Who buys an umbrella? They give them out for free in those cans by the doors at cafes and whatnots?

No, but I do it because I find it fun. I enjoy the sound it makes.
what umbrella
Man I wish there was a comm for this meme or for these sorts of "what the fuck" questions that aren't;'t white ShowerThoughts material.
be the change you wish to see in the fediverse
Ordinarily i'd agree with you but I've neither the gift of the gab, nor the charisma for it to draw any attention!
It'll naturally find a home soon though 😊
I'll do it. I already mod a handful of comms, one more won't kill me.
What should we call it tho?

I don't get umbrellas; Whenever it's raining enough to need one, it's too windy to use one.
That's not my experience in my local areas. I guess we just don't tend to have strong winds, and you do see a ton of people with umbrellas doing just fine
The primary function of most umbrellas is marketing.
If you want an umbrella that works better on (slightly) windy days you're going to want one with a dome that covers further down over your head and is transparent, so you can see through it. These don't break as easily in the wind, but of course any umbrella works like a sail.
Umbrellas make more sense in places that expect rain most days.
I feel like in those places a good raincoat actually makes more sense than an umbrella.
Umbrellas are for people who don't wear jackets with hoods. Also jackets with hoods are fire people who don't use umbrellas. It's a circular economy, really.
Walk under a spot where it's raining harder? What does that mean? It's raining but there are spots of unmoving harder rain that you can walk under? What?
Walk under the edge of an awning or roof, where the runoff is coming down.
Touche. That's a good point.
The other side of me says I would have phrased it differently as that is not raining harder.
When I use matches I let them burn all the way through
(Yes, there is a technique to it and years of experience and burns)
The trick, dear Kazu, is not minding that it hurts.
Here in the Pacific Northwest we don't use umbrellas. We are practically amphibious.
No, and keep your eyes on the road!
While it's neat to feel the rain bounce off your umbrella, it also means your umbrella wears off faster.
And in this economy...
excuse me...it "wears off".
what are you talking about??
I meant to say wears down.
but what wears down?
I ask because I have an umbrella that still works that was bought in 1983, and it still functions.
