In some ways, and less cursed in others. It's more sexist and predatory of women (and children), but ironically less imperialistic, though not by choice I'd argue. Better healthcare, education, infrastructure, and social safety net, but higher pressure in the workplace and to culturally conform, and more racist/xenophobic in addition to its mentioned sexism.

I don't know if I'd say Japan is less imperialistic by choice. The post-WW2 division of countries meant that Japan would be an anti-communist base of power in the east, with a high standard of living and consumer industries to encourage other countries to follow the capitalist road, while letting the US handle all military matters.
