looking in for an after-supper pipe, was astonished at the poet’s composure, and did not hesitate to say so. Keats smiled (in a way that was rather lovely).

"And why should I not fiddle," he asked, "while Byrne roams.”

spoiler

From The Best of Myles, by Flann O'Brien. Most of the search results for "feciture" lead to this joke, so I guess it never caught on.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

Guarantee he thought of this pun and waited for YEARS to make that joke.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

is this a good time to mention that while Japan does have around eight months of crude oil reserves, it only has enough LNG stored to last about three weeks?

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago

And it gets real cold there.
