it's depressing how ingrained it is; i've never seen my father so angry when i showed him his dna results that said he was over 80% native american and i never want to see it again.
i also wish i understood why native american tribes in the united states & canada don't consider you to be one of them even if you're 2/3rds native by dna; but the ones in mexico and most of latin america do even though it's the same f*cking tribe that was artificially split by the border.

Yes. The thing is, most reactionary Latinos still have that colonial mentality, so in their minds: Spanish/Portuguese/Dutch/French = white person = top of colonial society. This also includes Italians and Germans (Italians and other Europeans, Chinese, and Japanese immigrated to South America and were used as cheap labor to replace Black and Native American workers or slaves. To a certain extent, this backfired, as it led to a rise in anarchist and communist ideology, since most immigrants didn't give a damn about hating Black people or Native Americans and just wanted to get paid).

Not long ago in Mexico there was only "canal 2) where mostly white people actors became famous and did their thing. But then "once" showed up and it became "TV Azteca" and since then there is more brown people on TV. Nobody noticed because color TV's only stated appearing in the 90's.
Most of the bigger telenovelas that play on Telemundo or Univision still have predominantly white casts or have central characters that are white, while darker-skinned people get pushed to secondary or side characters.
One of the telenovelas airing right now has famous actress Angelique Boyer (best known for Rebelde and Teresa) as the main character, and she's a French-Mexican women.
It sucks too because there is a lot of reactionary assimilationism in people claiming azteca identity too.
