The Latinos that are like "I'm white actually, I'm predominantly Spanish" are so funny to me. Brother the Spanish are not white. You are not going to be let into the white people society. It got expanded for a couple of decades for some reason, but it's getting redacted again. You're like the polish or bosnians.
Whiteness is a construct, a method of social control, and therefore it varies from region to region. We all understand this. It's just funny to me that in America it seems like there's a large group of people that argue "I am from Europe and therefore white."
If you're gonna base your whiteness on Europe, then you gotta up your phrenology game.
Yes. The thing is, most reactionary Latinos still have that colonial mentality, so in their minds: Spanish/Portuguese/Dutch/French = white person = top of colonial society. This also includes Italians and Germans (Italians and other Europeans, Chinese, and Japanese immigrated to South America and were used as cheap labor to replace Black and Native American workers or slaves. To a certain extent, this backfired, as it led to a rise in anarchist and communist ideology, since most immigrants didn't give a damn about hating Black people or Native Americans and just wanted to get paid).
Yeah I get that, it's just funny because that same colonial mentality is what means spanish/portuguese/dutch/french is an impossible thing to say. Spanish and portuguese similar to the dutch?? ALL THE FRENCH? EVEN THE SOUTHERN ONES???
I lived abroad for a while and I still remember some latinos that were weird about race and big into whiteness and it was always just so funny to me when they were talking to me like "us white people" because back home people would assume they were from the middle east or something. The idea of building your understanding of social relations on some sort of ideal of Europe while the very same europeans would not include you in the club you're busy maintaining is just darkly comedic.
Let me gesture broadly to the many many Latinos that are not white passing even in their loose definition, in the US that voted for Trump. Central and South American machismo is so wild to me. I actually ran into a dude at a bar in Honduras once who bragged about raping a gay guy, like very very loudly. All while claiming to be straight. That shit was wild.
Theres a term for that kind of people in LatAm, the so-called Morenazis/Nazipardos. (Morenazi (portmanteau from Spanish moreno—meaning "having tanned or dark skin"—and Nazi) or morenario are derogatory terms to describe non-white people, or more directly mixed race, black, or even Europeans who are not considered fully white by WASP culture or neo-Nazis, who show support or sympathy for Nazism, Nazi Germany, the personality cult of Adolf Hitler and more directly white supremacism).
I mean a Portuguese person born in Madeira is not at all like a Portuguese person born in Lisbon, or a Spanish born in Madrid and one born in Southern Spain. As for the Spanish and Portuguese being like the Dutch, is more or less that most people sees them as European, and they think all Europeans, except for the Turks, are White (in LatAm, for some decades most Syrians, Lebanese, Palestianians, Turks, Kurds and even some Egyptians were consider White as long as they were Christian and were willing to integrate with Latin American Society, though some Muslims and Jews were also accepted because they were seen as "conservative").
It is a bit funny, they want to be part of the "West" but they will never be accepted. Some of them say they wish they were a colony of the US, and that they think if they hate their fellow latinos, that might get them respect with the Americans or Europeans.
The only definitionally white people are Anglos owning in large part to the center of capital being situated entirely within the Anglosphere for centuries. Every other European ethnicity can have their white card taken away from them at any time by some gannon. That's what happened during WWI. Germans got demoted to slanty-eyed dog-eating Asiatics who fantasize about r-wording danty white maidens like every other POC because the UK was at war with Germany and as the only definitionally white people, Anglos ripped up the white card of Germans. How white someone is boils down to how well they can pass as an Anglo.
Too bad for these self-loathing Latines, Anglos think blanqueamiento is a made-up word. They do however subscribe to the one-drop rule, and good luck trying to explain how your one (1) Indigenous or one (1) African ancestor doesn't count to a red-faced gannon.
Forever a fan of Benjamin Franklin describing the swedish as "swarthy" and not considering them white.
The dastardly hun and all that. The germans likewise had a concept of whiteness in WWII where Britain (or the US, I'm not up to date on my Hitlerism) was seen as too corrupted by non-aryan blood or whatever it was.
To the anglos, yes. But, as I said, it's a social construct that varies region by region. In the US you see plenty of people that identify as white that definitely would not pass as white in Britain or the rest of northern Europe.
